Time, indeed, long ago gave birth to what has been and what will be, as a son; from Time arose the Ṛc verses, from Time was born the Yajus.
Time set the sacrifice in order, granting the gods their undiminishing share; in Time are established the Gandharvas and Apsarases, in Time are all the worlds fixed.
In Time stand this god Aṅgiras and Atharvan; this world and the highest world, and the blessed worlds and their supports, all are upheld by Time; having conquered all worlds with Brahman, Time, that supreme god, moves onward.
Night after night, bearing the one who journeys unceasingly, stands like a horse with fodder for him; rejoicing in wealth and food, may we not, O Agni, suffer harm in our dwelling.
That arrow of yours, O Wind, which is of wealth—let it be yours; with that, grant us favor; rejoicing in wealth and food, may we not, O Agni, suffer harm in our dwelling.
Evening by evening, may Agni, the lord of the house, be ours; morning by morning, the giver of good mind; O giver of wealth, become bestower of riches; may we, your kindlers, prosper in body.
Morning by morning, may Agni, the lord of the house, be ours; evening by evening, the giver of good mind; O giver of wealth, become bestower of riches; may we, your kindlers, thrive for a hundred winters.
May I not become one who eats what has been burnt behind; homage to the food-giver, to the lord of food, to Rudra, to Agni; O assembly, protect my assembly, and you who are members of the assembly, protect the assembly.
You, O Indra, much-invoked, pervade all life; day by day, bearing the measured portion, you stand like a horse with fodder, O Agni.
From the world of Yama you have arisen, delighting, O wise one, you unite mortals; alone, you journey with your chariot, knowing, measuring out sleep in the womb of the mighty one.
At first, the binding one saw you in the beginning, before night, at the birth of the day; then, in the midst of sleep, you arose, concealing your form from the healers.
The great cow turned back from the mighty ones to the gods, desiring greatness; to that sleep, the thirty-three gods, the lords of the heavens, assigned lordship.
Neither the ancestors nor the gods know this, among whom the mutterer moves in between; the men, the Ādityas, instructed by Varuṇa, placed sleep in Trita for attainment.
He whose cruel portion the wicked divided, the good, with sleeplessness, obtained blessed life; you are the delight in the highest bond, born from the mind of the one who suffers.
We know all your generations from before, we know you, O Sleep, who are lord here; O glorious one, protect us for fame here, drive away far from us those who hate.
As they join a part, as they join a hoof, as they join a debt, so do we join together all evil dreams, O unlovely one.
The kings have joined, the debtors have joined, the lepers have joined, the parts have joined; whatever evil dream is among us, let us drive out the evil dream, O sinless one.
O embryo of the wives of the gods, O hand of Yama, O auspicious dream, may that which is mine and evil be driven away; let me not meet the face of the owl or the black bird.
We recognize you, O Dream, just so; you are like a dream-horse, like a body-horse, I drive you away. Cast away from us, from our cattle, and from our house, whatever evil dream, whatever belongs to the gods, whatever is dear to the spirits.
Let that which belongs to the gods, that which is dear to the spirits, be released from us like a necklace. Remove from us all evil dreams, all impurity, as one would remove nine gems; all evil dreams we drive away to the enemy.
The offering of ghee, united with the gods, is increased for a year by the oblation. May our hearing, sight, and breath remain unbroken; may we ourselves not be cut off from life or brilliance.
Let breath come to us, let breath call upon us. We invoke breath. Brilliance has taken hold of earth and atmosphere; Soma and Brihaspati bestow brilliance.
Heaven and earth have become the gatherers of brilliance; having taken brilliance, may we move along the earth. The cows, seeking fame, approach the lord of cattle; having taken fame, may we move along the earth.
Build a cattle-pen, for your leaders are men; sew armor, broad and thick. Build strong iron fortresses ahead; let not your well-formed drinking vessels be broken.
With speech as the mouth, with hearing as the ears, with mind, I offer the eye and the source of sacrifice. May the gods, well-disposed, come to this sacrifice spread out by the All-Creator.
Those who are priests of the gods, those who are fit for sacrifice, to whom the offering and share are given—may all those gods, together with their wives, come to this sacrifice and rejoice in strength.
You, Agni, are the guardian of vows among gods and mortals. You are worthy of praise in sacrifices.
If we have transgressed your vows, O gods, knowingly or unknowingly, may Agni, who knows all, make us whole again, and Soma, who has entered the Brahman.
We have gone on the path of the gods; whatever we are able, we strive to follow. Agni, the knower, is the one who sacrifices, the kindler, the priest; he arranges the seasons for the ritual.
Let speech be in my mouth, breath in my nostrils, sight in my eyes, hearing in my ears. Let my hair be ungreyed, my teeth unbroken, and great strength in my arms.
