अभिभूय श्रियं तेषां कुलानामभिषेचितः। स्थितो मूर्ध्नि नरेन्द्राणामोजसाऽऽक्रम्य सर्वशः
Having subdued the wealth of those families, has been consecrated; he stands at the head of kings, having seized all by his might.
सोऽवनीं मध्यमां भुक्त्वा मिथो भेदममन्यत। प्रभुर्यस्तु परो राजा यस्मिन्नेकवशे जगत्
Having enjoyed the central earth, he considered causing division among them; but the supreme lord is that king in whose power the world is united.
स साम्राज्यं महाराज प्राप्तो भवति योगतः। तं स राजा जरासन्धं संश्रित्य किल सर्वशः
O King, he attained imperial sovereignty through alliance, relying entirely upon that king Jarasandha.
राजन्सेनापतिर्जातः शिशुपालः प्रतापवान्। तमेव च महाराज शिष्यवत्समुपस्थितः
Shishupala, powerful and illustrious, became the commander of his army, and approached him, O King, with the devotion of a disciple.
वक्रः करूषाधिपतिर्मायायोधी महाबलः।। अपरौ च महावीर्यौ महात्मानौ समाश्रितौ
Vakra, lord of Karusha, mighty in strength and skilled in magical warfare, along with two other great and noble heroes, took refuge with him.
जरासन्धं महावीर्यं तौ हिंसडिम्बिकावुभौ। वक्रदन्तः करूषस्य करभो मेघवाहनः। मूर्ध्ना दिव्यं मणिं बिभ्रद्यमद्भुतमणिं विदुः
Both Hamsa and Dimbhaka, of great valor, allied themselves with the mighty Jarasandha; Vakradanta of Karusha, Karabha, and Meghavahana are known for bearing a wondrous divine jewel upon their heads.
मरुं च नरकं चैव शास्ति यो यवनाधिपः। अपर्यन्तबलो राजा प्रतीच्यां वरुणो यथा
The king of the Yavanas, whose power is boundless like Varuna in the west, rules over Maru and Naraka.
भगदत्तो महाराज वृद्धस्तव पितुः सखा। स वाचा प्रणतस्तस्य कर्मणा च विशेषतः
Bhagadatta, O King, elderly and a friend of your father, honored him especially both in word and deed.
स्नेहबद्धश्च मनसा पितृवद्भक्तिमांस्त्वयि। प्रतीच्यां दक्षिणं चान्तं पृथिव्याः प्रति यो नृपः
Bound by affection in his heart, devoted to you as to a father, he is the king who rules the western and southern ends of the earth.
मातुलो भवतः शूरः पुरुजित्कुन्तिवर्धनः। स ते सन्नितिमानेकः स्नेहतः शत्रुसूदनः
Your valiant maternal uncle, Purujit Kuntivardhana, stands with you out of affection, O subduer of foes, with many allies.
जरासन्धं गतस्त्वेव पुरा यो न मया हतः। पुरुषोत्तमविज्ञातो योसौ चेदिषु दुर्मतिः
He who once went to Jarasandha and was not slain by me, that wicked-minded one among the Cedis, is known as Purushottama.
आत्मानं प्रतिजानाति लोकेऽस्मिन्पुरुषोत्तमम्। आदत्ते सततं मोहाद्यः स चिह्नं च मामकम्
He proclaims himself to be the supreme person in this world, and out of delusion, always takes my insignia as his own.
वङ्गपुण्ड्रकिरातेषु राजा बलसमन्वितः। पौण्ड्रको वासुदेवेति योसौ लोकेऽभिविश्रुतः
The king Paundraka, renowned in the world as 'Vasudeva,' powerful among the Vangas, Pundras, and Kiratas, is endowed with great might.
चतुर्थभाङ्महाराज भोज इन्द्रसखो बली। विद्याबलाद्यो व्यजयत्स पाण्ड्यक्रथकैशिकान्
The mighty Bhoja king, friend of Indra, who received a fourth share, conquered the Pandyas, Krathas, and Kaishikas by the power of knowledge and strength.
भ्राता तस्याकृतिः शूरो जामदग्न्यसमोऽभवत्। स भक्तो मागधं राजा भीष्मकः परवीरहा
His brother, valiant and resembling Jamadagni's son, is the devoted king Bhishmaka of Magadha, destroyer of enemy heroes.
