If she is pleased, O beautiful one, she will release us from this curse; therefore, we shall make the horse's tail black, without doubt.
Having so resolved, they stood there like black hairs of the tail; meanwhile, at that moment, the two co-wives made a wager.
Having made the wager, O best of twice-born, the two sisters departed with great joy to the far shore of the great ocean.
Kadrū and Vinatā, both daughters of Dakṣa, moving through the sky, gazed upon the unshakable ocean, the treasure of waters.
Violently agitated by the wind, making a great sound, filled with whales and giant fish, and also covered with makaras.
Teeming with countless and diverse creatures, dreadful, unassailable, deep, and exceedingly terrifying.
The source of all gems, the abode of Varuṇa, the dwelling of the Nāgas, delightful, the lord of rivers.
The abode of the fire of the netherworld, the home of the Asuras, the dwelling of fearsome beings, the inexhaustible treasure of waters.
Radiant, divine, the source of immortality for the immortals, supreme, immeasurable, inconceivable, and equal to the pure waters of heaven.
There, in many places, countless great rivers filled it exceedingly, their waves dancing as if in joy.
Thus, with its swiftly moving, surging waves, deep and wide, shining like the open sky, its body lit by flames from the netherworld, roaring, they quickly approached it.
Crossing that ocean together with Vinata, Kadru swiftly descended near the horse, as if in no time at all.
Then they saw that best of horses, of great speed, shining like the rays of the moon, with both its manes dark as time.
Seeing many black hairs at the root of its tail, Kadru, making Vinata despondent, bound her to servitude.
Thus, Vinata, defeated by that wager, became afflicted with sorrow and entered into the state of a servant.
Meanwhile, when the time had come, Garuda, of great splendor, was born from the egg, breaking it open, without his mother.
Endowed with immense strength and power, illuminating all directions, able to assume any form, to go anywhere, and to act at will, the bird was born.
Shining like a mass of blazing fire, exceedingly fearsome, with eyes bright as lightning, his radiance rivaled the fire at the end of an age.
Suddenly grown, the great-bodied bird soared into the sky, terrible, with a dreadful roar, fierce like another submarine fire.
Seeing him, all the gods sought refuge with Agni, and bowing, they addressed him, who sat there in universal form.
"O Agni, do not increase further; surely you do not wish to burn us? For that great mass, fully kindled, is rushing forth from you."
"It is not as you think, O destroyers of Asuras; this Garuda is powerful, equal to me in energy."
"Born with supreme brilliance, the joy of Vinata, seeing this mass of energy, confusion has overtaken you all."
"He, the destroyer of serpents, the mighty son of Kashyapa, is devoted to the welfare of the gods and the harm of Daityas and Rakshasas."
"There is no need for fear here; behold him together with me."
"You are a sage, you are greatly fortunate, you are a god, the lord of birds."
You are the lord, the illuminator, the Sun, the supreme creator, the progenitor; you are Indra, you are the lord of horses, you are Śarva, you are the master of the world.
You are the face of the lotus-born, the priest; you are Agni and also the wind; you are indeed the sustainer and the arranger, you are Viṣṇu, best among the gods.
You are the great, unconquered, eternal, immortal; you are great fame; you are radiance, you are the desired, you are our supreme protection.
All that is yet to come and all that has arrived.
