श्रद्धावाँल्लभते ज्ञानं तत्परः संयतेन्द्रियः। ज्ञानं लब्ध्वा परां शान्तिमचिरेणाधिगच्छति।।4.39।।
The one who has faith, who is devoted, and who has mastered the senses attains knowledge; having gained knowledge, one quickly attains supreme peace.
अज्ञश्चाश्रद्दधानश्च संशयात्मा विनश्यति। नायं लोकोऽस्ति न परो न सुखं संशयात्मनः।।4.40।।
The ignorant, the faithless, and the doubting self are destroyed; for the doubting person, neither this world nor the next nor happiness exists.
योगसंन्यस्तकर्माणं ज्ञानसंछिन्नसंशयम्। आत्मवन्तं न कर्माणि निबध्नन्ति धनञ्जय।।4.41।।
Actions do not bind one who has renounced actions through yoga, whose doubts are cut by knowledge, and who is self-possessed, O Dhananjaya.
तस्मादज्ञानसंभूतं हृत्स्थं ज्ञानासिनाऽऽत्मनः। छित्त्वैनं संशयं योगमातिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ भारत।।4.42।।
Therefore, with the sword of knowledge, cut off this doubt in your heart born of ignorance; established in yoga, stand up, O Bharata.
अर्जुन उवाच संन्यासं कर्मणां कृष्ण पुनर्योगं च शंससि। यच्छ्रेय एतयोरेकं तन्मे ब्रूहि सुनिश्िचतम्।।5.1।।
Arjuna said: You praise renunciation of actions, O Krishna, and again yoga; tell me decisively which one of these is superior.
श्री भगवानुवाच संन्यासः कर्मयोगश्च निःश्रेयसकरावुभौ। तयोस्तु कर्मसंन्यासात्कर्मयोगो विशिष्यते।।5.2।।
The Blessed Lord said: Both renunciation and karma-yoga lead to the highest good, but of the two, karma-yoga is superior to renunciation of actions.
ज्ञेयः स नित्यसंन्यासी यो न द्वेष्टि न काङ्क्षति। निर्द्वन्द्वो हि महाबाहो सुखं बन्धात्प्रमुच्यते।।5.3।।
Know that person as always a renunciant, who neither hates nor desires; free from dualities, O mighty-armed, one is easily released from bondage.
सांख्ययोगौ पृथग्बालाः प्रवदन्ति न पण्डिताः। एकमप्यास्थितः सम्यगुभयोर्विन्दते फलम्।।5.4।।
Only the childish speak of Sankhya and Yoga as different, not the wise; one who properly follows either gains the fruit of both.
यत्सांख्यैः प्राप्यते स्थानं तद्योगैरपि गम्यते। एकं सांख्यं च योगं च यः पश्यति स पश्यति।।5.5।।
The state attained by the Sankhyas is also reached by the Yogis; one who sees Sankhya and Yoga as one truly sees.
संन्यासस्तु महाबाहो दुःखमाप्तुमयोगतः। योगयुक्तो मुनिर्ब्रह्म नचिरेणाधिगच्छति।।5.6।।
But renunciation, O mighty-armed, is hard to attain without yoga; the sage equipped with yoga quickly attains Brahman.
योगयुक्तो विशुद्धात्मा विजितात्मा जितेन्द्रियः। सर्वभूतात्मभूतात्मा कुर्वन्नपि न लिप्यते।।5.7।।
One who is united with yoga, pure in mind, self-controlled, with senses conquered, and whose self is the self of all beings, though acting, is not tainted.
नैव किंचित्करोमीति युक्तो मन्येत तत्त्ववित्। पश्यन् श्रृणवन्स्पृशञ्जिघ्रन्नश्नन्गच्छन्स्वपन् श्वसन्।।5.8।।
The one established in yoga, knowing the truth, thinks, 'I do nothing at all,' seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, eating, going, sleeping, breathing,
प्रलपन्विसृजन्गृह्णन्नुन्मिषन्निमिषन्नपि। इन्द्रियाणीन्द्रियार्थेषु वर्तन्त इति धारयन्।।5.9।।
Speaking, letting go, grasping, opening and closing the eyes, convinced that the senses move among their objects.
ब्रह्मण्याधाय कर्माणि सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा करोति यः। लिप्यते न स पापेन पद्मपत्रमिवाम्भसा।।5.10।।
Whoever performs actions, offering them to Brahman, abandoning attachment, is not tainted by sin, just as a lotus leaf is not wetted by water.
कायेन मनसा बुद्ध्या केवलैरिन्द्रियैरपि। योगिनः कर्म कुर्वन्ति सङ्गं त्यक्त्वाऽऽत्मशुद्धये।।5.11।।
With body, mind, intellect, and even with the senses alone, yogis perform actions, abandoning attachment, for the purification of the self.
