जरासन्धात्मजश्चैव सहदेवो महामनाः। निर्ययौ सजनामात्यः पुरस्कृत्य पुरोहितम्
Sahadeva, the noble-minded son of Jarasandha, departed with his people and ministers, led by his family priest.
स नीचैः प्रणतो भूत्वा बहुरत्नपुरोगमः। सहदेवो नृणां देवं वासुदेवमुपस्थितः
Approaching Vasudeva, the god among men, Sahadeva bowed low, bringing many precious jewels before him.
भयार्ताय ततस्तस्मै कृष्णो दत्त्वाऽभयं तदा। आददेऽस्य महार्हाणि रत्नानि पुरुषोत्तमः
Then Krishna, the supreme person, granted fearlessness to the terrified Sahadeva and accepted his splendid gifts.
यत्कृतं पुरुषव्याघ्र मम पित्रा जनार्दन। तत्ते हृदि महाबाहो न कार्यं पुरुषोत्तम
O Janardana, whatever my father did to you, O mighty-armed one, let that not remain in your heart, O best of men.
त्वां प्रपन्नोऽस्मि गोविन्द प्रासदं कुरु मे प्रभो। पितुरिच्छामि संस्कारं कर्तुं देवकिनन्दन
I take refuge in you, Govinda; grant me your favor, Lord. O son of Devaki, I wish to perform the funeral rites for my father.
त्वत्तोऽभ्यनुज्ञां सम्प्राप्य भीमसेनात्तथार्जुनात्। निर्भयो विचरिष्यामि यथाकामं यथासुखम्
Having received permission from you, as well as from Bhimasena and Arjuna, I shall live without fear, as I wish and in comfort.
एवं विज्ञाप्यमानस्य सहदेवस्य मारिष। प्रहृष्टो देवकीपुत्रः पाण्डवै च महारथौ
Thus addressed by Sahadeva, O Marisha, the son of Devaki and the two great warriors of the Pandavas were delighted.
क्रियतां संस्क्रिया राजन्पितुस्त इति चाब्रुवन्। तच्छ्रुत्वा वासुदेवस्य पार्थयोश्च स मागधः
They said, 'Let the funeral rites for your father be performed, O King.' Hearing this from Vasudeva and the sons of Pritha, the Magadha prince—
प्रविश्य नगरं तूर्णं सह मन्त्रिभिरप्युत। चितां चन्दनकाष्ठैश्च कालेयसरलैस्तथा
Quickly entered the city with his ministers, and prepared a funeral pyre with sandalwood, black aloe, and sarala wood.
कालागरुसुनगन्धैश्च तैलैश्च विविधैरपि। घृतधाराशतैश्चैव सुमनोभिश्च भारत
He adorned it with fragrant substances like black aloe, sunanda, various oils, streams of clarified butter, and many flowers, O Bharata.
समन्तादेव कीर्यन्तोऽदहन्त मगधाधिपम्। उदकं तस्य चक्रेऽथ सहदेवः सहानुजः
All around, they scattered offerings and performed the water-rite for the king of Magadha; then Sahadeva, with his younger brother, conducted the water ceremony for him.
कृत्वा पितुः स्वर्गगतिं निर्ययौ यत्र केशवः। पाण्डवौ च महाभागौ भीमसेनार्जुनावुभौ
Having ensured his father's ascent to heaven, Sahadeva departed to where Keshava was, along with the two illustrious Pandavas, Bhimasena and Arjuna.
स प्रह्वः प्राञ्जलिर्भूत्वा व्यज्ञापयत माधवम्
He approached Madhava, bowing low with joined palms, and made his request.
हस्तिनोऽश्वाश्च गोविन्द वासांसि विविधानि च। दीयतां धर्मराजाय यथा वा मन्यते भवान्
O Govinda, let elephants, horses, and various garments be given to King Yudhishthira, or as you deem appropriate.
भयार्ताय ततस्तस्मै कृत्वा कृष्णोऽभयं तदा। अभ्यषिञ्चत राजानं सहदेवं जनार्दनः
Then Krishna granted him freedom from fear, for he was terrified, and Janardana anointed Sahadeva as king.
