ततः कृष्णं महाबाहुं भ्रातृभ्यां सहितं तदा। रथस्थं मागधा दृष्ट्वा समपद्यन्त विस्मिताः
Then, seeing Krishna of mighty arms, standing on the chariot with his brothers, the Magadhas became utterly astonished.
हयैर्दिव्यैः समायुक्तो रथो वायुसमो जवे। अधिष्ठितः स शुशुभे कृष्णेनातीव भारत
That chariot, yoked to divine horses, swift as the wind, was brilliantly resplendent, O Bharata, being occupied by Krishna.
असङ्गो देवविहितस्तस्मिन्रथवरे ध्वजः। योजनाद्ददृशे श्रीमानिन्द्रायुधसमप्रभः
Upon that best of chariots was a banner, unattached, established by the gods; from a yojana away it was seen, splendid, shining like Indra's weapon.
चिन्तयामास कृष्णोऽथ गरुत्मन्तं स चाभ्ययात्। क्षणे तस्मिन्स तेनासीच्चैत्यवृक्ष इवोत्थितः
Then Krishna contemplated Garuda, and he approached; in that very moment, he stood there, arisen like a sacred tree.
व्यादितास्यैर्महानादैः सह भूतैर्ध्वजालयैः। तस्मिन्रथवरे तस्थौ गुरुत्मान्पन्नगाशनः
With gaping jaws, great roars, accompanied by beings and banner-streamers, Garuda, devourer of serpents, stood upon that best of chariots.
दुर्निरीक्ष्यो हि भूतानां तेजसाऽऽभ्याधिकं बभौ। आदित्य इव मध्याह्ने सहस्रकिरणावृतः
He was hard to gaze upon for creatures, shining with surpassing brilliance, like the sun at midday enveloped in a thousand rays.
न सज्जति वृक्षेषु शस्त्रैश्चापि न रिष्यते। दिव्यो ध्वजवरो राजन्दृश्यते चेह मानुषैः
He does not cling to trees, nor is he harmed by weapons; that divine, foremost banner, O King, is visible here to men.
तमास्थाय रथं दिव्यं पर्जन्यसमनिः स्वनम्। निर्ययौ पुरुषव्याघ्रः पाण्डवाभ्यां सहाच्युतः
Mounting that divine chariot, resounding like thunderclouds, the tiger among men, Achyuta, set out together with the two Pandavas.
यं लेभे वासवाद्राजा वसुस्तस्माद्बृहद्रथः। बृहद्रथात्क्रमेणैव प्राप्तो बार्हद्रथो रथम्
That chariot which the king Vasus received from Vasava, from Brihadratha it passed in succession to the Barhadrathas.
स निर्याय महाबाहुः पुण्डरीकेक्षणस्ततः। गिरिव्रजाद्बहिस्तस्थौ समदेशे महायशाः
Then the mighty-armed, lotus-eyed one, having set out, stood outside Girivraja in a suitable place, famed in the world.
तत्रैनं नागराः सर्वे सत्कारेणाभ्ययुस्तदा। ब्राह्मणप्रमुखा राजन्विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा
There all the citizens, headed by the Brahmanas, approached him with honor, O King, performing the rites as prescribed.
बन्धनाद्विप्रमुक्ताश्च राजानो मधुसूदनम्। पूजयामासुरूचुश्च स्तुतिपूर्वमिदं वचः
And the kings, freed from bondage, worshipped Madhusudana and spoke these words, preceded by praise.
नैतच्चित्रं महाबाहो त्वयि देवकिनन्दने। भीमार्जुनबलोपेते धर्मस्य प्रतिपालनम्
O mighty-armed one, son of Devaki, it is not surprising that you, endowed with the strength of Bhima and Arjuna, uphold righteousness.
जरासन्धह्रदे घोरे दुःखपङ्के निमज्जताम्। राज्ञां समभ्युद्धरमं यदिदं कृतमद्य वै
You have today rescued the kings who were sinking in the dreadful pit of Jarasandha’s prison, mired in suffering.
विष्णो समवसन्नानां गिरिदुर्गे सुदारुणे। दिष्ट्या मोक्षाद्यशो दीप्तमाप्तं ते यदुनन्दन
O Vishnu, O son of Yadu, by good fortune you have gained brilliant fame today by freeing those who were trapped in the terrible mountain fortress.
