पलाशानां शतं ज्ञेयं शतं काशकुशादयः। शान्तनुश्चैव राजेन्द्र पाण्डुश्चैव पिता तव
A hundred Palāśas, a hundred Kāśakuśas and others, and also Śāntanu, O king, and your father Pāṇḍu.
उशङ्गवः शतरथो देवराजो जयद्रथः। वृषदर्भश्च राजर्षिर्बुद्धिमान्सहमन्त्रिभिः
Uśaṅgava, Śataratha, Devarāja, Jayadratha, and the royal sage Vṛṣadarbha, wise and with his ministers.
अथापरे सहस्राणि ये गताः शसबिन्दवः। इष्ट्वाऽश्वमेधैर्बहुभिर्महद्भिर्भूरिदक्षिणैः
And then, other thousands who were Śaśabindus, having performed many great aśvamedha sacrifices with abundant gifts.
एते राजर्षयः पुण्याः कीर्तिमन्तो बहुश्रुताः। तस्यां सभायां राजेन्द्र वैवस्वतमुपासते
These are the virtuous royal sages, famed and learned, who in that assembly, O king, worship Vaivasvata.
अगस्त्योऽथ मतङ्गश्च कालो मृत्युस्तथैव च। यज्वानश्चैव सिद्धाश्च ये न योगशरीरिणः
Agastya, Mataṅga, Kāla, Mṛtyu, and also sacrificers and perfected beings who do not possess yogic bodies.
अग्निष्वात्ताश्च पितरः फेनपाश्वोष्मपाश्च ये। सुधावन्तो बर्हिषदो मूर्तिमन्तस्तथाऽपरे
The Agniṣvātta Pitṛs, Phenapaśvas, Uṣmapās, those who drink nectar, Barhiṣads, and others with form.
कालचक्रं च साक्षाच्च भगवान्हव्यवाहनः। नरा दुष्कृतकर्माणो दक्षिणायनमृत्यवः
The Wheel of Time itself, the blessed Havyavāhana, men of evil deeds, and those who die in the southern course.
कालस्य नयने युक्ता यमस्य पुरुपाश्च ये। तस्यां शिंशुपपालाशास्तथा काशकुशादयः
Those engaged in the guidance of Time, the many noose-bearers of Yama, and in that assembly, Śiṃśupa, Palāśa, Kāśakuśa, and others.
उपासते धर्मराजं मूर्तिमन्तो जनाधिप। एते चान्ये च बहवः पितृराजसभासदः। न शक्याः परिसङ्ख्यातुं नामभिः कर्मभिस्तथा
They worship King Dharma in person, rulers of men; these and many others are attendants in the assembly of the lord of the ancestors, who cannot be counted by name or deed.
असम्बाधा हि सा पार्थ रम्या कामगमा सभा। दीर्घकालं तपस्तप्त्वा निर्मिता विश्वकर्मणा
For that assembly, O Pārtha, is spacious, delightful, and fulfills all desires, created by Viśvakarman after long austerities.
ज्वलन्ती भासमाना च तेजसा स्वेन भारत। तामुग्रतपसो यान्ति सुव्रताः सत्यवादिनः
Radiant and shining with their own brilliance, O Bharata, those of fierce austerity, steadfast in vows and truthful in speech, approach her.
शान्ताः सन्यासिनः शुद्धाः पूताः पुण्येन कर्मणा। सर्वे भास्वरदेहाश्च सर्वे च विरजोम्बराः
Peaceful, renunciants, pure, sanctified by virtuous deeds—all possess luminous bodies and spotless garments.
चित्राङ्गदाश्चित्रमाल्याः सर्वे ज्वलितकुण्डलाः। सुकृतैः कर्मभिः पुण्यैः पारिबर्हैश्च भूषिताः
Adorned with varied garlands, all with blazing earrings, they are decorated by their meritorious and virtuous actions, as well as by splendid ornaments.
गन्धर्वाश्च महात्मानः सङ्घशश्चाप्सरोगणाः। वादित्रं नृत्तगीतं च हास्यं लास्यं च सर्वशः
The great-souled Gandharvas and groups of Apsaras are there; music, dance, song, laughter, and all forms of performance abound.
