धनञ्जयवचः श्रुत्वा धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः स्निग्धगम्भीरनादिन्यां तं गिरा प्रत्यभाषत
Hearing Dhananjaya's words, King Yudhishthira, with a voice gentle and deep, replied to him.
स्वस्ति वाच्यार्हतो विप्रान्प्रयाहि भरतर्षभ। दुर्हृदामप्रहर्षाय सुहृदां नन्दनाय च
Invoke blessings from worthy Brahmins and depart, O bull among Bharatas, for the delight of friends and the discouragement of foes.
विजयस्ते ध्रुवं पार्थ प्रियं काममवाप्स्यसि। इत्युक्तः प्रययौ पार्थः सैन्येन महता वृतः
Victory is certain for you, Partha; you will surely obtain your desired wish. Thus addressed, Partha departed, surrounded by a great army.
अग्निदत्तेन दिव्येन रथेनाद्भुतकर्मणा। तथैव भीमसेनोऽपि यमौ च पुरुषर्षभौ
With the divine chariot given by Agni, wondrous in its deeds, so too Bhimasena and the two sons of Yama, the best among men.
ससैन्याः प्रययुः सर्वे धर्मराजेन पूजिताः। दिशं धनपतेरिष्टामजयत्पाकशासनिः
All departed with their armies, honored by King Yudhishthira; the wielder of the thunderbolt conquered the desired region of the Lord of Wealth.
भीमसेनस्तथा प्राचीं सहदेवस्तु दक्षिणाम्। प्रतीचीं नकुलो राजन्दिशं व्यजयतास्त्रवित्
Bhimasena conquered the east, Sahadeva the south, Nakula the west, and the king, skilled in weapons, conquered his region.
खाण्डवप्रस्थमध्यस्थो धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः। आसीत्परमया लक्ष्म्या सुहृद्गणवृतः प्रभुः
King Yudhishthira, dwelling in the midst of Khāṇḍavaprastha, remained surrounded by friends, endowed with supreme prosperity.
दिशामभिजयं ब्रह्मन्विस्तरेणानुकीर्तय। न हि तृप्यामि पूर्वेषां शृण्वानश्चरितं महत्
O Brahman, recount in detail the conquest of the directions; for I am never satisfied hearing the great deeds of the ancients.
धनञ्जयस्य वक्ष्यामि विजयं पूर्वमेव ते। यौगपद्येन पार्थैर्हि निर्जितेयं वसुन्धरा
I will first tell you of Dhananjaya's victory; for the earth was conquered simultaneously by the sons of Pandu.
अवाप्य राजा राज्यार्धं कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। महत्त्वे राजशब्दस्य मनश्चक्रे महामनाः
Having obtained half the kingdom, Yudhishthira, son of Kunti, with a great mind, set his heart upon the greatness of the royal title.
तदा क्षात्रं विदित्वाऽस्य पृथिवीविजयं प्रति। अमर्षात्पार्थिवेन्द्राणां तं समेयाय वारयत्
Then, knowing his royal prowess regarding the conquest of the earth, out of resentment, the lords of the land gathered to oppose him.
तत्समेत्य भुवः क्षात्रं रथनागाश्वपत्तिमत्। अभ्ययात्पार्थिवं जिष्णुं मोघं कर्तुं जनाधिप
Gathering together, the royal forces, with chariots, elephants, horses, and infantry, advanced against the victorious prince, intending to thwart him.
तत्पार्थः पार्थिवं क्षात्रं युयुत्सुं परमाहवे। प्रत्युद्ययौ महाबाहुस्तरसा पाकशासनिः
Then Partha, the mighty-armed wielder of the thunderbolt, swiftly confronted the royal forces eager for battle in the great conflict.
तद्भग्रं पार्थिवं क्षात्रं पार्थेनाक्लिष्टकर्मणा। वायुनेव घनानीकं तूलीभूतं ययौ दिशः
That royal force, shattered by Partha's flawless deeds, scattered in all directions like a mass of clouds dispersed by the wind.
तज्जित्वा पार्थिवं क्षात्रं समरे परवीरहा। ययौ तदा वशे कर्तुमुदीचीं पाण्डुनन्दनः
Having defeated the royal warriors in battle, the destroyer of enemy heroes, the son of Pandu, then proceeded to bring the northern regions under his control.