मागधानां महीपालं जरासन्धात्मजं तदा। आददे च महार्हाणि रत्नानि पुरुषोत्तमः
At that time, the supreme Purusha took the precious jewels from the king of the Magadhas, the son of Jarasandha.
गत्वैकत्वं स कृष्णेन पार्थाभ्यां चापि सत्कृतः। विवेश मतिमान्त्राजा पुनर्बार्हद्रथं पुरम्
Having been honored by Krishna and the two sons of Pritha, the wise king returned alone to the city of the Barhadrathas.
पार्थाभायं सहितः कृष्णः सर्वैश्च वसुधाधिपैः। यथावयः समागम्य विससर्ज नराधिपान्
Krishna, together with the Pandavas and all the other kings, after gathering as was proper, dismissed the assembled rulers.
विसृज्य सर्वान्नृपतीन्राजसूये महात्मभिः। आगन्तव्यं भवद्भिश्च धर्मराजप्रियेप्सुभिः
Having dismissed all the kings at the Rajasuya, the great-souled ones said, 'You should come again, all who wish to please King Yudhishthira.'
एवमुक्ता माधवेन सर्वे ते वसुधाधिपाः। एवमस्त्विति चाप्युक्त्वा समेताः परया मुदा
Thus addressed by Madhava, all those rulers of the earth replied, 'So be it,' and departed together with great joy.
भीमार्जुनहृषीकेशैः प्रहृष्टाः प्रययुस्तदा। रत्नान्यादाय भूरीणी ज्वलन्तो रिपुसूदनाः
Delighted by Bhima, Arjuna, and Hrishikesha, those destroyers of foes departed, taking with them abundant shining jewels.
कृष्णस्तु सह पार्थाभ्यां श्रिया परमया युतः। रत्नान्यादाय भूरिणी प्रययौ पुरुषर्षभः
Krishna, united with the Pandavas and endowed with supreme splendor, took many precious jewels and departed, the best among men.
इन्द्रप्रस्थमुपागम्य पाण्डवाभ्यां सहाच्युतः। समेत्य धर्मराजानं प्रीयमाणोऽभ्यभाषत
Having arrived at Indraprastha with the Pandavas, Achyuta joyfully approached King Yudhishthira and addressed him.
दिष्ट्या भीमेन बलवाञ्जरासन्धो निपातितः। राजानो मोक्षिताश्चेमे बन्धनान्नृपसत्तम
By fortune, mighty Bhima has slain Jarasandha, and these kings, O best of rulers, have been freed from their bonds.
दिष्ट्या कुशलिनौ चेमौ भीमसेनधनञ्जयौ। पुनः स्वनगरं प्राप्तावक्षताविति भारत
By fortune, Bhimasena and Dhananjaya have returned safely to their city, uninjured, O Bharata.
ततो युधिष्ठिरः कृष्णं पूजयित्वा यथार्हतः। भीमसेनार्जुनौ चैव प्रहृष्टः परिषस्वजे
Then Yudhishthira, having duly honored Krishna and also Bhimasena and Arjuna, embraced them joyfully.
ततः क्षीणे जरासन्धे भ्रातृभ्यां विहितं जयम्। अजातशत्रुरासाद्य मुमुदे भ्रातृभिः सह
After Jarasandha was slain and victory was achieved by his brothers, Ajatashatru rejoiced together with his brothers.
हृष्टश्च धर्मराड्वाक्यं जनार्दनमभाषत। त्वां प्राप्य पुरुषव्याघ्र भीमसेनेन पातितः
The righteous king, delighted, spoke to Janardana: 'Having you, O tiger among men, Bhimasena has slain Jarasandha.'
मागधोऽसौ बलोन्मत्तो जरासन्धः प्रतापवान्। राजसूयं क्रतुश्रेष्ठं प्राप्स्यामि विगतज्वरः
That Magadha king, Jarasandha, intoxicated by his strength and renowned for his prowess, said: 'I will obtain the Rajasuya, the foremost of sacrifices, free from anxiety.'
त्वद्बुद्धिबलमाश्रित्य यागार्होऽस्मि जनार्दन। पीतं पृथिव्याः क्रुद्धेन यशस्ते पुरुषोत्तम
Relying on your wisdom and strength, O Janardana, I am worthy to perform the sacrifice; O best among men, your fame has spread across the earth, even when angered.
