सहृदयं सांमनस्यमविद्वेषं कृणोमि वः । अन्यो अन्यमभि हर्यत वत्सं जातमिवाघ्न्या
I make you of one heart and of one mind, free from enmity; let each one love the other as a cow loves her newborn calf.
अनुव्रतः पितुः पुत्रो मात्रा भवतु संमनाः । जाया पत्ये मधुमतीं वाचं वदतु शन्तिवाम्
Let the son be devoted to the father, let him be of one mind with the mother; let the wife speak gentle words to her husband, bringing peace.
मा भ्राता भ्रातरं द्विक्षन् मा स्वसारमुत स्वसा । सम्यञ्चः सव्रता भूत्वा वाचं वदत भद्रया
Let not brother hate brother, nor sister hate sister; being united in purpose and vow, speak words of kindness.
येन देवा न वियन्ति नो च विद्विषते मिथः । तत्कृण्मो ब्रह्म वो गृहे संज्ञानं पुरुषेभ्यः
By which the gods are not divided, nor do they hate one another—may we make that sacred power in your house, understanding among men.
ज्यायस्वन्तश्चित्तिनो मा वि यौष्ट संराधयन्तः सधुराश्चरन्तः । अन्यो अन्यस्मै वल्गु वदन्त एत सध्रीचीनान् वः संमनसस्क्र्णोमि
Let the elders, wise in thought, not fall apart; let them strive together, moving with one purpose; let each speak kindly to the other—thus I make you of one mind.
समानी प्रपा सह वोऽन्नभागः समाने योक्त्रे सह वो युनज्मि । सम्यञ्चोऽग्निं सपर्यतारा नाभिमिवाभितः
Your drinking is the same, your share of food is the same; I yoke you together to one yoke. Worship Agni with united minds, as spokes around a hub.
सध्रीचीनान् वः संमनसस्कृणोम्येकश्नुष्टीन्त्संवननेन सर्वान् । देवा इवामृतं रक्षमाणाः सायंप्रातः सौमनसो वो अस्तु
I make you all united in purpose and of one mind, all of you together in harmony, like the gods guarding the immortal; may you be of good mind in the evening and in the morning.
वि देवा जरसावृतन् वि त्वमग्ने अरात्या । व्यहं सर्वेण पाप्मना वि यक्ष्मेण समायुषा
O gods, drive away old age; O Agni, drive away hostility; drive away all sin, drive away wasting disease and shortened life.
व्यार्त्या पवमानो वि शक्रः पापकृत्यया । व्यहं सर्वेण पाप्मना वि यक्ष्मेण समायुषा
The purifying one, the mighty, drives away hostility, drives away sinful action; drive away all sin, drive away wasting disease and shortened life.
वि ग्राम्याः पशव आरण्यैर्व्यापस्तृष्णयासरन् । व्यहं सर्वेण पाप्मना वि यक्ष्मेण समायुषा
Let the domestic animals be separated from the wild, let thirst depart far away; drive away all sin, drive away wasting disease and shortened life.
वी मे द्यावापृथिवी इतो वि पन्थानो दिशंदिशम् । व्यहं सर्वेण पाप्मना वि यक्ष्मेण समायुषा
May heaven and earth be apart from me here, may the paths go in every direction; drive away all sin, drive away wasting disease and shortened life.
त्वष्टा दुहित्रे वहतुं युनक्तीतीदं विश्वं भुवनं वि याति । व्यहं सर्वेण पाप्मना वि यक्ष्मेण समायुषा
Tvaṣṭṛ joins the daughter to the husband, thus all the world goes forth; drive away all sin, drive away wasting disease and shortened life.
अग्निः प्राणान्त्सं दधाति चन्द्रः प्राणेन संहितः । व्यहं सर्वेण पाप्मना वि यक्ष्मेण समायुषा
Agni holds the breaths together, the moon is joined with the breath; drive away all sin, drive away wasting disease and shortened life.
प्राणेन विश्वतोवीर्यं देवाः सूर्यं समैरयन् । व्यहं सर्वेण पाप्मना वि यक्ष्मेण समायुषा
With breath, the gods set in motion the all-pervading energy, the sun; drive away all sin, drive away wasting disease and shortened life.
आयुष्मतामायुष्कृतां प्राणेन जीव मा मृथाः । व्यहं सर्वेण पाप्मना वि यक्ष्मेण समायुषा
With breath, among those who have life and those who give life, live, do not die; drive away all sin, drive away wasting disease and shortened life.
प्राणेन प्राणतां प्राणेहैव भव मा मृथाः । व्यहं सर्वेण पाप्मना वि यक्ष्मेण समायुषा
With breath, among the living, remain here in breath, do not die; drive away all sin, drive away wasting disease and shortened life.
