एवा महान् बृहद्दिवो अथर्वावोचत्स्वां तन्वमिन्द्रमेव । स्वसारौ मातरिभ्वरी अरिप्रे हिन्वन्ति चैने शवसा वर्धयन्ति च
Thus the great Atharvan of the vast heaven has spoken of you, Indra, as your very self. The two sisters, Mātariśvan and Bhavarī, urge you on and by their strength cause you to grow.
चित्रं देवानां केतुरनीकं ज्योतिष्मान् प्रदिशः सूर्य उद्यन् । दिवाकरोऽति द्युम्नैस्तमांसि विश्वातारीद्दुरितानि शुक्रः
A wondrous sign of the gods, a radiant form, the Sun rises in all directions. The maker of day, surpassing in glory, dispels all darkness; the shining one drives away every evil.
चित्रं देवानामुदगादनीकं चक्षुर्मित्रस्य वरुणस्याग्नेः । आप्राद्द्यावापृथिवी अन्तरिक्षं सूर्य आत्मा जगतस्तस्थुषश्च
A wondrous form of the gods has arisen, the eye of Mitra, Varuṇa, and Agni. The Sun has filled heaven and earth and the atmosphere; he is the soul of all that moves and stands.
सूर्यो देवीमुषसं रोचमानां मर्यो न योषामभ्येति पश्चात्। यत्रा नरो देवयन्तो युगानि वितन्वते प्रति भद्राय भद्रम्
The Sun, like a young man approaching a maiden, comes after the shining dawn. There, men devoted to the gods stretch out the ages, answering good with good.
त्वं न इन्द्रा भरमोजो नृम्णं शतक्रतो विचर्षणे । आ वीरं पृतनाषहम्
You, O Indra, are our strength and manliness, O hundred-powered, wise among men. Bring us the hero who conquers in battle.
त्वं हि नः पिता वसो त्वं माता शतक्रतो बभूविथ । अधा ते सुम्नमीमहे
You are our father, O gracious one; you are our mother, O hundred-powered. Therefore we seek your favor.
त्वां शुष्मिन् पुरुहूत वाजयन्तमुप ब्रुवे शतक्रतो । स नो रास्व सुवीर्यम्
To you, O much-invoked, mighty Indra, I call, who wins the prize. Grant us heroic strength.
स्वादोरित्था विषूवतो मध्वः पिबन्ति गौर्यः । या इन्द्रेण सयावरीर्वृष्णा मदन्ति शोभसे वस्वीरनु स्वराज्यम्
Sweetly, at the meeting place, the cows drink the honeyed draught. They, together with Indra, the mighty, rejoice; shining ones, they follow the rule of sovereignty.
ता अस्य पृशनायुवः सोमं श्रीणन्ति पृश्नयः । प्रिया इन्द्रस्य धेनवो वज्रं हिन्वन्ति सायकं वस्वीरनु स्वराज्यम्
These, the speckled ones, prepare Soma for him; the Prishni cows, beloved of Indra, urge on the thunderbolt and arrow, shining ones, they follow the rule of sovereignty.
ता अस्य नमसा सहः सपर्यन्ति प्रचेतसः । व्रतान्यस्य सश्चिरे पुरूणि पूर्वचित्तये वस्वीरनु स्वराज्यम्
With reverence and strength, these wise ones serve him. They have observed his many ancient vows, shining ones, they follow the rule of sovereignty.
इन्द्राय मदूने सुतं परि ष्टोभन्तु नो गिरः । अर्कमर्चन्तु कारवः
Let our songs resound for Indra, for whom the Soma has been pressed. Let the poets praise him with hymns.
यस्मिन् विश्वा अधि श्रियो रणन्ति सप्त संसदः । इन्द्रं सुते हवामहे
In whom all riches abide, where the seven gatherings rejoice— we call upon Indra at the pressing of the Soma.
त्रिकद्रुकेषु चेतनं देवासो यज्ञमत्नत । तमिद्वर्धन्तु नो गिरः
At the Trikadruka festival, the gods have honored the conscious one with sacrifice. Let our songs magnify him.
