ये ते पाशा वरुण सप्तसप्त त्रेधा तिष्ठन्ति विषिता रुषन्तः । छिनन्तु सर्वे अनृतं वदन्तं यः सत्यवाद्यति तं सृजन्तु
O Varuṇa, those nooses of yours, seven by seven, set in threefold ways, fiercely arrayed—let them all cut off the one who speaks falsehood; but let the one who speaks truth go free.
शतेन पाशैरभि धेहि वरुणैनं मा ते मोच्यनृतवाङ्नृचक्षः । आस्तां जाल्म उदरं श्रंशयित्वा कोश इवाबन्धः परिकृत्यमानः
With a hundred nooses, O Varuṇa, bind this man; let not the liar, the wrongdoer, escape you. Let the wretch remain, his belly collapsed, like a bag cut open and emptied.
यः समाभ्यो वरुणो यो व्याभ्यो यः संदेश्यो वरुणो यो विदेश्यो । यो दैवो वरुणो यश्च मानुषः
Whoever is of us, O Varuṇa, or of others; whoever is to be sent, O Varuṇa, or to be kept away; whoever is divine, O Varuṇa, or human—
तैस्त्वा सर्वैरभि ष्यामि पाशैरसावामुष्यायणामुष्याः पुत्र । तान् उ ते सर्वान् अनुसंदिशामि
With all those nooses I will bind you, this one, that one, and that one's son; all of them I now assign to you.
ईशाणां त्वा भेषजानामुज्जेष आ रभामहे । चक्रे सहस्रवीर्यं सर्वस्मा ओषधे त्वा
We take hold of you, ruler of remedies, for deliverance. O herb, with a thousandfold power, I apply you for all healing.
सत्यजितं शपथयावनीं सहमानां पुनःसराम् । सर्वाः समह्व्योषधीरितो नः पारयादिति
Victorious by truth, bearing oaths, enduring, returning again—may all the assembled herbs call out and carry us across.
या शशाप शपनेन याघं मूरमादधे । या रसस्य हरणाय जातमारेभे तोकमत्तु सा
She who cursed with a curse, who brought harm and madness, who was born to steal the sap, let her eat her own offspring.
यां ते चक्रुरामे पात्रे यां चक्रुर्नीललोहिते । आमे मांसे कृत्यां यां चक्रुस्तया कृत्याकृतो जहि
The witchcraft they made in raw vessels, the witchcraft they made in blue and red—whatever witchcraft they made in raw flesh, with that witchcraft, destroy the doer of witchcraft.
दौष्वप्न्यं दौर्जीवित्यं रक्षो अभ्वमराय्यः । दुर्णाम्नीः सर्वा दुर्वाचस्ता अस्मन् नाशयामसि
Evil dreams, misfortune, demons, ruin, all ill-named and evil words—these we drive away from us.
क्षुधामारं तृष्णामारमगोतामनपत्यताम् । अपामार्ग त्वया वयं सर्वं तदप मृज्महे
Hunger, thirst, childlessness, lack of cattle—O Apāmārga, with you we wipe away all this.
तृष्णामारं क्षुधामारमथो अक्षपराजयम् । अपामार्ग त्वया वयं सर्वं तदप मृज्महे
Thirst, hunger, defeat at dice—O Apāmārga, with you we wipe away all this.
अपामार्ग ओषधीनां सर्वासामेक इद्वशी । तेन ते मृज्म आस्थितमथ त्वमगदश्चर
O Apāmārga, you alone are sovereign over all herbs; with you I wipe away what has settled, and you move about as a remedy.
समं ज्योतिः सूर्येणाह्ना रात्री समावती । कृणोमि सत्यमूतयेऽरसाः सन्तु कृत्वरीः
I make the light equal with the sun by day, and the night equally complete; I make truth for protection—let the juices be effective.
यो देवाः कृत्यां कृत्वा हरादविदुषो गृहम् । वत्सो धारुरिव मातरं तं प्रत्यगुप पद्यताम्
Whoever, having performed witchcraft, enters the house of the ignorant—let him, like a calf to its mother, return back again.
