विजिग्ये शाकलद्वीपे प्रतिविन्ध्यं च पार्थिवम्। कलद्वीपवासाश्च सप्तद्वीपेषु ये नृपाः
He conquered the king of Prativindhya in the island of Shakala, and also those kings dwelling in Kaladwipa, and the rulers in the seven islands.
अर्जुनस्य च सैन्यस्थैर्विग्रहस्तुमुलोऽभवत्। तान्सर्वानजयत्पार्तो धर्मराजप्रियेप्सया
A tumultuous conflict arose between Arjuna's forces and those kings; Partha defeated them all, desiring to please Dharmaraja.
तैरेव सहितः सर्वैः प्रग्ज्योतिषमुपाद्रवत्
With all of them accompanying him, he advanced toward Pragjyotisha.
तत्र राजा महानासीद्भगदत्तो विशाम्पते। तेनासीत्सुमहद्युद्धं पाण्डवस्य महात्मनः
There was a great king, Bhagadatta, lord of men; with him, the high-souled Pandava engaged in a tremendous battle.
स किरातैश्च चीनैश्च वृतः प्राग्ज्योतिषोऽभवत्। अन्यैश्च बहुभिर्योधैः सागरानुपवासिभिः
Bhagadatta of Pragjyotisha was surrounded by Kiratas and Chinas, and by many other warriors dwelling near the ocean.
ततः स दिवसानष्टौ योधयित्वा धनञ्जयम्। प्रहसन्नब्रवीद्राजा सङ्ग्रामविगतक्रमम्
Then, after fighting Dhananjaya for eight days, the king, smiling, addressed him, the battle having lost its momentum.
उपपन्नं महाबाहो त्वयि कौरवनन्दन। पाकशासनदायादे वीर्यमाहवशोभिनि
It is fitting, O mighty-armed, O joy of the Kurus, that you possess the valor befitting the heir of the lord of the gods, shining in battle.
अहं सखा महेन्द्रस्य शक्रादनवरो रणे। न शक्ष्यामि च ते तात स्थातुं प्रमुखतो युधि
I am a friend of Mahendra, and in battle, I am not inferior to Shakra; yet, O child, I am unable to stand before you in combat.
त्वमीप्सितं पाण्डवेयं ब्रूहि किं करवाणि ते। यद्वक्ष्यसि महाबाहो तत्करिष्यामि पुत्रक
O son of Pandu, speak what you desire; what shall I do for you? Whatever you say, O mighty-armed, that I shall accomplish, O child.
कुरूणामृषभो राजा धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। धर्मज्ञः सत्यसन्धश्च यज्वा विपुलदक्षिणः
The king, Yudhishthira, bull among the Kurus, is the son of Dharma; he is righteous, truthful, a performer of sacrifices, and generous in gifts.
तस्य पार्थिवतामीप्से करस्तस्मै प्रदीयताम्। भवान्पितृसखश्चैव प्रीयमाणो मयापि च। ततो नाज्ञापयामि त्वां प्रीतिपूर्वं प्रदीयताम्
I seek for him the sovereignty; let tribute be given to him. You are a friend of my father, and you are dear to me as well; therefore, I do not command you, let it be given gladly.
कुन्तीमातर्यथा मे त्वं तथा राजा युधिष्ठिरः। सर्वमेतत्करिष्यामि किं चान्यत्करवाणि ते
Just as you are to me like my mother Kunti, so is King Yudhishthira; I shall do all this, and what else shall I do for you?
एवमुक्तः प्रत्युवाच भगदत्तं धनञ्जयः। अनेनैव कृतं सर्वं भविष्यत्यनुजानता
Thus addressed, Dhananjaya replied to Bhagadatta: 'All this has been accomplished by your consent alone.'
तं विजित्य महाबाहुः कुन्तीपुत्रो धनञ्जयः। प्रययावुत्तरां तस्माद्दिशं धनदपालिताम्
Having conquered him, the mighty-armed son of Kunti, Dhananjaya, proceeded towards the northern region, protected by Kubera.
अन्तर्गिरिं च कौन्तेयस्तथैव च बहिर्गिरिम्। तथैवोपगिरं चैव विजिग्ये पुरुषर्षभः
The son of Kunti, the best among men, conquered the inner mountains, the outer mountains, and likewise the upagiri mountains.
