Constancy in spiritual knowledge, vision of the purpose of truth—this is called knowledge; what is contrary to this is ignorance.
I will declare what is to be known, knowing which one attains immortality: beginningless, supreme Brahman, which is neither called existence nor nonexistence.
With hands and feet everywhere, with eyes, heads, and faces everywhere, with ears everywhere in the world, it stands pervading all.
Shining through all the qualities of the senses, yet without the senses; unattached, sustaining all, without qualities, yet the enjoyer of qualities.
It is outside and inside all beings; it moves and yet is unmoving; because it is subtle, it is unknowable; it is far and yet it is near.
It appears undivided among beings, yet seems to exist as if divided; know that it is the supporter of all beings, and it both absorbs and generates them.
That is the light of all lights, said to be beyond darkness; it is knowledge, the object of knowledge, and attainable through knowledge, established in the heart of all.
Thus, the field, knowledge, and the knowable have been briefly explained; my devotee, understanding this, becomes fit for my state.
Know both nature and spirit to be without beginning; also know that all modifications and qualities arise from nature.
Nature is said to be the cause in the creation of effect, cause, and agent; the spirit is said to be the cause in the experience of pleasure and pain.
The spirit, situated in nature, enjoys the qualities born of nature; attachment to these qualities is the cause of its birth in good and evil wombs.
The supreme spirit in this body is also called the witness, the consenter, the supporter, the enjoyer, the great Lord, and the supreme self.
Whoever thus knows spirit and nature, along with the qualities, is not born again, regardless of how he lives.
Some perceive the self within the self by meditation; others by the path of knowledge, and still others by the path of action.
Yet others, not knowing thus, hear from others and worship; they too, devoted to hearing, certainly cross beyond death.
Whatever being is born, whether unmoving or moving, know, O best of the Bharatas, that it arises from the union of the field and the knower of the field.
He who sees the supreme Lord equally present in all beings, the imperishable within the perishing, truly sees.
For seeing the Lord equally present everywhere, he does not harm the self by the self, and thus attains the highest goal.
He who sees that all actions are performed entirely by nature, and thus regards the self as non-agent, truly sees.
When he perceives the manifold existence of beings as resting in the One, and its expansion from That alone, then he attains Brahman.
Because it is beginningless and without qualities, this supreme self is imperishable; though dwelling in the body, O Kaunteya, it neither acts nor is tainted.
Just as the all-pervading space, because of its subtlety, is not tainted, so the self, though present everywhere in the body, is not tainted.
As the one sun illumines this entire world, so does the knower of the field illumine the whole field, O Bharata.
Those who, with the eye of knowledge, perceive the distinction between the field and the knower of the field, and the liberation from the nature of beings, they attain the supreme.
The Blessed Lord said: Again I shall declare the highest knowledge among all knowledges, knowing which all the sages have attained supreme perfection from here.
Resorting to this knowledge, they have come to a likeness with Me; at creation they are not born, and at dissolution they do not suffer.
My womb is the great Brahman; in that I place the seed. From that, O Bharata, arises the birth of all beings.
Whatever forms are produced in all wombs, O son of Kunti, the great Brahman is their womb, and I am the seed-giving father.
Sattva, rajas, and tamas—these qualities arise from nature; they bind the imperishable embodied one to the body, O mighty-armed.
Of these, sattva, being pure, is illuminating and free from sickness; yet it binds, O sinless one, by attachment to happiness and attachment to knowledge.
