He who upheld the earth, the all-nourishing, who filled the midspace with sap, who propped up the sky above with greatness—by that Odana one crosses over death.
From whom the months were fashioned, thirty-ribbed, from whom the year was fashioned, twelve-spoked; whom day and night encompass without end—by that Odana one crosses over death.
He who is the giver of breath, who became the breath-giver, for whom the worlds flow with ghee; whose are all the shining regions—by that Odana one crosses over death.
From whom the cooked nectar arose, who became the lord of the Gāyatrī, in whom the Vedas of all forms are established—by that Odana one crosses over death.
Drive away the one who hates, who is hostile to the gods, whoever are my rivals—let them be cast down. I cook the all-conquering sacrificial rice; let the gods who heed devotion listen to me.
Let Agni Vaiśvānara, the mighty bull, burn up with true strength those who wish to harm us, who seek to injure or attack us.
Whoever seeks to harm us, whether intending or attempting harm, and whoever attacks—him I place between the jaws of Agni Vaiśvānara.
Those who hunt us in the house, who shout in opposition on the new moon, those flesh-eaters who attack others—I withstand all of them with force.
I withstand the demons; I overpower them and grant wealth. I strike down all who wish to harm; may my intention be fulfilled.
The gods who laugh at the thief, who measure speed with the sun, those in rivers and mountains—with all those beings I am allied.
I am the scorching one among demons, like a tiger among cattle; like a dog before a lion, seeing me, they find no refuge.
I cannot be overcome by demons, nor by thieves, nor by forest-dwellers; therefore, demons perish from the village I enter.
Whatever village I enter, this fierce power is mine; from there, demons perish and no evil approaches.
Those who provoke me with words, like flies an elephant, I consider them evil-doers among people, short-lived as they are.
Let destruction seize him who is hostile to me, as a horse is seized by a horse-catcher; the one who is angry with me is not released from the snares.
With you, O herb, Atharvans of old slew the demons; with you Kaśyapa slew them, with you Kaṇva and Agastya.
With you we drive away Apsarases and Gandharvas; O goat-horned one, destroy all demons with your fragrance.
Let the Apsarases go to the river, to the stream of waters, to the uncertain ford; let Gulgulū, Pīlā, Naladyu, fragrant with ox-balm, and Pramandanī—let those Apsarases, now departed, be awakened.
Where the aśvattha and banyan, the great trees with crested tops stand—let those Apsarases, now departed, be awakened there.
Where your green swings are, O Arjuna, and where the striking posts resound—let those Apsarases, now departed, be awakened there.
This, the most potent among herbs and plants, is come—goat-horned, kingly, sharp-horned, let it drive away evil.
From the dancers with crests, from the lord of the Gandharvas and Apsarases, I break the testicles and take away their virility.
Fierce are Indra's weapons, a hundred-pointed, made of iron; with these may he drive away the Gandharvas who seize the offerings, and those who lurk below.
Fierce are Indra's weapons, a hundred-pointed, made of gold; with these may he drive away the Gandharvas who seize the offerings, and those who lurk below.
Drive away those who lurk below, those who bring sorrow, and the spirits in the waters; O plant, destroy all the demons, and prevail.
Like a dog, like a monkey, like a boy with hair all over, appearing as a beloved one to the sight, the Gandharva attaches himself to women; him we destroy here with the power of sacred knowledge.
Your wives are the Apsarases, you Gandharvas are their husbands; depart, O immortals, from mortals—do not associate with them.
I invoke here that Apsaras, skilled and divine, who bursts forth and brings together, who makes the dice fall in the game.
I invoke here that Apsaras, skilled and divine, who searches and scatters, who gathers up the dice in the game.
She who dances around, taking the dice from the game, may she, who gathers our dice, win a great prize for us by her skill; may she, full of abundance, come to us—may they not win this wealth from us.
