अजो ह्यग्नेरजनिष्ट शोकात्सो अपश्यज्जनितारमग्रे । तेन देवा देवतामग्र आयन् तेन रोहान् रुरुहुर्मेध्यासः
The unborn one was born from Agni's heat; he saw his begetter at the beginning; with him the gods first attained divinity, with him the pure ones grew strong.
क्रमध्वमग्निना नाकमुख्यान् हस्तेषु बिभ्रतः । दिवस्पृष्ठं स्वर्गत्वा मिश्रा देवेभिराध्वम्
Advance with Agni to the highest heaven, bearing the leaders in your hands; touch the summit of heaven, go together with the gods.
पृष्ठात्पृथिव्या अहमन्तरिक्षमारुहमन्तरिक्षाद्दिवमारुहम् । दिवो नाकस्य पृष्ठात्स्वर्ज्योतिरगामहम्
From the earth's surface I ascended to the midspace; from the midspace I ascended to heaven; from the summit of heaven I reached the radiant world.
स्वर्यन्तो नापेक्षन्त आ द्यां रोहन्ति रोदसी । यज्ञं ये विश्वतोधारं सुविद्वांसो वितेनिरे
Those who seek heaven do not look back; they ascend to the two worlds; those wise ones, who have spread the all-supporting sacrifice, ascend.
अग्ने प्रेहि प्रथमो देवतानां चक्षुर्देवानामुत मानुषाणाम् । इयक्षमाणा भृगुभिः सजोषाः स्वर्यन्तु यजमानाः स्वस्ति
Agni, go forth, first among the gods, the eye of gods and of men; those who worship, united with the Bhrigus, let them attain heaven, let the sacrificers prosper.
अजमनज्मि पयसा घृतेन दिव्यं सुपर्णं पयसं बृहन्तम् । तेन गेष्म सुकृतस्य लोकं स्वरारोहन्तो अभि नाकमुत्तमम्
I have eaten the unborn with milk, with ghee, the divine, great-winged, abundant milk; with this we shall reach the world of the righteous, ascending to the highest heaven.
पञ्चौदनं पञ्चभिरङ्गुलिभिर्दर्व्योद्धर पञ्चधैतमोदनम् । प्राच्यां दिशि शिरो अजस्य धेहि दक्षिणायां दिशि दक्षिणं धेहि पार्श्वम्
Lift the fivefold rice with the five fingers, with the ladle; place the head of the unborn in the eastern direction, place the right side in the southern direction.
प्रतीच्यां दिशि भसदमस्य धेह्युत्तरस्यां दिश्युत्तरं धेहि पार्श्वम् । ऊर्ध्वायां दिश्यजस्यानूकं धेहि दिशि ध्रुवायां धेहि पाजस्यमन्तरिक्षे मध्यतो मध्यमस्य
Place the ashes of the unborn in the western direction, place the left side in the northern direction; place the back in the upward direction, place the foundation in the fixed direction, and the middle in the center of the midspace.
शृतमजं शृतया प्रोर्णुहि त्वचा सर्वैरङ्गैः संभृतं विश्वरूपम् । स उत् तिष्ठेतो अभि नाकमुत्तमं पद्भिश्चतुर्भिः प्रति तिष्ठ दिक्षु
Pour the cooked unborn with clarified butter, cover it with skin, complete with all its limbs and of all forms; let him rise up to the highest heaven, stand in all four directions with his feet.
समुत्पतन्तु प्रदिशो नभस्वतीः समभ्राणि वातजूतानि यन्तु । महऋषभस्य नदतो नभस्वतो वाश्रा आपः पृथिवीं तर्पयन्तु
Let the regions of the sky arise, let the cloud-bearing winds go forth; let the mighty, roaring, cloud-born waters satisfy the earth.
समीक्षयन्तु तविषाः सुदानवोऽपां रसा ओषधीभिः सचन्ताम् । वर्षस्य सर्गा महयन्तु भूमिं पृथग्जायन्तामोषधयो विश्वरूपाः
Let the powerful, generous ones look with favor; let the juices of the waters unite with the plants; let the showers of rain make the earth great, let the various plants of all forms be born.
समीक्षयस्व गायतो नभांस्यपां वेगासः पृथगुद्विजन्ताम् । वर्षस्य सर्गा महयन्तु भूमिं पृथग्जायन्तां वीरुधो विश्वरूपाः
Look favorably, O singer, upon the heavens; let the swift currents of the waters arise separately; let the showers of rain make the earth great, let the various herbs of all forms be born.
गणास्त्वोप गायन्तु मारुताः पर्जन्य घोषिणः पृथक्। सर्गा वर्षस्य वर्षतो वर्षन्तु पृथिवीमनु
Let the hosts of the Maruts sing forth, resounding with the thunder of rain, each in their own way; let the streams of rain pour down upon the earth.
उदीरयत मरुतः समुद्रतस्त्वेषो अर्को नभ उत्पातयाथ । महऋषभस्य नदतो नभस्वतो वाश्रा आपः पृथिवीं तर्पयन्तु
Raise up, O Maruts, from the ocean; let the mighty sun ascend the sky; let the waters, driven by the bellowing of the great bull, satisfy the earth.