प्रियाण्याचरतः प्रह्वान्सदा सम्बन्धिनस्ततः। भजतो न भजत्यस्मानप्रियेषु व्यवस्थितः
Always humble in performing acts dear to his kin, he does not honor those who do not honor us, remaining steadfast among those he loves.
न कुलं सबलं राजन्नभ्यजानात्तथाऽऽत्मनः। पश्यमानो यशो दीप्तं जरासन्धमुपस्थितः
O King, seeing Jarasandha's blazing fame, he did not recognize his own powerful lineage, but joined him instead.
उदीच्याश्च तथा भोजाः कुलान्यष्टादश प्रभो। जरासन्धभयादेव प्रतीचीं दिशमास्थिताः
Likewise, O Lord, the eighteen clans of the northern Bhojas, out of fear of Jarasandha, took refuge in the western direction.
शूरसेना भद्रकारा बोधाः शाल्वाः पटच्चराः। सुस्थलाश्च सुकुट्टाश्च कुलिन्दाः कुन्तिभिः सह
The Shurasenas, Bhadrakaras, Bodhas, Shalvas, Pataccaras, Suthalas, Sukuṭṭas, Kulindas, together with the Kuntis,
शाल्वायनाश्च राजानः सोदर्यानुचरैः सह। दक्षिणा ये च पञ्चालाः पूर्वाः कुन्तिषु कोसलाः
And the Shalvayana kings with their brothers and followers, and the southern Panchalas, as well as the eastern Kosalas among the Kuntis,
तथोत्तरां दिशं चापि परित्यज्य भयार्दिताः। मत्स्याः सन्न्यस्तपादाश्च दक्षिणां दिशमाश्रिताः
Thus, terrified, the Matsyas abandoned the northern direction and, with their feet withdrawn, took refuge in the southern quarter.
तथैव सर्वपञ्चाला जरासन्धभायर्दिताः। स्वराज्यं सम्परित्यज्य विद्रुताः सर्वतोदिशम्
In the same way, all the Panchalas, stricken by fear of Jarasandha, completely abandoned their own kingdom and fled in every direction.
अग्रतो ह्यस्य पाञ्चालास्तत्रानीके महात्मनः। अनिर्गते सारबले मागधेभ्यो गिरिव्रजात्
Indeed, the Panchalas, in the army of that great-souled one, stood at the front, before the forces of Magadha had departed from Girivraja with their full strength.
उग्रसेनसुतः कंसः पुरा निर्जित्य बान्धवान्'। बार्हद्रथसुते देव्यावुपागच्छद्वृथामतिः
Kamsa, son of Ugrasena, once conquered his kinsmen, and, being of misguided intent, approached the two daughters of the son of Brihadratha.
अस्तिः प्रास्तिश्च नाम्ना ते सहदेवानुजेऽबले। बलेन तेन स्वज्ञातीनभिभूय वृथामतिः
Asti and Prasti were their names, the powerful younger sisters of Sahadeva; with that strength, the misguided one subdued his own relatives.
श्रैष्ठ्यं प्राप्तः स तस्यासीदतीवापनयो महान्। भोजराजन्यवृद्धैश्च पीड्यमानैर्दुरात्मना
He attained supremacy, but then suffered a great downfall, being oppressed by the wicked elders among the Bhoja and Rajanya clans.
ज्ञातित्राणमभीप्सद्भिरस्मत्सम्भावना कृता। दत्वाऽऽक्रूराय सुतनुं तामाहुकसुतां तदा
Desiring the protection of their kin, they sought our favor at that time, giving the slender-waisted daughter of Ahuka to Akrura.
सङ्कर्षणद्वितीयेन ज्ञातिकार्यं मया कृतम्। हतौ कंससुनामानौ मया रामेण चाप्युत
For the sake of our kinsmen, I acted together with Sankarshana; Kamsa and his two sons were slain by me and also by Rama.
हत्वा कंसं तथैवादौ जरासन्धस्य बिभ्यतः। मया रामेण चान्यत्र ज्ञातयः परिपालितः
Having slain Kamsa at first, as Jarasandha trembled, I and Rama protected our kinsmen elsewhere as well.
भये तु समतिक्रान्ते जरासन्धे समुद्यते। मन्त्रोऽयं मन्त्रितो राजन्कुलैरष्टादशावरैः
But when the fear had passed and Jarasandha rose up again, O King, this counsel was taken among the eighteen assembled clans.
