हैमपक्षिगणैर्जुष्टां सौवर्णजलजाकुलाम्। हैमपङ्कां हैमजलां सौवर्णोज्ज्वलवालुकाम्
It was filled with flocks of golden birds, crowded with golden lotuses, with golden mud, golden waters, and shining golden sands.
क्वचित्मुपिष्पितैः पूर्णां सौवर्णकुसुमोत्पलैः। क्वचित्तीररुहैः कीर्णां हैमपुष्पैः सुपुष्पितैः
In some places it was filled with blooming golden lotuses and water-lilies; in other places, its banks were scattered with splendid golden flowers from blossoming trees.
तीर्थैश्च रुक्मसोपानैः सर्वतः समलङ्कुताम्। विमलैर्मणिजालैश्च नृत्तगीतरवैर्युताम्
Its banks were adorned everywhere with sacred bathing places and golden steps, with pure networks of jewels, and resounded with the sounds of dance and song.
दीप्तैर्हेमवितानैश्च समन्ताच्छोभितां शुभाम्। तथाविधां नदीं दृष्ट्वा पार्थस्तां प्रशशंस ह
It was splendid all around with shining golden canopies; seeing such a river, Partha praised it.
दृष्टपूर्वां राजेन्द्र दृष्ट्वा हर्षमवाप च। दर्शनीयां नदीतीरे पुरुषान्सुमनोहरान्
Having seen that river, which he had never seen before, O king, he felt joy, and on its banks he beheld men of wondrous beauty.
तान्नदीसलिलाहारान्सदारानमरोपमान्। नित्यं सुखमुदा युक्तान्सर्वालङ्कारशोभितान्
He saw them, who lived on the river's waters, with their wives, resembling immortals, always endowed with happiness and joy, adorned with every ornament.
तेभ्यो बहूनि रत्नानि तदा लेभे धनञ्जयः। दिव्यजम्बूफलं हैमं भूषणानि च पेशलम्
From them, Dhananjaya then received many gems, divine golden jambu fruits, and exquisite ornaments.
लब्ध्वा तान्दुर्लभान्पार्थः प्रतीचीं प्रययौ दिशम्। नागानां रक्षितं देशमजयश्च पुनस्ततः
Having obtained those rare treasures, Partha went westward, and again conquered the land guarded by the Nagas.
ततो गन्वा महाराज वारुणीं पाकशासनिः। गन्धमादनमासाद्य ततस्तानजयत्प्रभुः
Then, O king, the wielder of the thunderbolt, having gone to Varuni, reached Gandhamadana and there conquered those regions.
तं गन्धमादनं राजन्नतिक्रम्य ततोऽर्जुनः। केतुमालं ददर्शाथ वर्षं रत्नसमन्वितम्
Having passed beyond Gandhamadana, Arjuna then saw Ketumala, a land filled with gems.
सेवितं देवकल्पैश्च नारीभिः प्रियदर्शनैः। तं जित्वा चार्जुनो राजन्करे च विनिवेश्य च
It was inhabited by women of divine beauty, resembling goddesses; having conquered it, Arjuna established his authority there.
आहृत्य तत्र रत्नानि दुर्लभानि तथार्जुनः। पुनश्च परिवृत्याथ माध्यं देशमिलावृतम्
There, Arjuna gathered rare gems, and then, turning back, he reached the central region covered with settlements.
गत्वा प्राचीं दिशं राजन्सव्यसाची धनञ्जयः। मेरुमन्दरयोर्मध्ये शैलोदामभितो नदीम्
Going eastward, O king, Savyasachi Dhananjaya came to a river flowing between Meru and Mandara mountains.
ये ते कीचकवेणूनां छायां रम्यामुपासते। कषान्झषांश्च नद्यौ तान्प्रघसान्दीप्तवेणिपान्
There, those who dwell in the pleasant shade of the Kichaka bamboos, and the fish and tortoises of the river, feed on the shining bamboo shoots.
पशुपांश्च कुलिन्दांश्च तङ्कणान्परतङ्कणान्। एतान्समस्ताञ्जित्वा च करे च विनिवेश्य च
And having conquered the Paśupas, the Kulindas, the Taṅkaṇas, and the Parataṅkaṇas, he brought them all under tribute.
