पर्वतश्च महाभागो मार्कण्डेयो महामुनिः। पवित्रपाणिः सावर्णो भालुकिर्गालवस्तथा
Parvata, the greatly fortunate, Markandeya the great sage, Pavitrapani, Savarni, Bhaluki, and Galava were also there.
जङ्घाबन्धुश्च रैभ्यश्च कोपवेगस्तथा भृगुः। हरिबभ्रुश्च कौण्डिन्यो बभ्रुमाली सनातनः
Janghabandhu, Raibhya, Bhṛgu of fierce wrath, Haribabhru, Kaundinya, and Babhrumali the eternal were present.
काक्षीवानौशिजश्चैव नाचिकेतोऽथ गौतमः। पैङ्ग्यो वराहः शुनकः शाण्डिल्यश्च महातपाः
Kakshivan, Aushija, Nachiketas, Gautama, Paingi, Varaha, Shunaka, and Shandilya of great austerity were there.
कुक्कुरो वेणुजङ्घोऽथ कालापः कठ एव च। मुनयो धर्मविद्वांसो धृतात्मानो जितेन्द्रियाः
Kukkura, Venujangha, Kalapa, and Katha were also present—sages learned in righteousness, self-controlled, and masters of their senses.
एते चान्ये च बहवो वेदवेदाङ्गपारगाः। उपासते महात्मानं सभायामृषिसत्तमाः
These and many other foremost sages, accomplished in the Vedas and their branches, attended upon the great-souled one in the assembly.
कथयन्तः कथाः पुण्या धर्मज्ञाः शुचयोऽमलाः। तथैव क्षत्रियश्रेष्ठा धर्मराजमुपासते
Speaking auspicious tales, pure and righteous, those knowers of Dharma, spotless in conduct, and likewise the foremost of warriors, attended upon the king of righteousness.
श्रीमान्महात्मा धर्मात्मा मुञ्जकेतुर्विवर्धनः। सङ्ग्रामजिद्दुर्मुखश्च उग्रसेनश्च वीर्यवान्
The illustrious, great-souled, righteous, and ever-increasing Munjaketu, Sangramajit, Durmukha, and the mighty Ugrasena were present.
कक्षसेनः क्षितिपतिः क्षेमकश्चापराजितः। कम्बोजराजः कमठः कम्पनश्च महाबलः
Kakshasena, the lord of the earth, Kṣemaka the unconquered, the king of the Kambojas, Kamatha, and the mighty Kampana were there.
सततं कम्पयामास यवनानेक एव यः। बलपौरुषसम्पन्नान्कृतास्त्रानमितौजसः। यथाऽसुरान्कालकेयान्देवो वज्रधरस्तथा
He continually shook the mighty Yavanas, who were endowed with strength, valor, and mastery of weapons, just as the god wielder of the thunderbolt struck down the Kālakeya Asuras.
जटासुरो मद्रकानां च राजा कुन्तिः पुलिन्दश्च किरातराजः। तथाङ्गवाङ्गौ सहपुण्ड्रकेण पाण्ड्योड्रराजौ च सहान्ध्रकेण
Jaṭāsura, king of the Madrakas, Kunti, and Pulinda, the king of the Kirātas, as well as the kings of Aṅga and Vaṅga with Puṇḍra, and the kings of Pāṇḍya and Uḍra together with the king of Andhra—
अङ्गो वङ्गः सुमित्रश्च शैब्यश्चामित्रकर्शनः। किरातराजः सुमना यवनाधिपतिस्तथा
Aṅga, Vaṅga, Sumitra, the mighty Śaibya, the king of the Kirātas, Sumanā, and likewise the lord of the Yavanas—
चाणूरो देवरातश्च भोजो भीमरथश्च यः। श्रुतायुधश्च कालिङ्गो जयसेनश्च मागधः
Cāṇūra, Devarāta, Bhoja, and Bhīmaratha, Śrutāyudha the Kaliṅga, and Jayasena the king of Magadha—
सुकर्मा चेकितानश्च पुरुश्चामित्रकर्शनः। केतुमान्वसुदानश्च वैदेहोऽथ कृतक्षणः
Sukarmā, Cekitāna, Puru, Ketumān, Vasudāna, the king of Videha, and Kṛtakṣaṇa—
सुधर्मा चानिरुद्धश्च श्रुतायुश्च महाबलः। अनूपराजो दुर्धर्पः क्रमजिच्च सुदर्शनः
Sudharmā, Aniruddha, the mighty Śrutāyu, Anūparāja, Durdharpa, Kramajit, and Sudarśana—
शिशुपालः सहसुतः करूपाधिपतिस्तथा। वृष्णीनां चैव दुर्धर्पाः कुमारा देवरूपिणः
