एवं सम्भाष्य कौन्तेयः प्रादाद्रथवरं प्रभोः
Having spoken thus, Kaunteya presented the excellent chariot to the Lord.
प्रतिगृह्य तु गोविन्दो जरासन्धस्य तं रथम्
Govinda, accepting that chariot of Jarasandha, took it in hand.
प्रहृष्टस्तस्य मुमुदे फल्गुनेन जनार्दनः। प्रीतिमानभवद्राजन्धर्मराजपुरस्कृतः
Janardana rejoiced greatly with Phalguna; honored by Dharmaraja, he became full of affection.
यथावयः समागम्य भ्रातृभिः सह पाण्डवः। सत्कृत्य पूजयित्वा च विससर्ज नराधिपान्
Then, having gathered with his brothers, the Pandava honored and worshipped the kings, and respectfully dismissed them.
युधिष्ठिराभ्यनुज्ञातास्ते नृपा हृष्टमानसाः। जग्मुः स्वदेशांस्त्वरिता यानैरुच्चावचैस्ततः
Permitted by Yudhishthira, those kings, their hearts delighted, departed swiftly to their own lands in vehicles of various kinds.
एवं पुरुषशार्दूलो महाबुद्धिर्जनार्दनः। पाण्डवैर्घातयामास जरासन्धमरिं तदा
Thus, the tiger among men, Janardana of great intelligence, together with the Pandavas, slew Jarasandha, their enemy, at that time.
घातयित्वा जरासन्धं बुद्धिपूर्वमरिन्दमः। धर्मराजमनुज्ञाप्य पृथां कृष्णां च भारत
Having slain Jarasandha with forethought, the destroyer of foes, after seeking permission from Dharmaraja, Pritha, and Krishna, O Bharata,
सुभद्रां भीमसेनं च फाल्गुनं यमजौ तथा। धौम्यमामन्त्रयित्वा च प्रययौ स्वां पुरीं प्रति
He consulted with Subhadra, Bhimasena, Phalguna, the twin sons of Yama, and Dhaumya, and then departed for his own city.
पाण्डवैरनुधावद्भिर्युधिष्ठिरपुरोगमैः। हर्षेण महता युक्तः प्राप्य चानुत्तमं यशः। जगाम हृष्टः कृष्णस्तु पुनर्द्वारवतीं पुरीम्
Followed by the Pandavas, with Yudhishthira at their head, filled with great joy and having attained unsurpassed fame, Krishna, delighted, returned again to the city of Dwaravati.
तेनैव रथमुख्येन मनसस्तुल्यगामिना। धर्मराजविसृष्टेन दिव्येनानादयन्दिशः
With that foremost chariot, moving as swiftly as the mind, released by Dharmaraja, resounding in all directions with its divine sound,
ततो युधिष्ठिरमुखाः पाण्डवा भरतर्षभ। प्रदक्षिणमकुर्वन्त कृष्णमक्लिष्टकारिणम्
Then, O bull among Bharatas, the Pandavas, led by Yudhishthira, circumambulated Krishna, the doer of flawless deeds.
ततो गते भगवति कृष्णे देवकिनन्दने। जयं लब्ध्वा सुविपुलं राज्ञां दत्त्वाऽभयं तदा
After the blessed Krishna, son of Devaki, had departed, having achieved great victory and granted safety to the kings,
संवर्धितं यशो भूयः कर्मणा तेन भारत। द्रौपद्याः पाण्डवा राजन्परां प्रीतिमवर्धयन्
By that deed, O Bharata, their fame was further increased; the Pandavas, O king, brought supreme delight to Draupadi.
तस्मिन्काले तु यद्युक्तं धर्मकामार्थसंहितम्। तद्राजा धर्मतश्चक्रे प्रजापालनकीर्तनम्
At that time, whatever was appropriate, connected with righteousness, desire, and wealth, the king performed, renowned for protecting his subjects according to dharma.
ऋषेस्तद्वचनं स्मृत्वा निशश्वास युधिष्ठिरः। धर्म धर्मभृतां श्रेष्ठः कर्तुमिच्छन्परन्तपः
Remembering the words of the sage, Yudhishthira sighed; the best among those who uphold dharma, desiring to act, scorcher of foes.
