The Blessed Lord said: With your mind attached to me, practicing yoga under my shelter, hear how you will know me fully and without doubt.
I will declare to you this knowledge and wisdom completely; knowing this, nothing else remains to be known in this world.
Among thousands of people, scarcely one strives for perfection; among those striving and perfected, hardly one knows me in truth.
Earth, water, fire, air, space, mind, intellect, and ego—these eight are my distinct material nature.
But know my other nature, O mighty-armed, which is higher—consisting of living beings, by which this world is sustained.
Understand that all beings arise from these two natures. I am the origin and the dissolution of the entire universe.
There is nothing higher than me, O Dhananjaya. All this is woven in me, like pearls on a string.
I am the taste in water, O Kaunteya; I am the radiance in the moon and sun; I am the syllable Om in all the Vedas, the sound in space, and the strength in men.
I am the pure fragrance in the earth, and the brilliance in fire; I am the life in all beings, and the austerity among ascetics.
Know Me, O Arjuna, as the eternal seed of all beings; I am the intelligence of the intelligent, and the splendor of the splendid.
I am the strength of the strong, free from desire and attachment; and among beings, O best of the Bharatas, I am desire that is not opposed to righteousness.
Whatever states are born of sattva, rajas, and tamas, know them all as coming from Me; yet I am not in them—they are in Me.
This whole world is deluded by these states made of the three gunas; it does not recognize Me, who am beyond them and imperishable.
Truly, this divine maya of Mine, made of the gunas, is difficult to cross; but those who take refuge in Me alone cross over this maya.
The evil-doers, the deluded, the lowest of men, whose knowledge is taken away by maya, and who have embraced demonic natures, do not seek refuge in Me.
Four kinds of virtuous people worship Me, O Arjuna: the distressed, the seeker of knowledge, the seeker of wealth, and the wise, O best of the Bharatas.
Of these, the wise one, ever united and devoted to the One, is distinguished; for I am exceedingly dear to the wise, and he is dear to Me.
All these are noble, but the wise one is regarded as My very self; for, with a disciplined mind, he is devoted to Me alone as the highest goal.
At the end of many births, the man of knowledge takes refuge in Me, realizing that Vasudeva is all; such a great soul is very rare.
Those whose knowledge is taken away by various desires worship other deities, following this or that rule, constrained by their own nature.
Whatever form any devotee desires to worship with faith, I make that faith steady in him for that very form.
Endowed with that faith, he seeks to worship that form and obtains from it his desired objects, which are indeed granted by Me alone.
But the fruit gained by those of limited understanding is temporary; those who worship the gods go to the gods, but My devotees come to Me.
The unwise think of Me, the unmanifest, as having become manifest, not knowing My higher, imperishable, and supreme nature.
I am not manifest to all, being veiled by My yoga-maya; this deluded world does not recognize Me, the unborn and imperishable.
I know, O Arjuna, the past, present, and future beings; but no one knows Me.
O descendant of Bharata, all beings become deluded at birth by the confusion arising from the pairs of opposites, born of desire and aversion.
But those people whose sin has ended, who perform virtuous deeds, freed from the confusion of the pairs of opposites, worship me with firm resolve.
Those who strive for liberation from old age and death, taking refuge in me, know Brahman, the entirety of spiritual knowledge, and all action.
Those who know me as the Supreme with regard to beings, divinities, and sacrifices, their minds steadfast, know me even at the time of departure.