रत्नान्यादाय सर्वेभ्यो माल्यवन्तं ततो ययौ। तं माल्यवन्तं शैलेन्द्रं समतिक्रम्य पाण्डवः
Taking precious gems from all of them, he then proceeded to Mālyavanta; and after crossing that lordly mountain, the Pāṇḍava continued onward.
भद्राश्वं प्रविवेशाथ वर्षं स्वर्गोपमं शुचिम्। तत्र देवोपमान्दिव्यान्पुरुषाञ्शुभसंयुतान्
He entered Bhadrāśva, a land pure and heavenly in appearance; there he saw divine men, radiant and splendid like the gods.
जित्वा तान्स्ववशे कृत्वा करे च विनिवेश्य च। आहृत्य सर्वतो रत्नान्यसङ्ख्यानि ततस्ततः
Having conquered them, brought them under his control, and imposed tribute, he gathered countless gems from all directions.
नीलं नाम गिरिं गत्वा तत्रस्थानजयत्प्रभुः। ततो जिष्णुरतिक्रम्य पर्वतं नीलमायतम्
He went to the mountain called Nīla and there the lord conquered its inhabitants; then Jiṣṇu crossed the vast Nīla mountain.
विवेश रम्यकं वर्षं सङ्कीर्णं मिथुनैः शुभैः। तं देशमथ जित्वा स करे च विनिवेश्य च
He entered the land of Ramyaka, filled with beautiful pairs of creatures; after conquering that region, he brought it under tribute.
अजयच्चापि बीभत्सुर्देशं गुह्यकरक्षितम्। तत्र लेभे च राजेन्द्र सौवर्णान्मृगपक्षिणः
Bībhatsu also conquered the land guarded by the Guhyakas; there, O king, he obtained golden animals and birds.
अगृह्णाद्यज्ञभूत्यर्थं रमणीयान्मनोहरान्। अन्यांश्च लब्ध्वा रत्नानि पाण्डवोऽथ महाबलः
He took charming and delightful treasures for the purpose of sacrifice; and having acquired other gems, the mighty Pāṇḍava continued.
गन्धर्वरक्षितं देशमजयत्सगणं तदा। तत्र रत्नानि दिव्यानि लब्ध्वा राजन्नथार्जुनः
He conquered the land protected by Gandharvas and their hosts; there, O king, Arjuna obtained divine gems.
वर्षं हिरण्वतं नाम विवेशाथ महीपते। स तु देशेषु रम्येषु गन्तुं तत्रोपचक्रमे
He entered the land called Hiraṇvata, O ruler of the earth; and in those beautiful regions, he began to journey further.
मध्ये प्रासादवृन्देषु नक्षत्राणां शशी यथा। महापथेषु राजैन्द्र सर्वतो यान्तमर्जुनम्
In the midst of clusters of palaces, like the moon among stars, Arjuna was seen traveling everywhere along the great highways, O king of kings.
प्रासादवरशृङ्गस्थाः परया वीर्यशोभया। ददृशुस्तं स्रियः सर्वाः पार्थमात्मयशस्करम्
From the lofty peaks of splendid palaces, all the ladies, radiant in strength and glory, beheld Pārtha, the bringer of his own fame.
तं कलापधरं शूरं सरथं सधनुः करम्। सवर्मं सकिरीटं वै संनद्धं सपरिच्छदम्
They saw him, the heroic bearer of the bow, with his chariot, armor, crown, and attendants, fully equipped and adorned.
सुकुमारं महासत्वं तेजोराशिमनुत्तमम्। शक्रोपमममित्रघ्नं परवारणवारणम्
Delicate yet of great spirit, a peerless radiance, destroyer of foes, like Indra, the subduer of hostile elephants.
पश्यन्तः स्त्रीगणास्तत्र शक्तिपाणिं स्म मेनिरे। अयं स पुरुषव्याघ्रो रणेऽद्भुतपराक्रमः
The groups of women there, seeing him with his weapon in hand, thought: 'This is the tiger among men, wondrously valiant in battle.'
अस्य बाहुबलं प्राप्य न भवन्त्यसुहृद्गणाः। इति वाचो ब्रुवन्त्यस्ताः स्त्रियः प्रेम्णा धनञ्जयम्
They said, 'Those who gain the strength of his arms cannot remain enemies,' thus speaking words of affection for Dhanañjaya.