किं कर्मः पुरुषव्याघ्र शाधि नः प्रणतिस्थितान्। कृतमित्येव तद्विद्वि नृपैर्ययद्यपि दुष्करम्
What should be done next, O tiger among men? Command us, who stand before you in reverence; even if the task is difficult, the kings will accomplish it as you direct.
तानुवाच हृम्पीकेशः समाश्चास्य महामनाः। यिधिष्ठिरो राजसूयं क्रतुमार्हतुमिच्छति
Then Hrishikesha, whose mind is great, spoke to them all: 'If Yudhishthira wishes to perform the Rajasuya sacrifice—'
तस्य धर्मप्रवृत्तस्य पार्थिवत्वं चिकीर्षतः। सर्वैर्भवद्भिर्विज्ञाय साहाय्यं क्रियतामिति
For him, who is devoted to righteousness and seeks sovereign power, let all of you, understanding this, offer your assistance.
ततः सुप्रीतमनसस्ते नृपा नृपसत्तम। तथेत्येवाब्रुवन्सर्वे प्रतिगृह्यास्य तां गिरम्
Then, O best of kings, all the rulers, their hearts greatly pleased, accepted his words and replied, 'So be it.'
रत्नभाजं च दाशार्हं चक्रुस्ते पृथिवीश्वराः। कृच्छ्राञ्जग्राह गोविन्दस्तेषां तदनुकम्पया
The lords of the earth honored Krishna, the best of the Dasharhas, with precious gifts; out of compassion, Govinda accepted their costly jewels.
जरासन्धात्मजश्चैव सहदेवो महामनाः। निर्ययौ सजनामात्यः पुरस्कृत्य पुरोहितम्
Sahadeva, the noble-minded son of Jarasandha, departed with his people and ministers, led by his family priest.
स नीचैः प्रणतो भूत्वा बहुरत्नपुरोगमः। सहदेवो नृणां देवं वासुदेवमुपस्थितः
Approaching Vasudeva, the god among men, Sahadeva bowed low, bringing many precious jewels before him.
भयार्ताय ततस्तस्मै कृष्णो दत्त्वाऽभयं तदा। आददेऽस्य महार्हाणि रत्नानि पुरुषोत्तमः
Then Krishna, the supreme person, granted fearlessness to the terrified Sahadeva and accepted his splendid gifts.
यत्कृतं पुरुषव्याघ्र मम पित्रा जनार्दन। तत्ते हृदि महाबाहो न कार्यं पुरुषोत्तम
O Janardana, whatever my father did to you, O mighty-armed one, let that not remain in your heart, O best of men.
त्वां प्रपन्नोऽस्मि गोविन्द प्रासदं कुरु मे प्रभो। पितुरिच्छामि संस्कारं कर्तुं देवकिनन्दन
I take refuge in you, Govinda; grant me your favor, Lord. O son of Devaki, I wish to perform the funeral rites for my father.
त्वत्तोऽभ्यनुज्ञां सम्प्राप्य भीमसेनात्तथार्जुनात्। निर्भयो विचरिष्यामि यथाकामं यथासुखम्
Having received permission from you, as well as from Bhimasena and Arjuna, I shall live without fear, as I wish and in comfort.
एवं विज्ञाप्यमानस्य सहदेवस्य मारिष। प्रहृष्टो देवकीपुत्रः पाण्डवै च महारथौ
Thus addressed by Sahadeva, O Marisha, the son of Devaki and the two great warriors of the Pandavas were delighted.
क्रियतां संस्क्रिया राजन्पितुस्त इति चाब्रुवन्। तच्छ्रुत्वा वासुदेवस्य पार्थयोश्च स मागधः
They said, 'Let the funeral rites for your father be performed, O King.' Hearing this from Vasudeva and the sons of Pritha, the Magadha prince—
प्रविश्य नगरं तूर्णं सह मन्त्रिभिरप्युत। चितां चन्दनकाष्ठैश्च कालेयसरलैस्तथा
Quickly entered the city with his ministers, and prepared a funeral pyre with sandalwood, black aloe, and sarala wood.
कालागरुसुनगन्धैश्च तैलैश्च विविधैरपि। घृतधाराशतैश्चैव सुमनोभिश्च भारत
He adorned it with fragrant substances like black aloe, sunanda, various oils, streams of clarified butter, and many flowers, O Bharata.
