भ्रामयित्वा शतगुणमेकोनं येन भारत। गदा क्षिप्ता बलवता मागधेन गिरिव्रजात्
Having whirled his mace with a hundredfold force, the mighty Māgadha hurled it from Girivraja.
तिष्ठतो मथुरायां वै कुत्स्नस्याद्भुतकर्मणः। एकोनयोजनशते सा पपात गदा शुभा
As I stood in Mathurā, performer of wondrous deeds, that excellent mace fell at a distance of just under a hundred yojanas.
दृष्ट्वा पौरैस्तदा सम्यग्गदा चैव निवेदिता। गदावसानं तत्ख्यातं मथुरायाः समीपतः
Seeing this, the citizens reported the mace accurately; the place where the mace landed became known near Mathurā.
तस्यास्तां हंसडिभिकावशस्त्रनिधनावुभौ। मन्त्रे मतिमतां श्रेष्ठौ नीतिशास्त्रे विशारदौ
Both Haṃsa and Ḍibhika met their end by weapons; they were foremost among the wise in counsel and skilled in the science of polity.
यौ तौ मया ते कथितौ पूर्वमेव महाबलौ। त्रयस्त्रयाणां लोकानां पर्याप्ता इति मे मतिः
Those two of great might, whom I mentioned earlier, in my judgment were sufficient for the protection of the three worlds.
एवमेष तदा वीर बलिभिः कुकुरान्धकैः। वृष्णिभिश्च महाराज नीतिहेतोरुपेक्षितः
Thus, at that time, O great king, this hero was disregarded by the powerful Kukuras, Andhakas, and Vṛṣṇis for reasons of policy.
पतितौ हंसडिभिकौ कंसश्च सगणो हतः। जरासन्धस्य निधने कालोऽयं समुपागतः
Haṃsa and Ḍibhika have fallen, Kaṃsa and his followers have been slain; now the time for Jarāsandha's end has arrived.
न शक्योऽसौ रणे जेतुं सर्वैरपि सुरासुरैः। प्राणयुद्धेन जेतव्यः स इत्युपलभामहे
He cannot be conquered in battle by all the gods and demons together; we understand that he must be overcome in a fight for life itself.
मयि नीतिर्बलं भीमे रक्षिता चावयोर्जयः। मागधं साधयिष्याम इष्टिं त्रय इवाग्नयः
With my strategy, Bhīma's strength, and your protection, our victory is assured; we shall subdue the Māgadha, like three sacrificial fires.
त्रिभिरासादितोऽस्माभिर्विजने स नराधिपः। न सन्देहो यथा युद्धमेकेनाप्युपयास्यति
Approached by us three in seclusion, that lord of men will surely engage in single combat—there is no doubt.
अवमानाच्च लोभाच्च बाहुवीर्याच्च दर्पितः। भीमसेनेन युद्धाय ध्रुवमप्युपयास्यति
Driven by insult, greed, and the pride of his own strength, Bhimasena will surely come to battle.
अलं तस्य महाबाहुर्भीमसेनो महाबलः। लोकस्य समुदीर्णस्य निधनायान्तको यथा
That mighty-armed, powerful Bhimasena is enough for his destruction, like Death himself for the end of the world when it is in turmoil.
यदि भीमबलं वेत्सि यदि ते प्रत्ययो मयि। भीमसेनार्जुनौ शीघ्रं न्यासभूतौ प्रयच्छ मे
If you know Bhima’s strength, if you have confidence in me, quickly entrust Bhimasena and Arjuna to me as my charge.
एवमुक्तो भगवता प्रत्युवाच युधिष्ठिरः। भीमार्जुनौ समालोक्य सम्प्रहृष्टमुखौ स्थितौ
Thus addressed by the Blessed One, Yudhishthira replied, looking at Bhima and Arjuna, who stood with delighted faces.
अच्युताच्युत मामैवं व्याहरामित्रकर्शन। पाण्डवानां भवान्नाथो भवन्तं चाश्रिता वयम्
O Acyuta, do not speak to me in this way, O subduer of enemies; you are the protector of the Pandavas, and we have taken refuge in you.
यथा वदसि गोविन्द सर्वं तदुपपद्यते। नहि त्वमग्रतस्तेषां येषां लक्ष्मीः पराङ्मुखी
Whatever you say, Govinda, all that is fitting; for you are not at the forefront of those whom fortune has turned away.