यत्सोममिन्द्र विष्णवि यद्वा घ त्रित आप्त्ये । यद्वा मरुत्सु मन्दसे समिन्दुभिः
Whatever Soma, O Indra, you have enjoyed with Viṣṇu, or with Trita Āptya, or with the Maruts—
यद्वा शक्र परावति समुद्रे अधि मन्दसे । अस्माकमित्सुते रणा समिन्दुभिः
Or, O mighty one, whatever you have enjoyed on the distant ocean, may you rejoice in our pressed Soma with the drops.
यद्वासि सुन्वतो वृधो यजमानस्य सत्पते । उक्थे वा यस्य रण्यसि समिन्दुभिः
Or whatever you are, O supporter of the sacrificer, at the pressing of the Soma, or when you delight in the hymn— may you rejoice in our pressed Soma with the drops.
यदद्य कच्च वृत्रहन्न् उदगा अभि सूर्य । सर्वं तदिन्द्र ते वशे
O slayer of Vṛtra, whatever has arisen today, even the sun in the sky— all this, O Indra, is under your control.
यद्वा प्रवृद्ध सत्पते न मरा इति मन्यसे । उतो तत्सत्यमित्तव
Or if, O Lord of the good, you think, 'I am not to be overcome,' then indeed, that is the truth, O mighty one.
ये सोमासः परावति ये अर्वावति सुन्विरे । सर्वांस्तामिन्द्र गच्छसि
All the Somas that are pressed far away and those that are pressed nearby— you, Indra, reach all of them.
उभयं शृणवच्च न इन्द्रो अर्वागिदं वचः । सत्राच्या मघवा सोमपीतये धिया शविष्ठ आ गमत्
Indra, listen to both sides; come near to this speech. Let the generous one come together with wisdom, O most powerful, for the drinking of Soma.
तं हि स्वराजं वृषभं तमोजसे धिषणे निष्टतक्षतुः । उतोपमानां प्रथमो नि षीदसि सोमकामं हि ते मनः
For him, the self-luminous, the bull, the two goddesses have fashioned a seat for strength; and you, foremost among models, take your place, for your mind desires Soma.
अभ्रातृव्योऽना त्वमनापिरिन्द्र जनुषा सनादसि । युधेदापित्वमिच्छसे
You are without a rival, without a peer, O Indra, by birth from the beginning; you desire to win in battle.
नकी रेवन्तं सख्याय विन्दसे पीयन्ति ते सुराश्वः । यदा कृणोषि नदनुं समूहस्यादित्पितेव हूयसे
You do not find a wealthy friend for friendship; your splendid horses drink. When you perform your mighty deed, you are invoked like a father at the gathering.
अहमिद्धि पितुष्परि मेधामृतस्य जग्रभ । अहं सूर्य इवाजनि
Indeed, I have grasped the wisdom of the immortal from my father; I was born like the sun.
अहं प्रत्नेन मन्मना गिरः शुम्भामि कण्ववत्। येनेन्द्रः शुष्ममिद्दधे
With ancient thought, I adorn the hymns like the Kanvas, by which Indra gained his strength.
ये त्वामिन्द्र न तुष्टुवुर्ऋषयो ये च तुष्टुवुः । ममेद्वर्धस्व सुष्टुतः
Those seers who did not praise you, Indra, and those who did— may you grow for me, well-praised one.
मा भूम निष्ट्या इवेन्द्र त्वदरणा इव । वनानि नि प्रजहितान्यद्रिवो दुरोषासो अमन्महि
Let us not, O Indra, become like those cast out, like those without shelter; O crusher of foes, may we not be rejected like forests. Let us not be far from your favor.
अमन्महीदनाशवोऽनुग्रासश्च वृत्रहन् । सुकृत्सु ते महता शूर राधसानु स्तोमं मुदीमहि
May we not be powerless, O slayer of Vṛtra, nor subject to others; among the good, O mighty hero, with your great bounty, may we joyfully offer praise.
पिबा सोममिन्द्र मन्दतु त्वा यं ते सुषाव हर्यश्वाद्रिः । सोतुर्बाहुभ्यां सुयतो नार्वा
Drink the Soma, Indra, let it delight you— the Soma which the stone has pressed for you, O lover of horses; the well-guided one, pressed by the presser's arms.
यस्ते मदो युजस्चारुरस्ति येन वृत्राणि हर्यश्व हंसि । स त्वामिन्द्र प्रभूवसो ममत्तु
That exhilaration of yours, which is yoked and lovely, by which, O lover of horses, you slay the Vṛtras— may that, O Indra, of abundant wealth, intoxicate you.