पुण्याश्च गन्धाः शब्दाश्च तस्यां पार्थ समन्ततः। दिव्यानि चैव माल्यानि उपतिष्ठन्ति नित्यशः
O Partha, everywhere in that place are auspicious fragrances and sounds; divine garlands are ever present.
शतं शतसहस्राणि धर्मिणां तं प्रजेश्वरम्। उपासते महात्मानं रूपयुक्ता मनस्विनः
Hundreds and thousands of righteous ones, endowed with form and mind, worship that great-souled lord of beings.
ईदृशी सा सभा राजन्पितृराज्ञो महात्मनः। वरुणस्यापि वक्ष्यामि सभां पुष्करमालिनीम्
Such is the assembly, O King, of the great-souled lord of the ancestors; I will now describe the lotus-garlanded assembly of Varuna.
युधिष्ठिर सभा दिव्या वरुणस्यामितप्रभा। प्रमाणेन यथा याम्या शुभप्राकारतोरणा
Yudhishthira, the divine assembly of Varuna, of boundless radiance, is equal in size to that of Yama, with splendid walls and gateways.
अन्तः सलिलमास्थाय विहिता विश्वकर्मणा। दिव्यै रत्नमयैर्वृक्षैः फलपुष्पप्रदैर्युता
Established within the waters, fashioned by Vishvakarma, it is adorned with divine, jewel-encrusted trees bearing fruits and flowers.
नीलपीतैः सिताः श्यामैः सितैर्लोहितकैरपि। अवतानैस्तथा गुल्मैर्मञ्जरीजालधारिभिः
Blue and yellow, white and dark, white and red, as well as drooping shrubs with clusters of blossoms.
तथा शकुनयस्तस्यां विचित्रा मधुरस्वराः। अनिर्देश्या वपुष्मन्तः शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः
There, too, are birds of many kinds with sweet voices, possessing indescribable forms, in their hundreds and thousands.
सा सभा सुखसंस्पर्शा न शीता न च धर्मदा। वेश्मासनवती रम्या सिता वरुणपालिता
That assembly is pleasant to the touch, neither cold nor hot; furnished with dwellings and seats, delightful and bright, guarded by Varuna.
यस्यामास्ते स वरुणो वारुण्या च समन्वितः। दिव्यरत्नाम्बरधरो दिव्याभरणभूषितः
Within it sits Varuna, accompanied by Varuni, adorned in divine jewels and garments, embellished with celestial ornaments.
?द्वितीयेन तु नाम्ना वै गौरीति भुवि विश्रुता। पत्न्या सवरुणो देवः प्रमोदति सुखी सुखम्
With his second wife, famed on earth as Gauri by name, the god Varuna rejoices happily.
स्रग्विणो दिव्यगन्धाश्च दिव्यगन्धानुलेपनाः। आदित्यास्तत्र वरुणं जलेश्वरमुपासते
Wearing garlands and divine fragrances, anointed with celestial scents, the Adityas worship Varuna, lord of the waters, there.
वासुकिस्तक्षकश्चैव नागश्चैरावतस्तथा। कृष्णश्च लोहितश्चैव पद्मश्चित्रश्च वीर्यवान्
Vasuki, Takshaka, and the serpent Airavata, Krishna, Lohita, Padma, and the mighty Chitra are present.
कम्बलाश्वतरौ नागौ धृतराष्ट्रबलाहकौ। मणिमान्कुण्डधारश्च कर्कोटकधनञ्जयौ
Kambala and Ashvatara, the serpents Dhritarashtra and Balahaka, Maniman, Kundadhara, Karkotaka, and Dhananjaya.
पाणिमान्कुण्डधारश्च बलवान्पृथिवीपते। प्रह्रादो मुषिकादश्च तथैव जनमेजयः
Paniman and Kundadhara, O lord of the earth, the powerful Prahrada, Mushikada, and likewise Janamejaya.
पताकिनो मण्डलिनः फणवन्तश्च सर्वशः। ` अर्थो धर्मश्च कामश्च वसुः कपिल एव च
All around were those bearing banners, arranged in circles, adorned with hoods; and there too were Artha, Dharma, Kāma, Vasu, and Kapila.
अनन्तश्च महानागो यं दृष्ट्वा जलजेश्वरः। अभ्यर्चयति सत्कारैरासनेन च तं विभुः
And there was Ananta, the great serpent, whom, when seen, the lord of the waters worships with honors and a seat, that mighty one.