अभि क्रन्द स्तनयार्दयोदधिं भूमिं पर्जन्य पयसा समङ्धि । त्वया सृष्टं बहुलमैतु वर्षमाशारैषी कृशगुरेत्वस्तम्
Cry out, thunder, shake the ocean and the earth; let the rain, created by you, come in abundance, both for the lean and the stout, in its proper season.
सं वोऽवन्तु सुदानव उत्सा अजगरा उत । मरुद्भिः प्रच्युता मेघा वर्षन्तु पृथिवीमनु
May the generous ones, the wells, and the deep pools protect you all; let the clouds, driven by the Maruts, rain upon the earth.
आशामाशां वि द्योततां वाता वान्तु दिशोदिशः । मरुद्भिः प्रच्युता मेघाः सं यन्तु पृथिवीमनु
Let hope shine forth; let the winds blow from every direction; let the clouds, driven by the Maruts, unite over the earth.
आपो विद्युदभ्रं वर्षं सं वोऽवन्तु सुदानव उत्सा अजगरा उत । मरुद्भिः प्रच्युता मेघाः प्रावन्तु पृथिवीमनु
Let the waters, lightning, clouds, and rain protect you all; let the generous ones, the wells, and the deep pools; let the clouds, driven by the Maruts, fill the earth.
अपामग्निस्तनूभिः संविदानो य ओषधीनामधिपा बभूव । स नो वर्षं वनुतां जातवेदाः प्राणं प्रजाभ्यो अमृतं दिवस्परि
Agni, who is united with the waters and is lord of the plants, may Jātavedas grant us rain, breath, and immortality for our offspring from the sky.
प्रजापतिः सलिलादा समुद्रादाप ईरयन्न् उदधिमर्दयाति । प्र प्यायतां वृष्णो अश्वस्य रेतोऽर्वान् एतेन स्तनयित्नुनेहि
Prajāpati, moving the waters from the ocean, stirs the sea; let the seed of the mighty stallion swell forth; let the thunderer make it rain with this.
अपो निषिञ्चन्न् असुरः पिता नः श्वसन्तु गर्गरा अपां वरुणाव नीचीरपः सृज । वदन्तु पृश्निबाहवो मण्डूका इरिणानु
The Asura, our father, pours down the waters; let the deep pools breathe, let Varuṇa and the waters release the streams; let the croaking frogs speak in the dry land.
संवत्सरं शशयाना ब्राह्मणा व्रतचारिणः । वाचं पर्जन्यजिन्वितां प्र मण्डूका अवादिषुः
For a year, the Brahmins, observing their vows, have remained silent; now, enlivened by the rain, the frogs have begun to speak.
उपप्रवद मण्डूकि वर्षमा वद तादुरि । मध्ये ह्रदस्य प्लवस्व विगृह्य चतुरः पदः
Speak up, O frog, call for rain, O Tādurī; swim in the middle of the pond, spreading out your four legs.
खण्वखा३ खैमखा३ मध्ये तदुरि । वर्षं वनुध्वं पितरो मरुतां मन इच्छत
Khaṇvakhā, Khaimakhā, in the middle, O Tādurī; call for rain, O fathers, desire the favor of the Maruts.
महान्तं कोशमुदचाभि षिञ्च सविद्युतं भवतु वातु वातः । तन्वतां यज्ञं बहुधा विसृष्टा आनन्दिनीरोषधयो भवन्तु
Pour out the great vessel, let the wind blow with lightning; let the offerings be made in many ways; let the herbs become joyful with water.
बृहन्न् एषामधिष्ठाता अन्तिकादिव पश्यति । य स्तायन् मन्यते चरन्त्सर्वं देवा इदं विदुः
He who is the great overseer sees as if from nearby; whoever thinks he is hidden while moving, all the gods know him.
यस्तिष्ठति चरति यश्च वञ्चति यो निलायं चरति यः प्रतङ्कम् । द्वौ संनिषद्य यन् मन्त्रयेते राजा तद्वेद वरुणस्तृतीयः
Whoever stands, moves, deceives, or goes to his dwelling, or travels abroad—when two sit together and plot, King Varuṇa, the third, knows it.
उतेयं भूमिर्वरुणस्य राज्ञ उतासौ द्यौर्बृहती दूरेअन्ता । उतो समुद्रौ वरुणस्य कुक्षी उतास्मिन्न् अल्प उदके निलीनः
This earth belongs to King Varuṇa, and so does that vast sky far away; the oceans are Varuṇa's wombs, and even one hidden in a small pool is within him.
उत यो द्यामतिसर्पात्परस्तान् न स मुच्यातै वरुणस्य राज्ञः । दिव स्पशः प्र चरन्तीदमस्य सहस्राक्षा अति पश्यन्ति भूमिम्
Even one who crosses beyond the sky cannot escape King Varuṇa; his thousand-eyed spies move about, seeing all the earth.
सर्वं तद्राजा वरुणो वि चष्टे यदन्तरा रोदसी यत्परस्तात्। संख्याता अस्य निमिषो जनानामक्षान् इव श्वघ्नी नि मिनोति तानि
King Varuṇa sees all that is between heaven and earth and beyond; he counts the blinking of people, just as a gambler counts his dice.
