Him, our ancient fathers, the Navagvas, the seven sages, glorified, seeking victory; with thoughts they praised the mighty one, who stands on the mountain, whose words are without falsehood.
We seek that Indra, lord of wealth, of many heroes, giver of much, who is ever youthful, ageless, possessor of light; bring him here, O charioteer, to gladden us.
Tell us, Indra, if your singers of old ever brought you favor; what is your share, what strength, what vigor, O much-invoked, rich in gifts, slayer of demons?
She who questions Indra, the wielder of the bolt, standing on the chariot—her voice trembles and quivers; for his grasp is strong, his form is mighty, his giving generous—she seeks to approach the powerful one for gain.
By this power, he who has grown through his own magic, swift-minded, self-reliant, with the mountain—he shatters even the unshaken, breaks the strong, splits the firm with his boldness, the destroyer.
To him, the most powerful, ancient, ever new, let your thoughts turn for protection; may Indra, the good helper, carry us beyond all difficulties.
For the people, kindle the earthly and heavenly fires, and those of the midspace; burn, O bull, with your flame on every side—burn those who hate prayer, and those who harm the earth.
You are the king of the heavenly people, of the earthly world, of all that moves, with fierce vision; take the bolt in your right hand, O Indra—protect us from all harm, defeat all magic.
Bring us, Indra, unbroken welfare for victory over foes; with which you, with the bolt, have subdued the Dasa, the Arya, the Vritra, and the Nahusha.
Come to us, O much-invoked, wise Indra, with your bands, with all gifts, O worthy of worship; with these, which neither godless nor god can withstand, come quickly, delighting in the Soma.
He who, like a bull with sharp horns, is fearsome, who alone stirs all peoples—he who ever leads the eager to life, the wise one, for the well-off, knows the way.
You, Indra, helped Kutsa in battle, listening to him with your own body; you subdued the Dasa Shushna and Kuyava, and granted victory to Arjuneya.
You, O bold one, with your boldness, led Sudas, who called upon you, with all aids; you helped Paurukutsa and Trasadasyu, and Puru, in winning land and slaying Vritra.
You, among men, O manly one, in the worship of the gods, have slain many Vritras, O Indra of the tawny steeds; you cast down the Dasyu, Cumuri, and Dhuni, making them sleep for the sake of the friend.
Your deeds, O bolt-holder, are those by which you overthrew ninety-nine cities at once; in their dwelling you entered the hundredth, and you slew Vritra, Namuci, and Ahi.
These, O Indra, are your ancient gifts, for the worshipper who offers rightly, for Sudas; to the strong you yoke your strong steeds—may the hymns bring abundant prize.
Let not the mighty one assail you here with violence, O Harivaḥ, at the beginning of the contest. Protect us with your unbroken defenses; may we be dear to the generous among men.
May we, O bountiful one, be dear to you in your favor; let us, your friends, rejoice in your shelter. Subdue Turvaśa and Yadu; grant worthy praise to Atithigva.
Even now, O bountiful one, in your favor, men speak forth hymns and praises. Those who, with their invocations, have driven away the miser, choose us for alliance with him.
These praises of men, O best of men, are for you; they bring gifts to us, O generous one. Among them, O Indra, be gracious in the slaying of Vṛtra; be a friend, a hero, and a protector of men.
Now, O Indra, heroic one, praised by us, grow strong with the aid of prayer and your own might. Grant us riches, grant us food; may you all always guard us with well-being.
Come hither with delight, O Indra; drink this Soma. This is my seat, my sacred grass.
Let your tawny steeds yoked by prayer bring you, O Indra; listen to our hymns.
With prayer we, the Soma-offerers, invoke you, O Indra, drinker of Soma, when the Soma is pressed.
The singers sing of Indra with loud chants; the praisers praise Indra with their hymns; the voices call upon Indra.
Indra, together with the two bay steeds, united, yoked with speech, Indra the wielder of the golden thunderbolt.
Indra, with far-seeing vision, made the sun rise in the sky; with the cows he split the rock.
We call upon Indra from every direction for the peoples; may he be ours alone.
He traversed the midspace with the exhilaration of Soma's radiance, when Indra shattered the enclosure.
He drove upward, as with the Angirases, revealing those who were hidden; he pushed the enclosure forward.
