Listen, dear one, to the wisdom that dissolves all boundaries and distinctions. I am untouched by righteousness or sin, unbound by bondage or liberation; I do not perceive what is joined or unjoined. All these opposites do not pertain to me. My true nature is to dissolve into myself, free from all affliction. For me, there is neither higher nor lower, no neutral state, no friend or foe. How can I speak of benefit or harm, when such dualities do not touch me? I abide in my own essence, free from suffering. I am not one who worships, nor am I the object of worship. There is neither instruction nor action for me. The very nature of consciousness is beyond words, for I am merged in my own being, free from affliction. There is nothing here to be called pervader or pervaded, no abode or non-abode. Emptiness and non-emptiness have no meaning for me. All dissolves into my own true nature, free from sorrow. There is no perceiver or anything to be perceived, no cause or effect. The thinkable and the unthinkable are both transcended. I rest in my own essence, free from all affliction. There is neither divider nor divided, neither knower nor known. Coming and going lose all meaning here, dear one. I abide in my own nature, free from all sorrow. I have neither body nor am I bodiless. I possess neither intellect, mind, nor senses. Passion and dispassion do not arise for me. I am the dissolution into my own true nature, free from affliction. There is no appearance that is clearly distinct, nor any that is concealed. Unity and division do not apply to me, friend. I rest in my own being, free from all sorrow. I am neither one who has mastered the senses nor one who has not. For me, restraint and discipline have never arisen. Victory and defeat are meaningless here, friend. I dissolve into my own essence, free from affliction. I am never of form or formlessness; I have neither beginning, end, nor middle. Strength and weakness do not pertain to me, friend. I abide in my own true nature, free from all sorrow. Whether something is mortal or immortal, poison or nectar, none of these ever arise for me. Pure and impure are equally absent, for I am the very essence of liberation, free from all disease. For me, there is no dream or awakening, no yogic posture, neither night nor day. The fourth state or not-fourth state are meaningless, for I am the essence of liberation, free from all disease. Know me as consciousness, freed from all and everything, untouched by illusion or its absence. Rituals such as twilight worship are of no relevance, for I am the essence of liberation, free from all disease. Know me as consciousness, united with all samadhis, freed from all marks and distinctions. Union and separation do not touch me, for I am the essence of liberation, free from all disease. I am neither a fool nor a scholar. Silence and non-silence never pertain to me. Reasoning and disputation do not arise, for I am the essence of liberation, free from all disease. I have neither father nor mother, no family or caste, no birth or death at any time. Attachment and delusion are absent, for I am the essence of liberation, free from all disease. I have neither set nor always risen; radiance and its absence never pertain to me. Rituals such as twilight worship have no place, for I am the essence of liberation, free from all disease. Know me, without doubt, as undisturbed, uninterrupted, and stainless. I am the essence of liberation, free from all disease. The wise abandon all meditations and all actions, whether good or bad. They drink the nectar of renunciation, dear one, for I am the essence of liberation, free from all disease. He attains, truly attains, where there is no sign of desire, absorbed in perfect sameness and purified by contemplation. The supreme avadhūta speaks this truth. Thus ends the fourth chapter. Om. This teaching has been spoken, vast like the sky, beyond all inquiry of higher or lower. How can the imperishable syllable be uttered, when all play and non-play are negated? By teachings beginning with “That Thou Art,” the truth has been established in the Self: you are that, free from all limitations, equal to all. Why do you grieve, O mind, when you are all-equal? Free from above and below, equal to all; free from inside and outside, equal to all. If you are free from all singularity, why do you grieve, O mind, being all-equal? There is no inquiry into imagined concepts, nor into cause and effect. Being all-equal, free from the junction of words, why do you grieve, O mind, being all-equal? There is no samadhi of knowledge or ignorance, nor of place or non-place, nor of time or non-time. Why do you grieve, O mind, being all-equal? There is no pot-space, nor any pot, no embodied soul, nor any soul, no division of cause and effect. Why do you grieve, O mind, being all-equal? Here, the state of liberation is ever-present, free from all distinctions of short and long, no division of circle or angle. Why do you grieve, O mind, being all-equal? Here, there is neither emptiness nor non-emptiness, neither purity nor impurity, neither all nor not-all. Why do you grieve, mind, when all is equal? There is no consideration of difference or non-difference, no inquiry into inner or outer connections. Free from enemy and friend, all is equal. Why do you grieve, mind, when all is equal? There is no essence of disciple or teacher, no inquiry into moving and unmoving. Here, liberation is uninterrupted everywhere. Why do you grieve, mind, when all is equal? Indeed, there is neither form nor formlessness, neither difference nor non-difference, neither creation nor dissolution. Why do you grieve, mind, when all is equal? There is no bondage by virtue or vice; how could I perform actions of the living or the dead? Thus, pure, stainless, all is equal. Why do you grieve, mind, when all is equal? Here, there is neither state nor non-state, neither desire nor absence of desire; here, consciousness and darkness are indeed equal to liberation. Why do you grieve, mind, when all is equal? Here, the essence is uninterrupted essence; there is no absence of connection or disconnection. If all is free from everything and all is equal, why do you grieve, mind, when all is equal? Homeless or in a hut, all companions are equal. Here, the highest is free from attachment and non-attachment, free from knowledge and ignorance. Why do you grieve, mind, when all is equal? There is neither change nor changelessness, which is unreal; neither distinction nor non-distinction, which is unreal. If truth is only in the Self, why do you grieve, mind, when all is equal? Here, all beings are truly equal, uninterrupted, and unmoving. Why do you grieve, mind, when all is equal? There is neither discrimination nor non-discrimination, which is ignorance; neither imagination nor non-imagination, which is ignorance. If there is only uninterrupted knowledge, why do you grieve, mind, when all is equal? There is no state of liberation, no state of bondage, no state of merit, no state of sin, no state of fullness, no state of emptiness. Why do you grieve, mind, when all is equal? Thus, the teaching reveals: when all is seen as equal and the Self alone shines, what sorrow can remain?
