Born and manifest in the lap of his parents, he does not know the origin of another; he who is to be praised by us, who follows our vows, among the gods, that is Indra, O people.
He who desires Soma, the swift-bayed, the wise one, from whom all beings tremble; he who slew Shambara and also Shushna, the sole hero—he, O people, is Indra.
He who, even for the one who presses and cooks, grants the prize—indeed, you are true; may we, O Indra, always dear to you, strong in men, speak forth at the assembly.
To him, indeed, I direct this praise, as an offering, for strength and greatness; with verses, like eager horses, I drive forth hymns for Indra, most generous with prayers.
To him, indeed, like an offering, I bear forth songs, I drive the hymn with my voice, well-praised; for Indra, with heart, with mind, with thought, the ancient lord, let our insights be adorned.
To him, indeed, I bear this supreme, radiant song with my voice; with the greatest words of praise among thoughts, with well-formed hymns, let us magnify the generous one.
To him, indeed, I join the hymn, like a craftsman fitting a chariot for strength; songs and well-formed praises for the singer-loving Indra, for the wise one, all-encompassing.
To him, indeed, like a charioteer for fame, I yoke the hymn for Indra with my tongue; to honor the heroic, bountiful one, the ancient, renowned, law-abiding lord of many cities.
To him, indeed, Tvashtar fashioned the thunderbolt, most skillful, worthy of heaven, for battle; with which, striking even the vital spot of Vritra, the lord, striking, scattered the hosts.
Of him, indeed, at the mother's pressings, at once, he drank the great draught, and the father's nourishing food; Vishnu aided, the stronger, in the cooking, he struck the boar, cast the mountain aside.
To him, indeed, even the goddesses, wives of the gods, sang the hymn to Indra for his great deed; the broad heavens and earth embraced him, wide—none has encompassed his greatness.
Of him, indeed, the greatness has extended forth from heaven and earth and the midspace; Indra, lord of the sun, all-renowned, has taken up the radiance for battle.
Of him, indeed, with his might, Indra cut apart Vritra with the thunderbolt; like cows with calves, he released the waters, eager for fame, with insight.
Of him, indeed, with his force, the rivers rejoice, when with the thunderbolt he confines the stream; granting favor to the worshipper, the lord, the swift, grants depth to the eager Turvani.
To him, indeed, the eager one, I bring forth the thunderbolt for Vritra, the lord, the striker of hosts; he split the joints of the cow, drove them apart, moving the floods to roam the waters.
Of him, indeed, speak forth the ancient deeds of the mighty one, the new with hymns; armed for battle, wielding weapons, he, striving, drives out the enemies.
Of him, indeed, through fear, the firm mountains and the broad heavens tremble at his birth; at the call of the singer, the shelter was joined, at once the inspiration became strength for heroic deeds.
To him, indeed, that is the share among the givers, when, as sole lord, he rules over the many; Indra, striving for the sun, outstripped the rival, for the prize of good horses, with strength.
Thus, O Indra, the Gotamas have composed splendid hymns for you, the delight of chariots. In these, you have placed all-beautiful wisdom; may the generous one swiftly come to us in the morning with wisdom.
He alone, worthy of sacrifice among peoples, is Indra—let us honor him with these songs. He who is the bull, strong in strength, true in being, full of many powers, mighty.
Him, our ancient fathers, the Navagvas, the seven sages, glorified, seeking victory; with thoughts they praised the mighty one, who stands on the mountain, whose words are without falsehood.
We seek that Indra, lord of wealth, of many heroes, giver of much, who is ever youthful, ageless, possessor of light; bring him here, O charioteer, to gladden us.
Tell us, Indra, if your singers of old ever brought you favor; what is your share, what strength, what vigor, O much-invoked, rich in gifts, slayer of demons?
She who questions Indra, the wielder of the bolt, standing on the chariot—her voice trembles and quivers; for his grasp is strong, his form is mighty, his giving generous—she seeks to approach the powerful one for gain.
By this power, he who has grown through his own magic, swift-minded, self-reliant, with the mountain—he shatters even the unshaken, breaks the strong, splits the firm with his boldness, the destroyer.
To him, the most powerful, ancient, ever new, let your thoughts turn for protection; may Indra, the good helper, carry us beyond all difficulties.
For the people, kindle the earthly and heavenly fires, and those of the midspace; burn, O bull, with your flame on every side—burn those who hate prayer, and those who harm the earth.
You are the king of the heavenly people, of the earthly world, of all that moves, with fierce vision; take the bolt in your right hand, O Indra—protect us from all harm, defeat all magic.
Bring us, Indra, unbroken welfare for victory over foes; with which you, with the bolt, have subdued the Dasa, the Arya, the Vritra, and the Nahusha.
Come to us, O much-invoked, wise Indra, with your bands, with all gifts, O worthy of worship; with these, which neither godless nor god can withstand, come quickly, delighting in the Soma.
