यस्तिग्मशृङ्गो वृषभो न भीमः एकः कृष्टीश्च्यवयति प्र विश्वाः । यः शश्वतो अदाशुषो गयस्य प्रयन्तासि सुष्वितराय वेदः
He who, like a bull with sharp horns, is fearsome, who alone stirs all peoples—he who ever leads the eager to life, the wise one, for the well-off, knows the way.
त्वं ह त्यदिन्द्र कुत्समावः शुश्रूषमाणस्तन्वा समर्ये । दासं यच्शुष्णं कुयवं न्यस्मा अरन्धय आर्जुनेयाय शिक्षन्
You, Indra, helped Kutsa in battle, listening to him with your own body; you subdued the Dasa Shushna and Kuyava, and granted victory to Arjuneya.
त्वं धृष्णो धृषता वीतहव्यं प्रावो विश्वाभिरूतिभिः सुदासम् । प्र पौरुकुत्सिं त्रसदस्युमावः क्षेत्रसाता वृत्रहत्येषु पूरुम्
You, O bold one, with your boldness, led Sudas, who called upon you, with all aids; you helped Paurukutsa and Trasadasyu, and Puru, in winning land and slaying Vritra.
त्वं नृभिर्नृमणो देववीतौ भूरीणि वृत्रा हर्यश्व हंसि । त्वं नि दस्युं चुमुरिं धुनिं चास्वापयो दभीतये सुहन्तु
You, among men, O manly one, in the worship of the gods, have slain many Vritras, O Indra of the tawny steeds; you cast down the Dasyu, Cumuri, and Dhuni, making them sleep for the sake of the friend.
तव च्यौत्नानि वज्रहस्त तानि नव यत्पुरो नवतिं च सद्यः । निवेशने शततमाविवेषीरहं च वृत्रं नमुचिमुताहन्
Your deeds, O bolt-holder, are those by which you overthrew ninety-nine cities at once; in their dwelling you entered the hundredth, and you slew Vritra, Namuci, and Ahi.
सना ता त इन्द्र भोजनानि रातहव्याय दाशुषे सुदासे । वृष्णे ते हरी वृषणा युनज्मि व्यन्तु ब्रह्माणि पुरुशाक वाजम्
These, O Indra, are your ancient gifts, for the worshipper who offers rightly, for Sudas; to the strong you yoke your strong steeds—may the hymns bring abundant prize.
मा ते अस्यां सहसावन् परिष्टावघाय भूम हरिवः परादौ । त्रायस्व नोऽवृकेभिर्वरूथैस्तव प्रियासः सूरिषु स्याम
Let not the mighty one assail you here with violence, O Harivaḥ, at the beginning of the contest. Protect us with your unbroken defenses; may we be dear to the generous among men.
प्रियास इत्ते मघवन्न् अभिष्टौ नरो मदेम शरणे सखायः । नि तुर्वशं नि याद्वं शिशीह्यतिथिग्वाय शंस्यं करिष्यन्
May we, O bountiful one, be dear to you in your favor; let us, your friends, rejoice in your shelter. Subdue Turvaśa and Yadu; grant worthy praise to Atithigva.
सद्यश्चिन् नु ते मघवन्न् अभिष्टौ नरः शंसन्त्युक्थशास उक्था । ये ते हवेभिर्वि पणींरदाशन्न् अस्मान् वृणीष्व युज्याय तस्मै
Even now, O bountiful one, in your favor, men speak forth hymns and praises. Those who, with their invocations, have driven away the miser, choose us for alliance with him.
एते स्तोमा नरां नृतम तुभ्यमस्मद्र्यञ्चो ददतो मघानि । तेषामिन्द्र वृत्रहत्ये शिवो भूः सखा च शूरोऽविता च नृणाम्
These praises of men, O best of men, are for you; they bring gifts to us, O generous one. Among them, O Indra, be gracious in the slaying of Vṛtra; be a friend, a hero, and a protector of men.
नू इन्द्र शूर स्तवमान ऊती ब्रह्मजूतस्तन्वा वावृधस्व । उप नो वाजान् मिमीह्युप स्तीन् यूयं पात स्वस्तिभिः सदा नः
Now, O Indra, heroic one, praised by us, grow strong with the aid of prayer and your own might. Grant us riches, grant us food; may you all always guard us with well-being.