Śiśupāla, Sahasuta, the lord of Karūpa, and the proud princes of the Vṛṣṇis, who were of godlike form—
आहुको विपृथुश्चैव गदः सारण एव च। अक्रूरः कृतवर्मा च सत्यकश्च शिनेः सुतः
Āhuka, Vipṛthu, Gada, Sāraṇa, Akrūra, Kṛtavarmā, and Satyaka, son of Śini—
भीष्मकोऽथाकृतिश्चैव द्युमत्सेनश्च वीर्यवान्। केकयाश्च महेष्वासा यज्ञसेनश्च सोमकिः
Bhīṣmaka, Ākṛti, the valiant Dyumatsena, the great archers of the Kekayas, Yajñasena, and Somaki—
केतुमान्वसुमांश्चैव कृतास्त्रश्च महाबलः। एते चान्ये च बहवः क्षत्रिया मुख्यसंमताः
Ketumān, Vasumān, the mighty Kṛtāstra, and many other principal Kṣatriyas held in high esteem—
उपासते सभायां स्म कुन्तीपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम्। अर्जुनं ये व संश्रित्य राजपुत्रा महाबलाः
All these, along with other powerful royal princes who relied upon Arjuna, attended upon Yudhiṣṭhira, son of Kuntī, in the assembly.
अशिक्षन्त धनुर्वेदं रौरवाजिनवाससः। तत्रैव शिक्षिता राजन्कुमारा वृष्णिनन्दनाः
Wearing garments of ruru-deer skin, they learned the science of archery there; and there, O King, the sons of the Vṛṣṇis were also trained.
रौक्मिणेयश्च साम्बश्च युयुधानश्च सात्यकिः। सुधर्मा चानिरुद्धश्च शैव्यश्च नरपुङ्गवः
Raukmiṇeya, Sāmba, Yuyudhāna Sātyaki, Sudharmā, Aniruddha, and Śaivya, the foremost among men—
एते चान्ये च बहवो राजानः पृथिवीपते। धनञ्जयसखा चात्र नित्यमास्ते स्म तुम्बुरुः
These and many other kings, O lord of the earth, and Tumburu, the constant companion of Dhanañjaya, were present there.
उपासते महात्मानमासीनं सप्तविंशतिः। चित्रसेनः सहामात्यो गन्धर्वाप्सरसस्तथा
Twenty-seven, including Citraseṇa with his ministers, as well as Gandharvas and Apsarases, attended upon the great-souled one as he sat.
गीतवादित्रकुशलाः साम्यतालविशारदाः। प्रमाणोऽथ लये स्थाने किन्नराः कृतनिश्रमाः
The Kinnaras, skilled in singing and instrumental music, expert in rhythm and tempo, and accomplished in measure and beat, performed there.
सञ्चोदितास्तुम्बुरुणा गन्धर्वसहितास्तदा। गायन्ति दिव्यतानैस्ते यथान्यायं मनस्विनः
Urged on by Tumburu, the Gandharvas, together with their companions, sang with divine melodies as was proper, their minds intent.
पाण्डुपुत्रानृषींश्चैव रमयन्त उपासते। तस्यां सभायामासीनाः सुव्रताः सत्यसङ्गराः
They delighted the sons of Pāṇḍu and the sages, attending upon them; in that assembly sat those of virtuous vows and steadfast in truth.
दिवीव देवा ब्रह्माणं युधिष्ठिरमुपासते
Just as the gods in heaven honor Brahmā, so do they honor Yudhishthira.
सम्पूज्याथाभ्यनुज्ञातो महर्षेर्वचनात्परम्। प्रत्युवाचानुपूर्व्येण धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः
Having been duly honored and permitted by the great sage, King Yudhishthira responded in proper order.
भगवत्याय्यमाहैतं यथावद्धर्मनिश्चयम्। यथाशक्ति यथान्यायं क्रियतेऽयं विधिर्मया
O venerable one, as you have declared, this rule of righteousness is carried out by me as best as I am able and according to justice.
राजभिर्यद्यथा कार्यं, पुरा वै तन्न संशयः। यथान्यायोपनीतार्थं कृतं हेतुमदर्थवत्
Whatever was done by kings of old, there is no doubt about that; what has been accomplished is proper, meaningful, and based on reason, having been brought forth according to justice.
