भीमसेनस्य नादेन जरासन्धस्य चैव ह। किं नु स्याद्धिमवान्भिन्नः किंनुस्विद्दीर्यते मही
Because of the roar of Bhimasena and Jarasandha, people wondered: 'Has the Himalaya been split? Is the earth itself being rent?'
इति वै मागधा जज्ञुर्भीमसेनस्य निखनात्। `ततस्तु भगवान्कृष्णो जरासन्धजिघांसया
Thus did the Magadhas speak, hearing the crash of Bhimasena; then the blessed Krishna, desiring the death of Jarasandha—
भीमसेनं समालोक्य नलं जग्राह पाणिना। द्विधा चिच्छेद वै तत्तु जरासन्धवधं प्रति
Seeing Bhimasena, Krishna took a stick in his hand and broke it in two, as a sign for the slaying of Jarasandha.
ततस्त्वाज्ञाय तस्यैव पादमुत्क्षिप्य मारुतिः। द्विधा बभञ्ज तद्गात्रं प्राक्षिपद्विननाद च
Then, understanding this, the son of Maruti seized Jarasandha's foot, broke his body in two, threw it down, and roared.
पुनः सन्धाय तु तदा जरान्धः प्रतापवान्। भीमेन च समागम्य बाहुयुद्धं चकार ह
But then, joined together again, the powerful Jarasandha, confronting Bhima, engaged in hand-to-hand combat once more.
तयोः समभवद्युद्धं तुमुलं रोमहर्षणम्। सर्वलोकक्षयकरं सर्वभूतभयावहम्
Their battle was fierce and hair-raising, threatening the destruction of all worlds and striking terror into all beings.
पुनः कृष्णस्तमिरिणं द्विधा विच्छिद्य माधवः। व्यत्यस्य प्राक्षिपत्तत्तु जरासन्धवधेप्सया
Again Krishna, the descendant of Madhu, split a stick in two and, reversing it, threw it down, wishing for the death of Jarasandha.
भीमसेनस्तदा ज्ञात्वा निर्बिभेद च मागधम्। द्विधा व्यत्यस्य पादेन प्राक्षिपच्च ननाद ह
Then Bhimasena, understanding, tore apart the king of Magadha, split him in two by the legs, threw him down, and roared.
शुष्कमांसास्थिमेदस्त्वग्भिन्नमस्तिष्कपिण्डकटः। शवभूतस्तदा राजन्पिण्डीकृत इवाबबौ
His flesh, bones, marrow, and skin were dried up, his skull split open; he appeared like a corpse, crushed into a lump, O King.
ततो राज्ञः कुलद्वारि प्रसुप्तमिव तं नृपम्। रात्रौ गतासुमुत्सृज्य निश्चक्रमुररिन्दमाः
Then, at the royal gateway, leaving the king who had departed in the night as if asleep, the subduers of enemies departed.
जरासन्धरथं कृष्णो योजयित्वा पताकिनम्। आरोप्य भ्रातरौ चैव मोक्षयामास बान्धवान्
Krishna yoked Jarasandha's chariot, adorned with banners, placed the two brothers upon it, and released the kinsmen.
ते वै रत्नुभुजं कृष्णं रत्नार्हं पृथिवीश्वराः। राजानं चक्ररासाद्य मोक्षिता महतो भयात्
Those lords of the earth, worthy of jewels, made Krishna, the enjoyer of gems, their king, having been freed from great fear.
अक्षतः शस्त्रसम्पन्नो जितारिः सह राजभिः। रथमास्थाय तं दिव्यं निर्जगाम गिरिव्रजात्
Unharmed, equipped with weapons, the conqueror of foes, together with the kings, mounted that divine chariot and departed from Girivraja.
यः स सोदर्यवान्नाम द्वियोधी कृष्णसारथिः। अभ्यासघाती सन्दृश्यो दुर्जयः सर्वराजभिः
He who is called Sodaryavan, a mighty archer, with Krishna as his charioteer, is a slayer in close combat, visible, and unconquerable by all kings.
भीमार्जुनाभ्यां योधाभ्यामास्थितः कृष्णसारथिः। शुशुभे रथवर्योऽसौ दुर्जयः सर्वधन्विभिः
With Bhima and Arjuna, those warriors, and Krishna as charioteer, that foremost chariot shone, unconquerable by all bowmen.