पूर्वं कुलिङ्गविषये वशे चक्रे महीपतिम्। धनञ्जयो महाबाहुर्नातितीव्रेण कर्मणा
First, in the land of Kulingas, the mighty-armed Dhananjaya subdued the king, not by excessively harsh actions.
तेनैव सहितः प्रायाज्जिष्णुः साल्वपुरं प्रति। स साल्वपुरमासाद्य साल्वराजं धनञ्जयटः
Together with him, Jishnu advanced toward the city of Salva; upon reaching Salva, Dhananjaya confronted the king of Salva.
विक्रमेणोग्रधन्वानं वशे चक्रे महामनाः। तं पार्थः सहसा जित्वा द्युमत्सेनं महीश्वरम्
With valor, the great-minded Partha subdued the fierce archer; having swiftly conquered Dyumatsena, the lord of the earth,
कृत्वा स सैनिकं प्रायात्कटदेशमरिन्दमः। तत्र पार्थो रणे जिष्णुः सुनाभं वसुधाधिपम्
Having accomplished this, the subduer of enemies, accompanied by his army, proceeded to the region of Katta; there, in battle, Partha, Jishnu, subdued Sunabha, the ruler of the land.
विक्रमेण वशे कृत्वा कृतवाननुसैनिकम्। एतेन सहितो राजन्सव्यसाची परन्तपः
By his prowess, he brought Sunabha under his control, along with his army; with him, O King, Savyasachi, the scorcher of foes, continued onward.
विजिग्ये शाकलद्वीपे प्रतिविन्ध्यं च पार्थिवम्। कलद्वीपवासाश्च सप्तद्वीपेषु ये नृपाः
He conquered the king of Prativindhya in the island of Shakala, and also those kings dwelling in Kaladwipa, and the rulers in the seven islands.
अर्जुनस्य च सैन्यस्थैर्विग्रहस्तुमुलोऽभवत्। तान्सर्वानजयत्पार्तो धर्मराजप्रियेप्सया
A tumultuous conflict arose between Arjuna's forces and those kings; Partha defeated them all, desiring to please Dharmaraja.
तैरेव सहितः सर्वैः प्रग्ज्योतिषमुपाद्रवत्
With all of them accompanying him, he advanced toward Pragjyotisha.
तत्र राजा महानासीद्भगदत्तो विशाम्पते। तेनासीत्सुमहद्युद्धं पाण्डवस्य महात्मनः
There was a great king, Bhagadatta, lord of men; with him, the high-souled Pandava engaged in a tremendous battle.
स किरातैश्च चीनैश्च वृतः प्राग्ज्योतिषोऽभवत्। अन्यैश्च बहुभिर्योधैः सागरानुपवासिभिः
Bhagadatta of Pragjyotisha was surrounded by Kiratas and Chinas, and by many other warriors dwelling near the ocean.
ततः स दिवसानष्टौ योधयित्वा धनञ्जयम्। प्रहसन्नब्रवीद्राजा सङ्ग्रामविगतक्रमम्
Then, after fighting Dhananjaya for eight days, the king, smiling, addressed him, the battle having lost its momentum.
उपपन्नं महाबाहो त्वयि कौरवनन्दन। पाकशासनदायादे वीर्यमाहवशोभिनि
It is fitting, O mighty-armed, O joy of the Kurus, that you possess the valor befitting the heir of the lord of the gods, shining in battle.
अहं सखा महेन्द्रस्य शक्रादनवरो रणे। न शक्ष्यामि च ते तात स्थातुं प्रमुखतो युधि
I am a friend of Mahendra, and in battle, I am not inferior to Shakra; yet, O child, I am unable to stand before you in combat.
त्वमीप्सितं पाण्डवेयं ब्रूहि किं करवाणि ते। यद्वक्ष्यसि महाबाहो तत्करिष्यामि पुत्रक
O son of Pandu, speak what you desire; what shall I do for you? Whatever you say, O mighty-armed, that I shall accomplish, O child.
कुरूणामृषभो राजा धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। धर्मज्ञः सत्यसन्धश्च यज्वा विपुलदक्षिणः
The king, Yudhishthira, bull among the Kurus, is the son of Dharma; he is righteous, truthful, a performer of sacrifices, and generous in gifts.
