तान्सर्वास्तत्र दृष्ट्वाऽथ मुदा युक्तो धनञ्जयटः। वशे चक्रे स रत्नानि लेभे च सुबहूनि च
Having seen all those there, Dhananjaya was filled with joy; he brought them under his control and obtained many precious jewels.
ततो निषधमासाद्य गिरिस्थानजयत्प्रभुः। अथ राजन्नतिक्रम्य निषधं शैलमायतम्
Then, reaching the mountain region of Nishadha, the mighty one conquered it; O King, after passing beyond the vast Nishadha mountain,
विवेश मध्यमं वर्षं पार्थो दिव्यमिलावृतम्। तत्र दिव्योपमान्दिव्यान्पुरुषान्देवदर्शनान्
Partha entered the central region, adorned with divine groves; there he saw men of divine appearance, like the gods themselves.
अदृष्टपूर्वान्सुभगान्स ददर्श धनञ्जयः। सदनानि च शुभ्राणि नारीश्चाप्सरसंनिभाः
Dhananjaya beheld wondrous and fortunate beings never seen before, splendid dwellings, and women resembling apsaras.
दृष्ट्वा तानजयद्रम्यान्स तैश्च ददृशे तदा। जित्वा च तान्महाभागान्करे च विनिवेश्य च
Having seen those delightful ones, Arjuna was observed by them as well; he conquered those illustrious beings and brought them under his sway.
रत्नान्यादाय दिव्यानि भूषणान्यासनैः सह। उदीचीमथ राजेन्द्र ययौ पार्थो मुदाऽन्वितः
Taking divine jewels and ornaments, along with seats, Partha, filled with joy, then proceeded northward, O King.
स ददर्श ततो मेरुं शिखरीणां प्रभुं महत्। तं काञ्चनमयं दिव्यं चतुर्वणं दुरासदम्
Thereafter he beheld Meru, the lord of peaks, vast and golden, divine, four-sided, and difficult to approach.
उन्नतं शतसाहस्रं योजनानां तु सुस्थितम्। ज्वलन्तमचलं मेरुं तेजोराशिमनुत्तमम्
Lofty, well-established for a hundred thousand yojanas, blazing, the immovable Meru, an unsurpassed mass of brilliance.
आक्षिपन्तं प्रभां भानोः स्वशृङ्गैः काञ्चनोज्ज्वलैः। काञ्चनाभरणं दिव्यदेवगन्धर्वसेवितम्
With its golden, radiant summits seizing the light of the sun, adorned with golden ornaments, attended by divine gods and Gandharvas.
अप्रमेयमनाधृष्यमधर्मबहुलैर्जनैः। व्यालैराचरितं धोरैर्दिव्यौषधिविदीपितम्
Immeasurable, unassailable by people full of unrighteousness, inhabited by serpents and fierce beasts, illuminated by divine herbs.
स्वर्गमावृत्य तिष्ठन्तमुच्छ्रायेण महागिरिम्। अगम्यं मनसाप्यन्यैर्नदीवृक्षसमन्वितम्
That great mountain, towering and reaching up to heaven, covered with rivers and trees, is unattainable even in thought by others.
नानाविहगसङ्घैश्च नादितं सुमनोहरैः। तं दृष्टा फल्गुनो मेरुं प्रीतिमानभवत्तदा
Resounding with many delightful flocks of birds, when Phalguna saw Meru, he became filled with joy.
मेरोरिलावृतं दिव्यं सर्वतः परिमण्डितम्। मेरोस्तु दक्षिणे पार्श्वे जम्बूर्नाम वनस्पतिः
The divine Ilavrita region, all around Meru, is beautifully adorned; on the southern side of Meru stands the tree called Jambu.
नित्यपुष्पफलोपेवः सिद्धचारणसेवितः। आस्वर्गमुच्छ्रिता राजंस्तस्य शाखा वनस्पतेः
Ever blossoming and fruitful, attended by Siddhas and Charanas, its branches, O King, rise up to heaven.
यस्य नाम्ना त्विदं द्वीपं जन्बूद्वीपमिति स्मृतम्। तां च जम्बूं ददर्शाथ सव्यसाची परन्तपः
By its name, this continent is remembered as Jambudvipa; and Savyasachi, the scorcher of foes, beheld that Jambu tree.