शक्रविष्णू हि सङ्ग्रामे चेरतुस्तारकामये। रथेन तेन वै कृष्ण उपारुह्य ययौ तदा
Indeed, Indra and Vishnu once moved in battle among the stars with that very chariot; then Krishna ascended it and departed.
एवमेतौ महाबाहू तदा दुष्करकारिणौ। कृष्णप्रणीतौ लोकेऽस्मिन्नथे को द्रष्टुमर्हति
Thus, those two mighty-armed doers of difficult deeds, guided by Krishna, who in this world is able to behold them?
इत्यवोचन्व्रजन्तं तं जरासन्धपुरालयाः। वासुदेवं नरश्रेष्ठं युक्तं वातजवैर्हयैः
So spoke the residents of Jarasandha's city, seeing Vāsudeva, the best of men, proceeding, yoked to horses fleet as the wind.
तप्तचामीकराभेण किङ्किणीजालमालिना। मेघनिर्घोषनादेन जैत्रेणामित्रघातिना
Adorned with a network of tinkling bells, shining like heated gold, with a roar like thunderclouds, that victorious, foe-slaying chariot.
येन शक्रो दानवानां जघान नवतीर्नव। तं प्राप्य समहृष्यन्त रथं ते पुरुषर्थभाः
With which Indra slew ninety-nine hosts of Dānavas—on gaining that chariot, those men of valor rejoiced greatly.
ततः कृष्णं महाबाहुं भ्रातृभ्यां सहितं तदा। रथस्थं मागधा दृष्ट्वा समपद्यन्त विस्मिताः
Then, seeing Krishna of mighty arms, standing on the chariot with his brothers, the Magadhas became utterly astonished.
हयैर्दिव्यैः समायुक्तो रथो वायुसमो जवे। अधिष्ठितः स शुशुभे कृष्णेनातीव भारत
That chariot, yoked to divine horses, swift as the wind, was brilliantly resplendent, O Bharata, being occupied by Krishna.
असङ्गो देवविहितस्तस्मिन्रथवरे ध्वजः। योजनाद्ददृशे श्रीमानिन्द्रायुधसमप्रभः
Upon that best of chariots was a banner, unattached, established by the gods; from a yojana away it was seen, splendid, shining like Indra's weapon.
चिन्तयामास कृष्णोऽथ गरुत्मन्तं स चाभ्ययात्। क्षणे तस्मिन्स तेनासीच्चैत्यवृक्ष इवोत्थितः
Then Krishna contemplated Garuda, and he approached; in that very moment, he stood there, arisen like a sacred tree.
व्यादितास्यैर्महानादैः सह भूतैर्ध्वजालयैः। तस्मिन्रथवरे तस्थौ गुरुत्मान्पन्नगाशनः
With gaping jaws, great roars, accompanied by beings and banner-streamers, Garuda, devourer of serpents, stood upon that best of chariots.
दुर्निरीक्ष्यो हि भूतानां तेजसाऽऽभ्याधिकं बभौ। आदित्य इव मध्याह्ने सहस्रकिरणावृतः
He was hard to gaze upon for creatures, shining with surpassing brilliance, like the sun at midday enveloped in a thousand rays.
न सज्जति वृक्षेषु शस्त्रैश्चापि न रिष्यते। दिव्यो ध्वजवरो राजन्दृश्यते चेह मानुषैः
He does not cling to trees, nor is he harmed by weapons; that divine, foremost banner, O King, is visible here to men.
तमास्थाय रथं दिव्यं पर्जन्यसमनिः स्वनम्। निर्ययौ पुरुषव्याघ्रः पाण्डवाभ्यां सहाच्युतः
Mounting that divine chariot, resounding like thunderclouds, the tiger among men, Achyuta, set out together with the two Pandavas.
यं लेभे वासवाद्राजा वसुस्तस्माद्बृहद्रथः। बृहद्रथात्क्रमेणैव प्राप्तो बार्हद्रथो रथम्
That chariot which the king Vasus received from Vasava, from Brihadratha it passed in succession to the Barhadrathas.
स निर्याय महाबाहुः पुण्डरीकेक्षणस्ततः। गिरिव्रजाद्बहिस्तस्थौ समदेशे महायशाः
Then the mighty-armed, lotus-eyed one, having set out, stood outside Girivraja in a suitable place, famed in the world.
