Thus, terrified, the Matsyas abandoned the northern direction and, with their feet withdrawn, took refuge in the southern quarter.
In the same way, all the Panchalas, stricken by fear of Jarasandha, completely abandoned their own kingdom and fled in every direction.
Indeed, the Panchalas, in the army of that great-souled one, stood at the front, before the forces of Magadha had departed from Girivraja with their full strength.
Kamsa, son of Ugrasena, once conquered his kinsmen, and, being of misguided intent, approached the two daughters of the son of Brihadratha.
Asti and Prasti were their names, the powerful younger sisters of Sahadeva; with that strength, the misguided one subdued his own relatives.
He attained supremacy, but then suffered a great downfall, being oppressed by the wicked elders among the Bhoja and Rajanya clans.
Desiring the protection of their kin, they sought our favor at that time, giving the slender-waisted daughter of Ahuka to Akrura.
For the sake of our kinsmen, I acted together with Sankarshana; Kamsa and his two sons were slain by me and also by Rama.
Having slain Kamsa at first, as Jarasandha trembled, I and Rama protected our kinsmen elsewhere as well.
But when the fear had passed and Jarasandha rose up again, O King, this counsel was taken among the eighteen assembled clans.
Even if we fought without ceasing, striking with mighty weapons and slaying enemies, we could not destroy his army in three hundred years.
For he had two warriors, Hamsa and Dibhika by name, equal to immortals in strength, foremost among the mighty, both doomed to die by weapons.
Those two heroes together, along with the powerful Jarasandha, were, in my judgment, sufficient to conquer the three worlds.
Indeed, not only we, but all the other kings as well, O best of the wise, held the same opinion.
I fought eighteen thrilling battles against him, O King, but Jarasandha of great might was not slain.
Then there was a certain great king named Hamsa, renowned by that name, who was slain there in battle by Rama during the eighteenth encounter.
When it was said that Hamsa had been slain, O Bharata, upon hearing this, Dibhika, the royal warrior, drowned himself in the waters of the Yamuna.
Thinking, 'Without Hamsa, I cannot bear to live in this world,' Dibhika, holding to this resolve, met his end.
Hearing thus the cry of the ḍibika bird, the swan, the conqueror of enemy cities, also entered the Yamunā and there submerged himself.
When the king Jarāsandha heard that both had met their end, he, with a desolate mind, departed for the city, O best of the Bharatas.
Then, O slayer of enemies, after that king had departed, all of us Andhakas again dwelt in Madhurā.
Whenever the lotus-eyed wife of Kaṃsa, the daughter of the Magadha king Jarāsandha, approached her father, O king, afflicted by the sorrow of her husband's death, she would urge him.
Again and again she would say, 'Slay my husband's killer!' Thus, O destroyer of foes, we, O great king, recalled that counsel previously deliberated.
Remembering that, our minds disturbed, we departed, O king of men, each separately, having abandoned great prosperity.
Out of fear of him, with sons, relatives, and kinsmen, we all considered and fled, taking refuge in the western direction.
We then made our settlement, O king, in the delightful city of Kuśasthalī, adorned by Raivata.
There we fortified it, making it impregnable even for the gods; even women could fight there—what then of the mighty Vṛṣṇi warriors?
There, O slayer of foes, we dwelt without fear, having considered that the great mountain and the Magadha king had been crossed.
The Mādhavas, O tiger among Kurus, attained supreme joy; thus we, though guilty before Jarāsandha, were safe.
Being powerful and connected by kinship, we took refuge in Gomanta—a mansion three yojanas long, with three ramparts, extending for a yojana.
