ब्रह्मव्रतमुपास्स्व त्वं प्रयतेनान्तरात्मना। ततोऽहं हिमवत्पृष्ठे समारब्दो महाव्रतम्
Undertake the vow of Brahman, with inner purity and devotion; then I began a great vow on the slopes of the Himalaya.
ततः स भगवान्सूर्यो मामुपादाय वीर्यवान्। आगच्छत्तां सभां ब्राह्मीं विपाप्मा विगतक्लमः ?
Then that glorious Sun, full of power, took me up and brought me to that assembly of Brahman, free from sin and fatigue.
एवंरूपेति सा शक्या न निर्देष्टुं नराधिप। क्षणेन हि बिभर्त्यन्यदनिर्देश्यं वपुस्तथा
Such is her form, O king, that she cannot be described; for in a moment she assumes another, equally indescribable body.
न वेद परिमाणं वा संस्थानं चापि भारत। न च रूपं मया तादृक् दृष्टपूर्वं कदाचन
Neither her measure nor her shape is known, O Bhārata; nor have I ever before seen such a form as hers.
सुसुखा सा सदा राजन्न शीता न च घर्मदा। न क्षुत्पिपासे न ग्लानिं प्राप्यतां प्राप्तुवन्त्युत
She is ever delightful, O king, neither cold nor causing heat; there is no hunger, thirst, or fatigue to be found there.
नानारूपैरिव कृता मणिभिः सा सुभास्वरैः। स्तम्भैर्न च धृता सा तु शाश्वती न च सा क्षरा
She seems made of many forms, like gems of splendid brilliance; she is not supported by pillars, she is eternal and does not decay.
दिव्यैर्नानाविधैर्भावैर्भासद्भिरमितप्रभैः
With divine and manifold forms, shining with boundless radiance,
अति चन्द्रं च सूर्यं च शिखिनं च स्वयम्प्रभा। दीप्यते नाकपृष्ठस्था भर्त्सयन्वीव भास्करम्
She outshines the moon, the sun, and fire by her own light; she blazes on the summit of heaven, as if rebuking the sun.
तस्यां स भगवानास्ते विदधद्देवमायया। स्वयमेकोऽनिशं राजन्सर्वलोकपितामहः
There, the Blessed Lord abides, performing his divine magic; he alone, unceasingly, O king, is the grandsire of all worlds.
उपतिष्ठन्ति चाप्येनं प्रजानां पतयः प्रभुम्। दक्षः प्रचेताः पुलहो मरीचिः कश्यपः प्रभुः
And to him approach the lords of beings, as their master: Daksha, Prachetas, Pulaha, Marichi, and the mighty Kasyapa.
भृगुरत्रिर्वसिष्ठश्च गौतमोऽथ तथाङ्गिराः। पुलस्त्यश्च कतुश्चैव प्रह्लादः कर्दमस्तथा
Bhrigu, Atri, Vasistha, Gautama, and also Angiras; Pulastya, Kratu, Prahlada, and likewise Kardama.
अथर्वाङ्गिरसश्चैव वालखिल्या सरीचिपाः। मनोऽन्तरिक्षं विद्याश्च वायुस्तेजो जलं मही
Atharvan and Angiras as well, the Valakhilyas and the Saricipas; Mind, Space, Knowledge, Wind, Light, Water, and Earth.
शब्दस्पर्शौ तथा रूपं रसो गन्धश्च भारत। प्रकृतिश्च विकारश्च यच्चान्यत्कारणं भुवः
Sound and touch, form, taste, and smell, O Bhārata; nature and transformation, and whatever else is the cause of the world.
अगस्त्यश्च महातेजा मार्कण्डेयश्च वीर्यवान्। जमदग्निर्भरद्वाजः संवर्तश्च्यवनस्तथा
Agastya, of great splendor, Markandeya, full of might; Jamadagni, Bharadvaja, Samvarta, and also Cyavana.
दुर्वासाश्च महाभाग ऋष्णशृङ्गश्च धार्मिकः। सनत्कुमारो भगवान्योगाचार्यो महातपाः
Durvasa, greatly blessed, Rishyasringa, righteous; the venerable Sanatkumara, master of yoga, great in austerity.
