उषित्वा खाण्डवप्रस्थे सुखवासं जनार्दनः। पार्थैः प्रीतिसमायुक्तैः पूजनार्होऽभिपूजितः
Having dwelt comfortably at Khāṇḍava-prastha, Janārdana, honored by the Pāṇḍavas who were united in affection, was worshipped as he deserved.
गमनाय मतिं चक्रे पितुर्दर्शनलालसः। धर्मराजमथामन्त्र्य पृथां च पृथुलोचनः
Desiring to see his father, he resolved to depart; the broad-eyed one, after consulting with Dharmarāja and Pṛthā.
ववन्दे चरणौ मूर्ध्ना जगद्वन्द्यः पितृष्वसुः। स तया मूर्ध्न्युपाघ्रातः परिष्वक्तश्च केशवः
He, revered by the world, bowed his head to the feet of his paternal aunt; Keśava was embraced and his head was smelled by her.
ददर्शानन्तरं कृष्णो भगिनीं स्वां महायशाः। तामुपेत्य हृषीकेशः प्रीत्या बाष्पसमन्वितः
Immediately after, Kṛṣṇa, renowned, saw his own sister; Hṛṣīkeśa approached her, filled with affection and tears.
अर्थ्यं तथ्यं हितं वाक्यं लघु युक्तमनुत्तरम्। उवाच भगवान्भद्रां सुभद्रां भद्रभाषिणीम्
The Blessed One spoke to Bhadrā, Subhadrā, who spoke auspiciously, words that were appropriate, true, beneficial, concise, fitting, and unsurpassed.
तया स्वजनगामीनि श्रावितो वचनानि सः। सम्पूजितश्चाप्यसकृच्छिरसा चाभिवादितः
By her, he was made to hear words directed to his own kin; he was repeatedly honored and respectfully greeted with bowed head.
तामनुज्ञाय वार्ष्णेयः प्रतिनन्द्य च भामिनीम्। ददर्शानन्तरं कृष्णां धौम्यं चापि जनार्दनः
Having taken leave of her and greeted the radiant one, Vārṣṇeya then saw Kṛṣṇā and also Dhaumya, Janārdana.
ववन्दे च यथान्यायं धौम्यं पुरुषसत्तमः। द्रौपदीं सान्त्वयित्वा च सुभद्रां परिदाय च
The best among men duly bowed to Dhaumya; after consoling Draupadī and bidding farewell to Subhadrā.
भ्रातृनभ्यगमद्विद्वान्पार्थेन सहितो बली। भ्रातृभिः पञ्चभिः कृष्णो वृतः शक्र इवामरैः
The wise one, accompanied by Arjuna, approached his brothers; Kṛṣṇa, surrounded by the five brothers, was like Indra among the immortals.
यात्राकालस्य योग्यानि कर्माणि गरुडध्वजः। कर्तुकामः शुचिर्भूत्वा स्नातवान्समलङ्कृतः
Desiring to perform the proper rites for departure, the bearer of the Garuḍa banner, purified himself, bathed, and adorned himself.
अर्चयामास देवांश्च द्विजांश्च यदुपुङ्गवः। माल्यजाप्यनमस्कारैर्गन्धैरुच्चावचैरपि
The foremost of the Yadus worshipped the gods and the twice-born with garlands, prayers, salutations, and fragrant substances, both high and low.
स कृत्वा सर्वकार्याणि प्रतस्थे तस्थुपां वरः। उपेत्य स यदुश्रेष्ठो बाह्यकक्षाद्विनिर्गतः
Having completed all duties, the best among those who stand set out; the chief of the Yadus, leaving the outer enclosure, approached.
स्वस्ति वाच्यार्हतो विप्रान्दधिपात्रफलाक्षतैः। वसु प्रदाय च ततः प्रदक्षिणमथाकरोत्
He had the worthy Brāhmaṇas pronounce blessings, giving them vessels, fruits, and rice grains; then, after giving wealth, he circumambulated.
काञ्चनं रथमास्थाय तार्क्ष्यकेतनमाशुगम्। गदाचक्रासिशार्ङ्गाद्यैरायुधैरावृतं शुभम्
He mounted a golden chariot, swift as the banner of Tārkṣya, adorned with mace, discus, sword, bow, and other auspicious weapons.
सुतिथावथ नक्षत्रे मुहूर्ते च गुणान्विते। प्रययौ पुण्डरीकाक्षः शैब्यसुग्रीववाहनः
At the proper time, under an auspicious star and moment, the lotus-eyed one departed, riding the steeds of Shaibya and Sugrīva.