युक्तः कर्मफलं त्यक्त्वा शान्तिमाप्नोति नैष्ठिकीम्। अयुक्तः कामकारेण फले सक्तो निबध्यते।।5.12।।
The united one, abandoning the fruit of action, attains lasting peace; the unsteady one, attached to results by desire, is bound.
सर्वकर्माणि मनसा संन्यस्यास्ते सुखं वशी। नवद्वारे पुरे देही नैव कुर्वन्न कारयन्।।5.13।।
Having mentally renounced all actions, the self-controlled person dwells happily in the city of nine gates, the body, neither acting nor causing action.
न कर्तृत्वं न कर्माणि लोकस्य सृजति प्रभुः। न कर्मफलसंयोगं स्वभावस्तु प्रवर्तते।।5.14।।
The Lord does not create agency, actions, or the union with the fruits of actions for people; rather, nature acts.
नादत्ते कस्यचित्पापं न चैव सुकृतं विभुः। अज्ञानेनावृतं ज्ञानं तेन मुह्यन्ति जन्तवः।।5.15।।
The all-pervading does not accept anyone's sin or virtue; knowledge is covered by ignorance, and thus beings are deluded.
ज्ञानेन तु तदज्ञानं येषां नाशितमात्मनः। तेषामादित्यवज्ज्ञानं प्रकाशयति तत्परम्।।5.16।।
But for those whose ignorance is destroyed by knowledge of the self, that knowledge, like the sun, reveals the supreme.
तद्बुद्धयस्तदात्मानस्तन्निष्ठास्तत्परायणाः। गच्छन्त्यपुनरावृत्तिं ज्ञाननिर्धूतकल्मषाः।।5.17।।
Those whose intellect, self, faith, and refuge are fixed in That, whose impurities are destroyed by knowledge, go to non-return, liberation.
विद्याविनयसंपन्ने ब्राह्मणे गवि हस्तिनि। शुनि चैव श्वपाके च पण्डिताः समदर्शिनः।।5.18।।
The wise see with equal vision a learned and humble brāhmaṇa, a cow, an elephant, a dog, and even a dog-eater.
इहैव तैर्जितः सर्गो येषां साम्ये स्थितं मनः। निर्दोषं हि समं ब्रह्म तस्माद्ब्रह्मणि ते स्थिताः।।5.19।।
Even here, those whose minds are established in equality have conquered birth; for Brahman is flawless and equal, therefore they abide in Brahman.
न प्रहृष्येत्प्रियं प्राप्य नोद्विजेत्प्राप्य चाप्रियम्। स्थिरबुद्धिरसम्मूढो ब्रह्मविद्ब्रह्मणि स्थितः।।5.20।।
One who knows Brahman, whose intellect is steady and undeluded, is not elated by obtaining the pleasant nor disturbed by the unpleasant, and is established in Brahman.
बाह्यस्पर्शेष्वसक्तात्मा विन्दत्यात्मनि यत्सुखम्। स ब्रह्मयोगयुक्तात्मा सुखमक्षयमश्नुते।।5.21।।
With the self unattached to external contacts, finding happiness within, that person, united with Brahman-yoga, attains imperishable happiness.
ये हि संस्पर्शजा भोगा दुःखयोनय एव ते। आद्यन्तवन्तः कौन्तेय न तेषु रमते बुधः।।5.22।।
Pleasures born of contact are indeed sources of pain, O son of Kunti; they have a beginning and an end, and the wise do not delight in them.
शक्नोतीहैव यः सोढुं प्राक्शरीरविमोक्षणात्। कामक्रोधोद्भवं वेगं स युक्तः स सुखी नरः।।5.23।।
Whoever is able, even here, before leaving the body, to withstand the force of desire and anger, that person is a yogi, a happy human.
योऽन्तःसुखोऽन्तरारामस्तथान्तर्ज्योतिरेव यः। स योगी ब्रह्मनिर्वाणं ब्रह्मभूतोऽधिगच्छति।।5.24।।
One whose happiness is within, whose delight is within, whose light is within, that yogi, having become Brahman, attains Brahman-nirvāṇa.
लभन्ते ब्रह्मनिर्वाणमृषयः क्षीणकल्मषाः। छिन्नद्वैधा यतात्मानः सर्वभूतहिते रताः।।5.25।।
The seers whose impurities are destroyed, whose doubts are cut off, whose minds are controlled, who delight in the welfare of all beings, attain Brahman-nirvāṇa.
कामक्रोधवियुक्तानां यतीनां यतचेतसाम्। अभितो ब्रह्मनिर्वाणं वर्तते विदितात्मनाम्।।5.26।।
For those renunciates who are free from desire and anger, whose minds are controlled and who know the self, Brahman-nirvāṇa exists all around.