असितो देवलश्चैव जैगीषव्यश्च तत्त्ववित्। ऋषभो जितशत्रुश्च महावीर्यस्तथा मणिः
Asita and Devala, and Jaigishavya, knower of truth; Rishabha, Jitashatru, mighty in valor, and likewise Mani.
आयुर्वेदस्तथाऽष्टाङ्गो देहवांस्तत्र भारत। चन्द्रमाः सह नक्षत्रैरादित्यश्च गभस्तिमान्
Ayurveda, with its eight branches, embodied there, O Bhārata; the Moon with the stars, and the radiant Sun.
वायवः क्रतवश्चैव सङ्कल्पः प्राण एव च। मूर्तिमन्तो महात्मानो महाव्रतपरायणाः
The winds, the sacrifices, resolve, and indeed life-breath itself; all embodied, great-souled, devoted to great vows.
एते चान्ये च बहवो ब्रह्माणं समुपस्थिताः। अर्थो धर्मश्च कामश्च हर्षो द्वेषस्तपो दमः
These and many others have come before Brahmā: wealth, righteousness, desire, joy, aversion, austerity, and self-restraint.
आयान्ति तस्यां सहिता गन्धर्वाप्सरसां गणाः। विंशतिः सप्त चैवान्ये लोकपालाश्च सर्वशः
There also arrive, together in that place, hosts of Gandharvas and Apsarases, twenty-seven others, and all the guardians of the worlds.
शुक्रो बृहस्पतिश्चैव बुधोऽङ्कारक एव च। शनैश्चरश्च राहुश्च ग्रहाः सर्वे तथैव च
Śukra, Bṛhaspati, Budha, Aṅkāraka, Śanaiścara, Rāhu, and all the planets likewise.
मन्त्रो रथन्तरं चैव हरिमान्वसुमानपि। आदित्याः साधिराजानो नामद्वन्द्वैरुदाहृताः
The Mantra, the Rathantara, Hariman, Vasuman, the Ādityas, and the royal sages, all named in pairs.
मरुतो विश्वकर्मा च वसवश्चैव भारत। तथा पितृगणाः सर्वे सर्वाणि च हवींष्यथ
The Maruts, Viśvakarman, the Vasus, O Bhārata, and all the hosts of ancestors, and all the offerings as well.
ऋग्वेदः सामवेदश्च यजुर्वेदश्च पाण्डव। अथर्ववेदश्च तथा सर्वशास्त्राणि चैव ह
The Ṛgveda, the Sāmaveda, the Yajurveda, O Pāṇḍava, and likewise the Atharvaveda, and indeed all the sciences.
इतिहासोपवेदाश्च वेदाङ्गानि च सर्वशः। ग्रहा यज्ञाश्च सोमश्च देवताश्चापि सर्वशः
The Itihāsas, the Upavedas, all the Vedāṅgas, the planets, the sacrifices, Soma, and all the deities as well.
सावित्री दुर्गतरणी वाणी सप्तविधा तथा। मेधा धृतिः श्रुतिश्चैव प्रज्ञा बुद्धिर्यशः क्षमा
Sāvitrī, the crosser of difficulties, Vāṇī in her seven forms, intelligence, fortitude, hearing, discernment, wisdom, fame, and forbearance.
सामानि स्तुतिशस्त्राणि गाथाश्च विविधास्तथा। भाष्याणि तर्कयुक्तानि देहवन्ति विशाम्पते
The Sāman hymns, songs of praise, various ballads, commentaries with reasoning, all endowed with form, O lord of men.
नाटका विविधाः काव्याः कथाख्यायिकारिकाः । तत्रतिष्ठन्ति ते पुण्या ये चान्ये गुरुपूजकाः
Various dramas, poems, stories, and narrative tales—there stand those virtuous ones, and others who honor their teachers.
क्षणा लवा मुहूर्ताश्च दिवा रात्रिस्तथैव च। अर्धमासाश्च मासाश्च ऋतवः षट् च भारत
Moments, instants, auspicious times, day and night as well, fortnights, months, and the six seasons, O Bhārata.
संवत्सराः पञ्ययुगमहोरात्रश्चतुर्विधः। कालचक्रं च तद्दिव्यं नित्यमक्षयमव्ययम्
Years, the five ages, the fourfold day and night, and that divine wheel of time, eternal, imperishable, and undecaying.