अन्वारुरोह चाप्येनं प्रेम्णा राजा युधिष्ठिरः। अपास्य चास्य यन्तारं दारुकं यन्तृसत्तमम्
Out of affection, King Yudhiṣṭhira also mounted with him, dismissing Dāruka, the foremost charioteer, from his post.
अभीषून्सम्प्रजग्राह स्वयं कुरुपतिस्तदा। उपारुह्यार्जुनश्चाऽपि चामरव्यजनं सितम्
At that time, the lord of the Kurus himself took up the reins; Arjuna mounted and took up the white fan.
रुक्मदण्डं बृहद्बाहुर्विदुधाव प्रदक्षिणम्। तथैव भीमसेनोऽपि रथमारुह्य वीर्यवान्
The broad-armed one carried the golden-handled parasol, moving around the chariot; likewise, the mighty Bhīmasena mounted the chariot.
छत्रं शतशलाकं च दिव्यमाल्योपशोभितम्। वैडूर्यमणिदण्डं च चामीकरविभूषितम्
A parasol with a hundred ribs, adorned with divine garlands, its handle made of beryl and decorated with gold.
दधार तरसा भीमः मुच्छत्रं शार्ङ्गधन्वने। भीमसेनार्जुनौ चापि यमावरिनिषूदनौ
Bhima swiftly held that royal umbrella for Sharngadhanvan; Bhimasena and Arjuna, the slayers of Yama's foe, too.
पृष्ठतोऽनुययुः कृष्णमृत्विक्पौरजनैर्वृता। स तथा भ्रातृभिः सर्वैः केशवः परवीरहा
Followed behind Krishna, surrounded by priests and citizens; thus, with all his brothers, Keshava, destroyer of enemy heroes—
अन्वीयमानः शुशुभे शिष्यैरिव गुरुः प्रियैः। `अभिमन्युं च सौभद्रं वृद्धैः परिवृतस्तथा
Being followed, shone like a teacher with beloved disciples; and likewise, Abhimanyu, son of Subhadra, surrounded by elders.
रथमारोप्य निर्यातो धौम्यो ब्राह्मणपुङ्गवः। इन्द्रप्रस्थमतिक्रम्य क्रोशमात्रं महाद्युतिः'। पार्थमामन्त्र्य गोविन्दः परिष्वज्य सुपीडितम्
Dhaumya, the foremost of Brahmins, mounted the chariot and set out; after passing Indraprastha by a short distance, the illustrious Govinda, embracing Partha tightly, took leave.
युधिष्ठरं पूजयित्वा भीमसेनं यमौ तथा। परिष्वक्तो भृशं तैस्तु यमाभ्यामभिवादितः
After honoring Yudhishthira, Bhimasena, and the twins, he was warmly embraced by them and respectfully greeted by the twins.
योजनार्धमथो गत्वा कृष्णः परपुरञ्जयः। युधिष्ठिरं समामन्त्र्य निवर्तस्वेति भारत
Having gone half a yojana, Krishna, conqueror of enemy cities, addressed Yudhishthira, 'Now turn back,' O Bharata.
ततोऽभिवाद्य गोविन्दः पादौ जग्राह धर्मवित्। उत्थाप्य धर्मराजस्तु मूर्ध्न्युपाघ्राय केशवम्
Then Govinda, knower of righteousness, bowed and took hold of Yudhishthira's feet; the king of dharma, raising Keshava, smelled his head.
पाण्डवो यादवश्रेष्ठं कृष्णं कमललोचनम्। गम्यतामित्यनुज्ञाप्य धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः
The son of Pandu, Yudhishthira, king of dharma, after granting permission to Krishna, the best of the Yadavas with lotus eyes, said, 'You may go.'
ततस्तैः संविदं कृत्वा यथावन्मधुसूदनः। निवर्त्य च तथा कृच्छ्रात्पाण्डवान्सपदानुगान्
Then Madhusudana, having exchanged farewells as was proper, turned back the Pandavas and their followers with difficulty.
स्वां पुरीं प्रययौ हृष्टो यथा शक्रोऽमरावतीम्।। लोचनैरनुजग्मुस्ते तमादृष्टिपथात्तदा
Joyful, he went to his own city as Shakra goes to Amaravati; they followed him with their eyes as far as he could be seen.
मनोभिरनुजग्मुस्ते कृष्णं प्रीतिसमन्वयात्। अतृप्तमनसामेव तेषां केशवदर्शने
With their minds, too, they followed Krishna, filled with affection; their hearts unsatisfied with the sight of Keshava.
