Shandilya Bhakti Sutra
अथातो भक्तिजिज्ञासा
Now, therefore, inquiry into devotion.
सा परानुरक्तिरीश्वरे
That is supreme attachment to the Lord.
तत्संस्थस्यामृतत्वोपदेशात्
Because of the teaching that immortality belongs to one established in That.
ज्ञानमिति चेन्न द्विषतोऽपि ज्ञानस्य तदसंस्थिते:
If it is said to be knowledge, not so; for even the hostile possess knowledge, but not establishment in That.
तयोपक्षयाच्च
And because of its diminution.
द्वेषप्रतिपक्षभावाद्रसशब्दाच्च राग:
Attachment arises from the presence of the opposite of hatred, and from the word 'taste'.
न क्रिया कृत्यनपेक्षणाज्ज्ञानवत्
Not action, since it does not depend on what ought to be done, as with knowledge.
अत एव फ़लानन्त्यम्
Therefore, its fruit is endless.
तद्वत: प्रपत्तिशब्दाच्च न ज्ञानमितरप्रपत्तिवत्
Likewise: because of the term 'surrender', knowledge is not like other forms of surrender.
सा मुख्येतरापेक्षितत्वात्
It is primary, because others depend on it.
प्रकरणाच्च
And because of the context.
दर्शनफ़लमिति चेन्न तेन व्यवधानात्
If it is said to be the fruit of vision, not so; for there is an interval.
दृष्टत्वाच्च
And because it is seen.
अत एव तदभावाद्बल्लवीनाम्
Therefore, because of its absence among the cowherd women.
भक्त्या जानातीति चेन्नाभिज्ञप्त्या साहाय्यात्
If it is said that one knows through devotion, not so; for it is aided by recognition.
प्रागुक्तं च
And as previously stated.
एतेन विकल्पोऽपि प्रयुक्त:
By this, even the alternative is addressed.
देवभक्तिरितरस्मिन् साहचर्यात्
Devotion to the gods, in the other case, is due to association.
योगस्तूभयार्थमपेक्षणात् प्रयाजवत्
Yoga, however, is for both purposes, because of its being regarded as such, like the preliminary offerings.
गौण्या तु समाधिसिद्धि:
But through the secondary (means), perfection in concentration is attained.
हेया रागत्वादिति चेन्नोत्तमास्पदत्वात् सङ्गवत्
If it is said, 'It should be rejected because of attachment,' (we say) not so, because it is the highest support, like association.
तदेव कर्मिज्ञानयोगिभ्य आधिक्यशब्दात्
Indeed, from the word indicating superiority, it surpasses those devoted to action, knowledge, and yoga.
प्रश्ननिरूपणाभ्यामाधिक्यसिद्धे:
Superiority is established by both inquiry and determination.
नैव श्रद्धा तु साधारण्यात्
But not faith, because it is common (to all).
तस्यां तत्त्वे चानवस्थानात्
And because there is no finality in its reality.
ब्रह्मकाण्डं तु भक्तौ तस्यानुज्ञानाय सामान्यात्
But the section on Brahman, in devotion, is for its permission, because of its generality.
बुद्धिहेतुप्रवृत्तिराविशुद्धेरवघातवत्
The activity arising from reason, due to purity, is like the removal (of obstacles).
तदङ्गानां च
And of its auxiliaries as well.
तामैश्वर्यपरां काश्यप: परत्वात्
Kāśyapa holds that it is supreme in lordly power, because of its transcendence.
आत्मैकपरां बादरायण:
Bādarāyaṇa (holds) that it is supreme in the Self alone.
