अर्वाञ्चमिन्द्रममुतो हवामहे यो गोजिद्धनजिदश्वजिद्यः । इमं नो यज्ञं विहवे शृणोत्वस्माकमभूर्हर्यश्व मेदी
We call hereupon Indra, who is victorious in cows, wealth, and horses. May he hear this our sacrifice in the invocation; may you, delighting in horses, be our leader.
यो गिरिष्वजायथा वीरुधां बलवत्तमः । कुष्ठेहि तक्मनाशन तक्मानं नाशयन्न् इतः
You who were born on the mountain, the strongest among plants, O Kuṣṭha, destroyer of fever, drive away the fever from here.
सुपर्णसुवने गिरौ जातं हिमवतस्परि । धनैरभि श्रुत्वा यन्ति विदुर्हि तक्मनाशनम्
Born on the mountain, offspring of the eagle, beyond the Himalaya—having heard with wealth, they come, for they know the destruction of fever.
अश्वत्थो देवसदनस्तृतीयस्यामितो दिवि । तत्रामृतस्य चक्षणं देवाः कुष्ठमवन्वत
The aśvattha tree, the divine abode, is in the third heaven; there the gods found the essence of immortality, the Kuṣṭha plant.
हिरण्ययी नौरचरद्धिरण्यबन्धना दिवि । तत्रामृतस्य पुष्पं देवाः कुष्ठमवन्वत
A golden ship, with golden bindings, moved in the sky; there the gods found the flower of immortality, the Kuṣṭha plant.
हिरण्ययाः पन्थान आसन्न् अरित्राणि हिरण्यया । नावो हिरण्ययीरासन् याभिः कुष्ठं निरावहन्
Golden were the paths, golden the oars; golden were the ships by which they brought forth the Kuṣṭha plant.
इमं मे कुष्ठ पूरुषं तमा वह तं निष्कुरु । तमु मे अगदं कृधि
Carry away this Kuṣṭha of mine, O plant, take it away, remove it; make it a remedy for me.
देवेभ्यो अधि जातोऽसि सोमस्यासि सखा हितः । स प्राणाय व्यानाय चक्षुषे मे अस्मै मृड
You are born among the gods, you are a friend of Soma, set apart; be gracious to this one, for his breath, his life, his sight.
उदङ्जातो हिमवतः स प्राच्यां नीयसे जनम् । तत्र कुष्ठस्य नामान्युत्तमानि वि भेजिरे
Born in the north of the Himalaya, you are led to the eastern people; there the highest names of Kuṣṭha were distributed.
उत्तमो नाम कुष्ठस्युत्तमो नाम ते पिता । यक्ष्मं च सर्वं नाशय तक्मानं चारसं कृधि
The highest is the name of Kuṣṭha, the highest is the name of your father; destroy all disease and make the fever powerless.
शीर्षामयमुपहत्यामक्ष्योस्तन्वो रपः । कुष्ठस्तत्सर्वं निष्करद्दैवं समह वृष्ण्यम्
Having struck down the disease of the head and the fluids of the eyes and body, Kuṣṭha has removed all that, the divine, together with the virile power.
रात्री माता नभः पितार्यमा ते पितामहः । सिलाची नाम वा असि सा देवानामसि स्वसा
Night is your mother, the sky your father, Aryaman your grandfather; you are called Silācī, and you are the sister of the gods.
यस्त्वा पिबति जीवति त्रायसे पुरुषं त्वम् । भर्त्री हि शश्वतामसि जनानां च न्यञ्चनी
Whoever drinks you lives; you protect the person. You are truly the nourisher of people and their supporter.
वृक्षंवृक्षमा रोहसि वृषण्यन्तीव कन्यला । जयन्ती प्रत्यातिष्ठन्ती स्परणी नाम वा असि
You grow from tree to tree, flourishing like a maiden; victorious, standing firm, you are called the touch-healer.
यद्दण्डेन यदिष्वा यद्वारुर्हरसा कृतम् । तस्य त्वमसि निष्कृतिः सेमं निष्कृधि पूरुषम्
Whatever has been done with a staff, with arrows, or by force—of that you are the remedy; release this man from that guilt.
भद्रात्प्लक्षान् निस्तिष्ठस्यश्वत्थात्खदिराद्धवात्। भद्रान् न्यग्रोधात्पर्णात्सा न एह्यरुन्धति
From the auspicious fig tree, from the sacred fig, from the acacia, from the auspicious banyan, from the leaf—she, Arundhati, comes here.
