The waters, primeval, bearing all as a womb, immortal, knowing the truth; in whom the divine one was established among the goddesses—to which god shall we offer our oblation?
The golden embryo arose at the beginning, the sole lord born of beings; he upheld the earth and the heavens—to which god shall we offer our oblation?
The waters, at first, bore the calf, the embryo, and united together; for him, as he was being born, there was a golden covering—to which god shall we offer our oblation?
Three rose up, the tiger, the man, the wolf; swiftly the rivers flow, swiftly the god of the forest, swiftly let the enemies depart.
Let the wolf go by the distant path, let the thief go by the highest way; let the rope given go far, let the evil-doer depart far away.
Your eyes and your mouth, O tiger, we subdue; all your twenty claws.
The tiger, first, we subdue; then the thief, then the serpent, then the demon, then the wolf.
Whoever comes today as a thief, let him be crushed and depart; let Indra destroy him with the thunderbolt, by the path of the outcast.
The head of the beast, the teeth are broken, the backs are torn; let the monitor lizard be hidden, let the deer lie low.
What is restraint is not restraint, what is not restraint is restraint; born of Indra, born of Soma, I am Atharvan's tiger-subduing spell.
That plant which the Gandharva dug up for Varuna, for the dead; that plant we dig up for you, the herb that brings joy and releases bonds.
Rise up, rise up, O Sun, rise up, my speech; let Prajapati rise up, the bull, with vigor and strength.
Just as, from the root, you are not scorched like something burned, so may this herb make you more vigorous.
The potent essence of herbs, the strength of the bulls—Indra, place that virility of men here in the one who controls his body.
The sap of waters, first-born, and of the trees—also, you are the brother of Soma, and you are the virility of the stallion.
Today, O Agni, today, O Savitar, today, O divine Sarasvati, today, O Brahmanaspati—stretch out the fetter like a bowstring.
I loosen your fetter as one loosens the bowstring on a bow, like a red deer stepping forth, always without exhaustion.
The strength of the horse, mule, goat, ram, and also of the bull—place all that vigor here in the one who controls his body.
The thousand-horned bull who rose up from the ocean—with that mighty one, we lull all people to sleep.
The wind does not blow over the earth, nor does anyone see beyond; lull all women to sleep, O Indra's friend, as you move about.
Let those women who lie on the floor, who lie on the couch, those who are to be carried away, those with auspicious fragrance—let us lull all of them to sleep.
The moving, the unmoving, the grasp of sight and breath, the grasp of all limbs—I surpass all the nights, O most dark one.
Whoever sits, whoever moves, whoever stands and sees—of them we close the eyes, just as this house is closed.
Let the mother sleep, let the father sleep, let the dog sleep, let the lord of the house sleep; let her relatives sleep, let all the people around her sleep.
O Sleep, with your sleep-bringing power, lull all people to rest; lull away others to the sun, let only me remain awake, unharmed and unwearied like Indra.
The Brahman was born first, with ten heads and ten faces; he first drank Soma, he made poison without taste.
As far as heaven and earth extend, as far as the seven rivers stretch—this speech, the defiler of poison, I have spoken forth from here.
The eagle, Garutmat, first carried you, O poison; you did not reach the mouth, nor the limb, and you did not become part of the father.
He who sits with five fingers, even crooked from the bow—of the splinter, I have spoken out the poison.
From the splinter I have spoken out the poison, from the reed and from the leaf; from the bone, from the horn, from the lump, I have spoken out the poison.
