They performed wrestling techniques such as the 'grass press,' the 'full union,' and the 'fist lock,' and many other such contests against each other.
Then, to witness their battle, the city dwellers gathered—Brahmins, merchants, and thousands of Kshatriyas.
Shudras, tiger-like men, women, and elders—all assembled there, and the place was densely crowded with throngs of people.
From their arm-blows, grappling and counter-grappling, there arose a tremendous impact, as if between a thunderbolt and a mountain.
Both were exceedingly exhilarated, foremost among the strong, each seeking an opening in the other, both desiring victory over their rival.
They were like rams butting with their heads, like night-stalkers with trees, like noble horses with their hooves, like partridges with their beaks.
Then, Bhima pushed the crowd aside, and the battle became tumultuous; O King, the contest of those strong men was like that of Vritra and Indra.
With pulling, dragging, counter-pulling, and twisting, they hauled each other about and struck with their knees.
Then, with a great noise, the two rebuked each other, striking with blows like the collision of rocks.
Thereupon, Jarasandha struck Bhima on the chest with his fist; Bhima, in turn, struck Jarasandha on the chest.
Both had broad chests, long arms, and were skilled in wrestling; they clashed with their arms like iron clubs.
That battle began on the first day of the month of Kartika, and continued for fifteen days, without food, day and night, and without rest.
On the thirteenth day, the struggle of those two great souls was still ongoing; but on the night of the fourteenth, the Magadhan king ceased from exhaustion.
Seeing the king thus wearied, Janardana spoke to Bhima, the doer of mighty deeds, as if to rouse him.
O son of Kunti, when the enemy is exhausted, he can be subdued in battle; for when pressed completely, he may abandon his very life.
Therefore, O son of Kunti, today you must press the king; fight him with all your strength, O bull among the Bharatas.
Thus addressed by Krishna, the Pandava, slayer of enemy heroes, perceiving Jarasandha's weakness, resolved to kill him.
Then Vrikodara, best of the strong, seized the unconquered Jarasandha in order to defeat him, filled with fury, O joy of the Kurus.
Then Bhimasena spoke to Krishna, the delight of the Yadus, having adopted a broad strategy for the slaying of Jarasandha.
This wicked man, Krishna, does not deserve to be shown any favor by me; for the most part, O tiger among the Yadus, he has destroyed his own kin.
Thus addressed, Krishna replied to Vrikodara, urging him on, eager for the slaying of Jarasandha.
Whatever supreme destiny, courage, and strength from the Wind-god you possess, O Bhima, show it now against Jarasandha.
This Jarasandha, of evil mind and great chariot-warrior, is destined to be slain by you; I heard this proclaimed in the sky when the wind blew.
On the best of mountains, Gomanta, he was once released; who else, after encountering Baladeva's strength, could survive among the Magadhas?
Therefore, his death is ordained at your hands alone, O mighty-armed one; remembering the Wind-god, slay this lord of Magadha.
Thus addressed, Bhima then, remembering the Wind-god in his mind, bowed to Janardana and embraced Phalguna.
Possessed by the force of the wind, the subduer of enemies lifted Jarasandha, the mighty one, and began to whirl him around.
Having whirled him a hundredfold, O bull among the Bharatas, he compressed and crushed his back with his knees, and roared aloud.
Seizing his foot with his hand, the mighty one split him in two; as he was being crushed and as the Pandava roared, a tumultuous sound arose.
A terrible noise arose, frightening all living beings; all the Magadhas were terrified, and the wombs of women miscarried.