हिरण्यवर्णे सुभगे सूर्यवर्णे वपुष्टमे । रुतं गच्छासि निष्कृते निष्कृतिर्नाम वा असि
Golden-hued, fortunate one, sun-colored, most beautiful—O Remedy, you proceed with truth; you are called Remedy by name.
हिरण्यवर्णे सुभगे शुष्मे लोमशवक्षणे । अपामसि स्वसा लाक्षे वातो हात्मा बभूव ते
Golden-hued, fortunate one, powerful, with shaggy hair and sharp glance—you are the sister of the waters, or of lac; the wind has become your soul.
सिलाची नाम कानीनोऽजबभ्रु पिता तव । अश्वो यमस्य यः श्यावस्तस्य हास्नास्युक्षिता
Silācī is your name, O Kāninī; Ajababhru is your father; the dark horse of Yama, whose bridle you have yoked.
अश्वस्यास्नः संपतिता सा वृक्षामभि सिष्यदे । सरा पतत्रिणी भूत्वा सा न एह्यरुन्धति
The bridle of the horse, having fallen, clings to the trees; becoming a flowing, winged one, she, Arundhati, comes here.
ब्रह्म जज्ञानं प्रथमं पुरस्ताद्वि सीमतः सुरुचो वेन आवः । स बुध्न्या उपमा अस्य विष्ठाः सतश्च योनिमसतश्च वि वः
Brahman was born as the first, in the beginning, before all; with radiance, Vena spread forth; the deep foundations are his models; from the existent and the non-existent, he brought forth offspring.
अनाप्ता ये वः प्रथमा यानि कर्माणि चक्रिरे । वीरान् नो अत्र मा दभन् तद्व एतत्पुरो दधे
Those of you who were unattainable, who performed the first deeds—may they not harm our heroes here; that is what was established before.
सहस्रधार एव ते समस्वरन् दिवो नाके मधुजिह्वा असश्चतः । तस्य स्पशो न नि मिषन्ति भूर्णयः पदेपदे पाशिनः सन्ति सेतवे
With a thousand streams, they sounded together in the sky, in heaven, with honeyed tongues; their spies do not close their eyes, ever watchful, at every step, they are bonds for the path.
पर्यू षु प्र धन्वा वाजसातये परि वृत्राणि सक्षणिः । द्विषस्तदध्यर्णवेनेयसे सनिस्रसो नामासि त्रयोदशो मास इन्द्रस्य गृहः
Circle around, drive forth for the gaining of strength; break through the obstacles; you are the thirteenth month, the house of Indra, with a name, for the sake of victory.
न्वेतेनारात्सीरसौ स्वाहा । तिग्मायुधौ तिग्महेती सुशेवौ सोमारुद्राविह सु मृडतं नः
With this, may you drive away the hostile ones—svāhā! O Soma and Rudras, sharp-weaponed, sharp-pointed, gracious, come here and grant us happiness.
अवैतेनारात्सीरसौ स्वाहा । तिग्मायुधौ तिग्महेती सुशेवौ सोमारुद्राविह सु मृडतं नः
With this, may you drive away the hostile ones—svāhā! O Soma and Rudras, sharp-weaponed, sharp-pointed, gracious, come here and grant us happiness.
अपैतेनारात्सीरसौ स्वाहा । तिग्मायुधौ तिग्महेती सुशेवौ सोमारुद्राविह सु मृडतं नः
With this, may you remove the hostile ones—svāhā! O Soma and Rudras, sharp-weaponed, sharp-pointed, gracious, come here and grant us happiness.
मुमुक्तमस्मान् दुरितादवद्याज्जुषेथां यज्ञममृतमस्मासु धत्तम्
Release us from evil and blame; accept our sacrifice; place immortality among us.
चक्षुषो हेते मनसो हेते ब्रह्मणो हेते तपसश्च हेते । मेन्या मेनिरस्यमेनयस्ते सन्तु येऽस्मामभ्यघायन्ति
The missiles of the eye, the missiles of the mind, the missiles of speech, and the missiles of austerity—may those intentions and thoughts of theirs be turned back, who wish to harm us.
योऽस्मांश्चक्षुषा मनसा चित्त्याकूत्या च यो अघायुरभिदासात्। त्वं तान् अग्ने मेन्यामेनीन् कृणु स्वाहा
Whoever, with eye, mind, thought, or intention, seeks to harm us—O Agni, turn back those intentions and thoughts of theirs—svāhā!