विजित्य पर्वतान्सर्वान्ये च तत्र नराधिपाः। तान्वशे स्थापयित्वा स धनान्यादाय सर्वशः
Having subdued all the mountains and the kings there, he placed them under his control and took all their wealth.
तैरेव सहितः सर्वैरनुरज्य च तान्नुपान्। उलूकवासिनं राजन्बृहन्तमुपजग्मिवान्
Accompanied by all those rulers, having won their allegiance, he approached Brihanta, lord of the Ulukas, O King.
मृदङ्गवरनादेन रथनेमिस्वनेन च। हस्तिनां च निनादेन कम्पयन्वसुधामिमाम्
With the resounding beat of excellent drums, the noise of chariot wheels, and the trumpeting of elephants, he shook the earth.
ततो बृहन्तस्त्वरितो बलेन चतुरङ्गिणा। निष्क्रम्य नगरात्तस्माद्योधयामास फाल्गुनम्
Then Brihanta, in haste and with his fourfold army, sallied forth from the city and engaged Phalguna in battle.
सुमहान्सन्निपातोऽभूद्धनञ्जयबृहन्तयोः। न शशाक बृहन्तस्तु सोढुं पाण्डवविक्रमम्
A great encounter took place between Dhananjaya and Brihanta; but Brihanta could not withstand the valor of the Pandava.
सोऽविषह्यतमं मत्वा कौन्तेयं पर्वतेश्वरः। उपावर्तत दुर्धर्षो रत्नान्यादाय सर्वशः
Considering the son of Kunti to be irresistible, the lord of the mountains, though difficult to overcome, withdrew, taking all his jewels.
स तद्राज्यमवस्थाप्य उलूकसहितो ययौ। सेनाबिन्दुमथो राजन्राज्यादाशु समाक्षिपत्
Establishing that kingdom, he departed with the Ulukas; and, O King, quickly seized the army of Senabindu from his realm.
मोदापुरं वामवेदं सुदामानं सुसङ्कुलम्। उलूकानुत्तरांश्चैव तांश्च राज्ञः समानयत्
He brought together Modapura, Vamaveda, Sudamana, the populous Susankula, the northern Ulukas, and those kings.
तत्रस्थः पुरुषैरेव धर्मराजस्य शासनात्। किरीटी जितवान्राजन्देशान्पञ्चगणांस्ततः
There, by the command of King Yudhishthira, Kiriti conquered those five groups of lands with their people.
स देवप्रस्थमासाद्य सेनाबिन्दोः पुरं प्रति। बलेन चतुरङ्गेण निवेशमकरोत्प्रभुः
Reaching Devaprastha, he advanced towards the city of Senabindu and encamped there with his fourfold army.
स तैः परिवृतः सर्वैर्विष्वगश्वं नराधिपम्।। अभ्यगच्छन्महातेजाः पौरवं पुरुषर्षभ
Surrounded on all sides by those kings, the illustrious son of Kunti approached the Paura king, the best among men.
विजित्य चाहवे शूरान्पार्वतीयान्महारथान्। जिगाय सेनया राजन्पुरं पौरवरक्षितम्
Having vanquished in battle the heroic mountain warriors and great chariot-fighters, he conquered the city guarded by the Paura king with his army.
पौरवं युधि निर्जित्य दस्यून्पर्वतवासिनः। गणानुत्सवसङ्केतानजयत्सप्त पाण्डवः
Defeating the Paura king in battle and the mountain-dwelling robbers, the Pandava subdued seven festive and powerful clans.
ततः काश्मीरकान्वीरान्क्षत्रियान्क्षत्रियर्षभः। व्यजयल्लोहितं चैव मण्डलैर्दशभिः सह
Then the bull among Kshatriyas conquered the valiant Kshatriyas of Kashmir and Lohita, along with ten mandalas.
ततस्त्रिगर्ताः कौन्तेयं दार्वाः कोकनदास्तथा। क्षत्रिया बहवो राजन्नुपावर्तन्त सर्वशः
After that, the Trigartas, Darvas, Kokanadas, and many other Kshatriyas, O King, all submitted to the son of Kunti.