तौ दृष्ट्वाऽप्रतिमौ लोके जम्बूं मेरुं च संस्थितौ। प्रतीमानभवद्राजन्सर्वतः स विलोकयन्
Having seen those two peerless in the world—the Jambu tree and Meru standing together—the king became filled with wonder, gazing all around.
तत्र लेभे ततो जिष्णुः सिद्धैर्दिव्यैश्च चारणैः। रत्नानि बहुसाहस्रं दत्तान्याभरणानि च
There, Arjuna received from the Siddhas and celestial Charanas thousands of precious gems and ornaments.
वासांसि च महार्हाणि तत्र लब्ध्वाऽर्जुनस्तदा। आमन्त्रयित्वा तान्सर्वान्यज्ञमुद्दिश्य वै गुरोः
Having obtained there garments of great value, Arjuna then, after addressing them all with reference to the sacrifice for his teacher,
अथादाय बहून्रत्नान्गमनाययोपचक्रमे। मेरुं प्रदक्षिणीकृत्य प्रवतप्रवरं प्रभुः
took many gems and began his journey; the mighty one circumambulated Meru, the foremost of mountains.
ययौ जम्बूनदीतीरे नदीं श्रेष्ठां विलोकयन्। स तां मनोरमां दिव्यां जम्बूस्वादुरसावहाम्
He went along the bank of the Jambu river, beholding that most excellent river, charming and divine, whose waters tasted sweet like the jambu fruit.
हैमपक्षिगणैर्जुष्टां सौवर्णजलजाकुलाम्। हैमपङ्कां हैमजलां सौवर्णोज्ज्वलवालुकाम्
It was filled with flocks of golden birds, crowded with golden lotuses, with golden mud, golden waters, and shining golden sands.
क्वचित्मुपिष्पितैः पूर्णां सौवर्णकुसुमोत्पलैः। क्वचित्तीररुहैः कीर्णां हैमपुष्पैः सुपुष्पितैः
In some places it was filled with blooming golden lotuses and water-lilies; in other places, its banks were scattered with splendid golden flowers from blossoming trees.
तीर्थैश्च रुक्मसोपानैः सर्वतः समलङ्कुताम्। विमलैर्मणिजालैश्च नृत्तगीतरवैर्युताम्
Its banks were adorned everywhere with sacred bathing places and golden steps, with pure networks of jewels, and resounded with the sounds of dance and song.
दीप्तैर्हेमवितानैश्च समन्ताच्छोभितां शुभाम्। तथाविधां नदीं दृष्ट्वा पार्थस्तां प्रशशंस ह
It was splendid all around with shining golden canopies; seeing such a river, Partha praised it.
दृष्टपूर्वां राजेन्द्र दृष्ट्वा हर्षमवाप च। दर्शनीयां नदीतीरे पुरुषान्सुमनोहरान्
Having seen that river, which he had never seen before, O king, he felt joy, and on its banks he beheld men of wondrous beauty.
तान्नदीसलिलाहारान्सदारानमरोपमान्। नित्यं सुखमुदा युक्तान्सर्वालङ्कारशोभितान्
He saw them, who lived on the river's waters, with their wives, resembling immortals, always endowed with happiness and joy, adorned with every ornament.
तेभ्यो बहूनि रत्नानि तदा लेभे धनञ्जयः। दिव्यजम्बूफलं हैमं भूषणानि च पेशलम्
From them, Dhananjaya then received many gems, divine golden jambu fruits, and exquisite ornaments.
लब्ध्वा तान्दुर्लभान्पार्थः प्रतीचीं प्रययौ दिशम्। नागानां रक्षितं देशमजयश्च पुनस्ततः
Having obtained those rare treasures, Partha went westward, and again conquered the land guarded by the Nagas.
ततो गन्वा महाराज वारुणीं पाकशासनिः। गन्धमादनमासाद्य ततस्तानजयत्प्रभुः
Then, O king, the wielder of the thunderbolt, having gone to Varuni, reached Gandhamadana and there conquered those regions.
तं गन्धमादनं राजन्नतिक्रम्य ततोऽर्जुनः। केतुमालं ददर्शाथ वर्षं रत्नसमन्वितम्
Having passed beyond Gandhamadana, Arjuna then saw Ketumala, a land filled with gems.