आ याहि सुषुमा हि त इन्द्र सोमं पिबा इमम् । एदं बर्हिः सदो मम
Come hither with delight, O Indra; drink this Soma. This is my seat, my sacred grass.
आ त्वा ब्रह्मयुजा हरी वहतामिन्द्र केशिना । उप ब्रह्माणि नः शृणु
Let your tawny steeds yoked by prayer bring you, O Indra; listen to our hymns.
ब्रह्माणस्त्वा वयं युजा सोमपामिन्द्र सोमिनः । सुतावन्तो हवामहे
With prayer we, the Soma-offerers, invoke you, O Indra, drinker of Soma, when the Soma is pressed.
इन्द्रमिद्गाथिनो बृहदिन्द्रमर्केभिरर्किणः । इन्द्रं वाणीरनूषत
The singers sing of Indra with loud chants; the praisers praise Indra with their hymns; the voices call upon Indra.
इन्द्र इद्धर्योः सचा संमिश्ल आ वचोयुजा । इन्द्रो वज्री हिरण्ययः
Indra, together with the two bay steeds, united, yoked with speech, Indra the wielder of the golden thunderbolt.
इन्द्रो दीर्घाय चक्षस आ सूर्यं रोहयद्दिवि । वि गोभिरद्रिमैरयत्
Indra, with far-seeing vision, made the sun rise in the sky; with the cows he split the rock.
इन्द्रं वो विश्वतस्परि हवामहे जनेभ्यः । अस्माकमस्तु केवलः
We call upon Indra from every direction for the peoples; may he be ours alone.
व्यन्तरिक्षमतिरन् मदे सोमस्य रोचना । इन्द्रो यदभिनद्वलम्
He traversed the midspace with the exhilaration of Soma's radiance, when Indra shattered the enclosure.
उद्गा आजदङ्गिरोभ्य आविष्कृण्वन् गुहा सतीः । अर्वाञ्चं नुनुदे वलम्
He drove upward, as with the Angirases, revealing those who were hidden; he pushed the enclosure forward.
इन्द्रेण रोचना दिवो दृल्हानि दृंहितानि च । स्थिराणि न पराणुदे
By Indra, the shining realms of heaven, the firm and established, are not shaken.
अपामूर्मिर्मदन्न् इव स्तोम इन्द्राजिरायते । वि ते मदा अराजिषुः
Like the exhilaration of water, the praise rushes to Indra for victory; your exhilarations have spread forth.
इन्द्रेण सं हि दृक्षसे संजग्मानो अबिभ्युषा । मन्दू समानवर्चसा
With Indra you see together, coming together unafraid; you are united in equal splendor.
अनवद्यैरभिद्युभिर्मखः सहस्वदर्चति । गणैरिन्द्रस्य काम्यैः
With blameless and shining companions, the festival shines forth in strength, with the desirable hosts of Indra.
आदह स्वधामनु पुनर्गर्भत्वमेरिरे । दधाना नाम यज्ञियम्
They have entered again into the womb, following their own law; upholding the sacrificial name.
इन्द्रो दधीचो अस्थभिर्वृत्राण्यप्रतिष्कुतः । जघान नवतीर्नव
Indra, with the bones of Dadhīci, unconquered, struck down ninety-nine foes.
इच्छन् अश्वस्य यच्छिरः पर्वतेष्वपश्रितम् । तद्विदच्छर्यणावति
Desiring the horse's head, which was hidden among the mountains, he found it, the wondrous one, in the sanctuary.
अत्राह गोरमन्वत नाम त्वष्टुरपीच्यम् । इत्था चन्द्रमसो गृहे
Here they sought the name of the cow, the lower form of Tvaṣṭṛ; thus, in the house of the moon.
वाचमष्टापदीमहं नवस्रक्तिमृतस्पृशम् । इन्द्रात्परि तन्वं ममे
I take up speech with eight steps, new-garlanded, touching immortality, from Indra I draw forth my form.
अनु त्वा रोदसी उभे क्रक्षमाणमकृपेताम् । इन्द्र यद्दस्युहाभवः
Both the worlds, O Indra, followed you as you strode, when you became the slayer of foes.