उदायुषा समायुषोदोषधीनां रसेन । व्यहं सर्वेण पाप्मना वि यक्ष्मेण समायुषा
With the sap of the plants, with long life and full life; drive away all sin, drive away wasting disease and shortened life.
आ पर्जन्यस्य वृष्ट्योदस्थामामृता वयम् । व्यहं सर्वेण पाप्मना वि यक्ष्मेण समायुषा
May we stand under the rain of Parjanya, immortal; drive away all sin, drive away wasting disease and shortened life.
4.1 ब्रह्म जज्ञानं प्रथमं पुरस्ताद्वि सीमतः सुरुचो वेन आवः । स बुध्न्या उपमा अस्य विष्ठाः सतश्च योनिमसतश्च वि वः
Brahman was born first, in the beginning, before all; from him, the shining one, the radiant hymn spread forth. His deep foundations are the models of this world, the womb of being and non-being.
इयं पित्र्या राष्ट्र्येत्वग्रे प्रथमाय जनुषे भुवनेष्ठाः । तस्मा एतं सुरुचं ह्वारमह्यं घर्मं श्रीणन्तु प्रथमाय धास्यवे
This ancestral domain was first, established for the first-born in the worlds; therefore, let them spread this shining, inviting, and glorious heat for the first to bear.
प्र यो जज्ञे विद्वान् अस्य बन्धुर्विश्वा देवानां जनिमा विवक्ति । ब्रह्म ब्रह्मण उज्जभार मध्यान् नीचैरुच्चैः स्वधा अभि प्र तस्थौ
He who was born, the wise one, the kinsman of this, distinguishes all the births of the gods; Brahman raised up Brahman from the midst, from below and above, standing firm by his own law.
स हि विदः स पृथिव्या ऋतस्था मही क्षेमं रोदसी अस्कभायत्। महान् मही अस्कभायद्वि जातो द्यां सद्म पार्थिवं च रजः
He knows, he stands by the truth of earth; the great one made firm the vast earth and sky; the great one, being born, made firm the sky, the earthly realm, and the space between.
स बुध्न्यादाष्ट्र जनुषोऽभ्यग्रं बृहस्पतिर्देवता तस्य सम्राट्। अहर्यच्छुक्रं ज्योतिषो जनिष्टाथ द्युमन्तो वि वसन्तु विप्राः
From the deep foundation of birth, Bṛhaspati, the lord of the gods, is the sovereign; he produced the shining light of day, and let the inspired ones dwell in radiance.
नूनं तदस्य काव्यो हिनोति महो देवस्य पूर्व्यस्य धाम । एष जज्ञे बहुभिः साकमित्था पूर्वे अर्धे विषिते ससन् नु
Indeed, his poetic power strikes this, the great abode of the ancient god; he was born together with many, thus the former halves were divided.
योऽथर्वाणं पितरं देवबन्धुं बृहस्पतिं नमसाव च गछात्। त्वं विश्वेषां जनिता यथासः कविर्देवो न दभायत्स्वधावान्
He who approaches Atharvan, the father, the divine kinsman, and Brihaspati with reverence; you are the creator of all as you are, the wise god, never to be harmed, self-sustaining.
य आत्मदा बलदा यस्य विश्व उपासते प्रशिषं यस्य देवाः । योऽस्येशे द्विपदो यश्चतुष्पदः कस्मै देवाय हविषा विधेम
He who gives self and strength, whose command all worship, whose guidance the gods follow; who rules over both two-footed and four-footed beings—to which god shall we offer our oblation?
यः प्राणतो निमिषतो महित्वैको राजा जगतो बभूव । यस्य छायामृतं यस्य मृत्युः कस्मै देवाय हविषा विधेम
He who alone, living and blinking, became the great king of the world; whose shadow is immortality, whose shadow is death—to which god shall we offer our oblation?
यं क्रन्दसी अवतश्चस्कभाने भियसाने रोदसी अह्वयेथाम् । यस्यासौ पन्था रजसो विमानः कस्मै देवाय हविषा विधेम
He whom the two crying ones, trembling, called from below, whom heaven and earth invoked in fear; whose path is the shining way of space—to which god shall we offer our oblation?
यस्य द्यौरुर्वी पृथिवी च मही यस्याद उर्वन्तरिक्षम् । यस्यासौ सूरो विततो महित्वा कस्मै देवाय हविषा विधेम
He whose vast heaven and earth, whose broad atmosphere, whose greatness the sun spreads out—to which god shall we offer our oblation?
यस्य विश्वे हिमवन्तो महित्वा समुद्रे यस्य रसामिदाहुः । इमाश्च प्रदिशो यस्य बाहू कस्मै देवाय हविषा विधेम
He whose greatness the Himalayas, whose greatness the oceans declare; whose arms are these directions—to which god shall we offer our oblation?