तस्येङ्गितज्ञो बीभत्सुः सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरः। संविवर्तयिषुः कामं पावकात्पाकशासनिः
Understanding his intent, Bhimasena, foremost among all wielders of weapons, wished to fulfill his desire, like the thunderbolt from fire.
प्राप्तं प्राप्य धनुः श्रेष्ठमक्षय्यौ च महेषुधी। रथं ध्वजं सभां चैव युधिष्ठिरमभाषत
Having obtained the finest bow, inexhaustible arrows, a mighty chariot, a banner, and the assembly, Yudhishthira spoke.
धनुरस्त्रं शरा वीर्यं पक्षो भूमिर्यशो बलम्। प्राप्तमेतन्मया राजन्दुष्प्रापं यदभीप्सितम्
Bow, missiles, arrows, valor, wings, land, fame, and strength—all these, O King, I have attained, though they are difficult to acquire and desired by many.
तस्य कृत्यमहं मन्ये कोशस्य परिवर्धनम्। करमाहारयिष्यामि राज्ञः सर्वान्नृपोत्तम
I consider the increase of the treasury to be my duty; I will collect tribute from all kings for you, O foremost of rulers.
विजयाय प्रयास्यामि दिशं धनदपालिताम्। तिथावथ मुहूर्ते च नक्षत्रे चाभिपूजिते
I will set out for victory toward the region guarded by the Lord of Wealth, at the auspicious time, moment, and honored constellation.
धनञ्जयवचः श्रुत्वा धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः स्निग्धगम्भीरनादिन्यां तं गिरा प्रत्यभाषत
Hearing Dhananjaya's words, King Yudhishthira, with a voice gentle and deep, replied to him.
स्वस्ति वाच्यार्हतो विप्रान्प्रयाहि भरतर्षभ। दुर्हृदामप्रहर्षाय सुहृदां नन्दनाय च
Invoke blessings from worthy Brahmins and depart, O bull among Bharatas, for the delight of friends and the discouragement of foes.
विजयस्ते ध्रुवं पार्थ प्रियं काममवाप्स्यसि। इत्युक्तः प्रययौ पार्थः सैन्येन महता वृतः
Victory is certain for you, Partha; you will surely obtain your desired wish. Thus addressed, Partha departed, surrounded by a great army.
अग्निदत्तेन दिव्येन रथेनाद्भुतकर्मणा। तथैव भीमसेनोऽपि यमौ च पुरुषर्षभौ
With the divine chariot given by Agni, wondrous in its deeds, so too Bhimasena and the two sons of Yama, the best among men.
ससैन्याः प्रययुः सर्वे धर्मराजेन पूजिताः। दिशं धनपतेरिष्टामजयत्पाकशासनिः
All departed with their armies, honored by King Yudhishthira; the wielder of the thunderbolt conquered the desired region of the Lord of Wealth.
भीमसेनस्तथा प्राचीं सहदेवस्तु दक्षिणाम्। प्रतीचीं नकुलो राजन्दिशं व्यजयतास्त्रवित्
Bhimasena conquered the east, Sahadeva the south, Nakula the west, and the king, skilled in weapons, conquered his region.
खाण्डवप्रस्थमध्यस्थो धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः। आसीत्परमया लक्ष्म्या सुहृद्गणवृतः प्रभुः
King Yudhishthira, dwelling in the midst of Khāṇḍavaprastha, remained surrounded by friends, endowed with supreme prosperity.
दिशामभिजयं ब्रह्मन्विस्तरेणानुकीर्तय। न हि तृप्यामि पूर्वेषां शृण्वानश्चरितं महत्
O Brahman, recount in detail the conquest of the directions; for I am never satisfied hearing the great deeds of the ancients.
धनञ्जयस्य वक्ष्यामि विजयं पूर्वमेव ते। यौगपद्येन पार्थैर्हि निर्जितेयं वसुन्धरा
I will first tell you of Dhananjaya's victory; for the earth was conquered simultaneously by the sons of Pandu.
अवाप्य राजा राज्यार्धं कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। महत्त्वे राजशब्दस्य मनश्चक्रे महामनाः
Having obtained half the kingdom, Yudhishthira, son of Kunti, with a great mind, set his heart upon the greatness of the royal title.