येषामभिमुखी लक्ष्मीस्तेषां कृष्ण त्वमग्रतः'। निहतश्च जरासन्धो मोक्षिताश्च महीक्षितः। राजसूयश्च मे लब्धो निदेशे त्व तिष्ठतः
For those whom fortune faces, Krishna, you are at their head; Jarasandha has been slain, the kings have been freed, and I have obtained the Rajasuya, all while you stood by my side.
क्षिप्रमेव यथा त्वेतत्कार्यं समुपपद्यते। अप्रमत्तो जगन्नाथ तथा कुरु समुपपद्यते
Quickly, O Lord of the world, do as you see fit so that this task may be accomplished without delay, acting with full attention.
त्रिभिर्भवद्भिर्हि विना नाहं जीवितुमुत्सहे। धर्मकामार्थरहितो रोगार्त इव दुःखितः
Without you three, I cannot bear to live, deprived of righteousness, desire, and wealth, like a sick man suffering in pain.
न शौरिणा विना पार्थो न शौरिः पाण्डवं विना। नाजेयोस्त्यनयोऽर्लोके कृष्णयोरिति मे मतिः
Without Sauri, Partha is not; nor is Sauri without the Pandava; in this world, neither of the two Krishnas can be conquered—this is my conviction.
अयं च बलिनां श्रेष्ठः श्रीमानपि वृकोदरः। युवाभ्यां सहितो वीर किं न कुर्यान्महायशाः
And this Vrikodara, foremost of the strong and prosperous, together with you two heroes—what is there that the illustrious one could not accomplish?
सुप्रणीतो बलौघो हि कुरुते कार्यमुत्तमम्। अन्धं बलं जडं प्राहुः प्रणेतव्यं विचक्षणैः
A well-guided force indeed accomplishes the highest aim; but a blind or dull force, they say, must be directed by the wise.
यतो हि निम्नं भवति नयन्ति हि ततो जलम्। यतश्छिद्रं ततश्चापि नयन्ते धीवरा जलम्
For water flows where the ground slopes, and fishermen lead water where there is an opening.
तस्मान्नयविधानज्ञं पुरुषं लोकविश्रुतम्। वयमाश्रित्य गोविन्दं यतामः कार्यसिद्धये
Therefore, relying on Govinda, renowned among men and skilled in the science of policy, let us strive for the accomplishment of our task.
एवं प्रज्ञानयबलं क्रियोपायसमन्वितम्। पुरस्कृर्वीत कार्येषु कृष्णकार्यार्थसिद्धये
Thus, one endowed with wisdom, policy, strength, and practical means should be placed at the forefront of actions for the success of Krishna’s purpose.
एवमेव यदुश्रेष्ठ यावत्कार्याथिसिद्धये। अर्जुनः कृष्णमन्वेतु भीमोऽन्वेतु धनञ्जयम्। नयो जयो बलं चैव विक्रमे सिद्धिमेष्यति
Just so, O best of the Yadus, for the accomplishment of our purpose, let Arjuna follow Krishna, Bhima follow Dhananjaya; policy, victory, and strength will bring success through valor.
एवमुक्तास्ततः सर्वे भ्रातरो विपुलौजसः। वार्ष्णेयः पाण्डवेयौ च प्रतस्थुर्मागधं प्रति
Thus addressed, all the powerful brothers, the Vrishni and the Pandavas, set out toward Magadha.
वर्चस्विनां ब्राह्मणानां स्नातकानां परिच्छदैः। आच्छाद्य सुहृदां वाक्यैर्मनोज्ञैरभिनन्दिताः
Clad in the garments of radiant, learned Brahmanas who had completed their vows, they were honored with pleasing words by their friends.
माधवः पाण्डवेयौ च प्रतस्थुर्व्रतधारिणः'। अमर्षादभितप्तानां ज्ञात्यर्थं मुख्यतेजसाम्। रविसोमाग्निवपुषां दीप्तमासीत्तदा वपुः
Madhava and the sons of Pandu, steadfast in their vows, set forth; their forms, radiant like the sun, moon, and fire, shone brilliantly for the sake of their kinsmen, burning with indignation.
इतं मेने जरासन्धं दृष्ट्वा भीमपुरोगमौ। एककार्यसमुद्यन्तौ कृष्णौ युद्धेऽपराजितौ
Seeing Bhima at the forefront, with Krishna and his brother, both undefeated in battle and united in a single purpose, Jarasandha considered them thus.