अमा कृत्वा पाप्मानं यस्तेनान्यं जिघांसति । अश्मानस्तस्यां दग्धायां बहुलाः फट्करिक्रति
He who, having made evil his home, seeks to harm another—when that is burned, many stones crackle loudly.
सहस्रधामन् विशिखान् विग्रीवां छायया त्वम् । प्रति स्म चक्रुषे कृत्यां प्रियां प्रियावते हर
With a thousand powers, with arrows, with a neckless shadow, you have made witchcraft; take away the beloved from the beloved.
अनयाहमोषध्या सर्वाः कृत्या अदूदुषम् । यां क्षेत्रे चक्रुर्यां गोषु यां वा ते पुरुषेषु
With this herb I drive away all witchcraft, whether made in the field, among cattle, or among people.
यश्चकार न शशाक कर्तुं शश्रे पादमङ्गुरिम् । चकार भद्रमस्मभ्यमात्मने तपनं तु सः
Whoever did it but could not complete it, who cut the foot or toe—he has done good for us and for himself, but let him be scorched by the sun.
अपामार्गोऽप मार्ष्टु क्षेत्रियं शपथश्च यः । अपाह यातुधानीरप सर्वा अराय्यः
Let the apāmārga plant wipe away what is of the field and any curse; drive away the sorceresses, drive away all hostile ones.
अपमृज्य यातुधानान् अप सर्वा अराय्यः । अपामार्ग त्वया वयं सर्वं तदप मृज्महे
Having wiped away the sorceresses, having driven away all hostile ones, with you, apāmārga, we wipe away all that.
उतो अस्यबन्धुकृदुतो असि नु जामिकृत्। उतो कृत्याकृतः प्रजां नदमिवा छिन्धि वार्षिकम्
You are the maker of kin, you are indeed the maker of in-laws; you are made by the spell, cut off the offspring like a river cuts the rainy season.
ब्राह्मणेन पर्युक्तासि कण्वेन नार्षदेन । सेनेवैषि त्विषीमती न तत्र भयमस्ति यत्र प्राप्नोष्योषधे
You are empowered by the Brahmin, by Kaṇva, by Nārṣada; you go forth with brightness, O plant, there is no fear where you reach.
अग्रमेष्योषधीनां ज्योतिषेवाभिदीपयन् । उत त्रातासि पाकस्याथो हन्तासि रक्षसः
You go at the head of the plants, shining like a light; you are the protector from harm, and also the slayer of demons.
यददो देवा असुरांस्त्वयाग्रे निरकुर्वत । ततस्त्वमध्योषधेऽपामार्गो अजायथाः
When the gods set apart the Asuras at the beginning with you, then, O plant apāmārga, you were born among the plants.
विभिन्दती शतशाखा विभिन्दन् नाम ते पिता । प्रत्यग्वि भिन्धि त्वं तं यो अस्मामभिदासति
Splitting, with a hundred branches—Splitting is the name of your father; split back, you, the one who attacks us.
असद्भूम्याः समभवत्तद्यामेति महद्व्यचः । तद्वै ततो विधूपायत्प्रत्यक्कर्तारमृच्छतु
It arose from the unfirm earth, that which goes widely; let that, having been fumigated from there, reach the one who turns back.
प्रत्यङ्हि संबभूविथ प्रतीचीनफलस्त्वम् । सर्वान् मच्छपथामधि वरीयो यावया वधम्
You have become turned back, you are fruit facing backward; drive away all harm from my path, and avert destruction.
शतेन मा परि पाहि सहस्रेणाभि रक्षा मा । इन्द्रस्ते वीरुधां पत उग्र ओज्मानमा दधत्
Protect me with a hundred, guard me with a thousand; Indra has placed in you, plant, fierce and mighty power.
आ पश्यति प्रति पश्यति परा पश्यति पश्यति । दिवमन्तरिक्षमाद्भूमिं सर्वं तद्देवि पश्यति
She sees forward, she sees backward, she sees afar, she sees; the goddess sees all—heaven, the midspace, and earth.
तिस्रो दिवस्तिस्रः पृथिवीः षट्चेमाः प्रदिशाः पृथक्। त्वयाहं सर्वा भूतानि पश्यानि देव्योषधे
Three are the heavens, three are the earths, and these six directions separately; with you, O divine plant, I see all beings.
