शम्या ह नाम दधिषे मम दिप्सन्ति ये धना । रात्रीहि तान् असुतपा य स्तेनो न विद्यते यत्पुनर्न विद्यते
You have assumed the name 'peaceful' for me, against those who desire my wealth. O night, drive them away, O sleepless one—where the thief is not found, where he is never found again.
भद्रासि रात्रि चमसो न विष्टो विष्वङ्गोरूपं युवतिर्बिभर्षि । चक्षुष्मती मे उशती वपूम्षि प्रति त्वं दिव्या न क्षाममुक्थाः
You are auspicious, O night, like a cup not overturned; you, maiden, bear every form of cattle. Shining one, with sight, you possess beautiful forms; you do not abandon the earth, like the sky.
यो अद्य स्तेन आयत्यघायुर्मर्त्यो रिपुः । रात्री तस्य प्रतीत्य प्र ग्रीवाः प्र शिरो हनत्
Whoever today is a thief, a wrongdoer, a mortal enemy—night, having encountered him, may she strike his neck, may she strike his head.
प्र पादौ न यथायति प्र हस्तौ न यथाशिषत्। यो मलिम्लुरुपायति स संपिष्टो अपायति । अपायति स्वपायति शुष्के स्थाणावपायति
May his feet not move as they should, may his hands not reach as they wish; whoever moves about in filth, let him be crushed and perish; let him perish, let him perish, let him perish standing on dry wood.
अध रात्रि तृष्टधूममशीर्षाणमहिं कृणु । अक्षौ वृकस्य निर्जह्यास्तेन तं द्रुपदे जहि
Now, O night, make the three-smoked, headless serpent powerless; break the wolf’s dice, and strike down the thief in the thicket.
ये ते रात्र्यनड्वाहस्तीक्ष्णशृङ्गाः स्वाशवः । तेभिर्नो अद्य पारयाति दुर्गाणि विश्वहा
Those of yours, O night, who are oxen, with sharp horns, with strong teeth—by them today, lead us across all dangers, O all-conquering one.
रात्रिंरात्रिमरिष्यन्तस्तरेम तन्वा वयम् । गम्भीरमप्लवा इव न तरेयुररातयः
Night after night, surviving, may we cross over with our bodies; as those who cannot be drowned cross deep waters, so may enemies not cross over us.
यथा शाम्याकः प्रपतन्न् अपवान् नानुविद्यते । एवा रात्रि प्र पातय यो अस्मामभ्यघायति
Just as a withered stalk, falling, is not followed by the wind, so, O night, cast down him who seeks to harm us.
अप स्तेनं वासयो गोअजमुत तस्करम् । अथो यो अर्वतः शिरोऽभिधाय निनीषति
Drive away the thief, the cattle-stealer, and the robber; and also him who, aiming at the horse’s head, seeks to take it away.
यदद्य रात्रि सुभगे विभजन्त्ययो वसु । यदेतदस्मान् भोजय यथेदन्यान् उपायसि
Whatever wealth, O gracious night, is being divided today, whatever you feed us with, as you do with others—
उषसे नः परि देहि सर्वान् रात्र्यनागसः । उषा नो अह्ने आ भजादहस्तुभ्यं विभावरि
Give us to the dawn, O night, all unharmed; may dawn share out the day for us, O radiant one, for you are without hands.
अयुतोऽहमयुतो म आत्मायुतं मे चक्षुरयुतं मे श्रोत्रम् । अयुतो मे प्राणोऽयुतो मेऽपानोऽयुतो मे व्यानोऽयुतोऽहं सर्वः
I am ten thousand, my self is ten thousand, my eye is ten thousand, my ear is ten thousand; my breath is ten thousand, my outgoing breath is ten thousand, my diffused breath is ten thousand; I am all, ten thousand.
देवस्य त्वा सवितुः प्रसवेऽश्विनोर्बाहुभ्यां पूष्णो हस्ताभ्यां प्रसूत आ रभे
I take hold of you, born from the impulse of the divine Savitar, from the arms of the Ashvins, from the hands of Pushan.
कामस्तदग्रे समवर्तत मनसो रेतः प्रथमं यदासीत्। स काम कामेन बृहता सयोनी रायस्पोषं यजमानाय धेहि
Desire arose in the beginning, the first seed of mind that was; O Desire, united with the great Desire, of one womb, grant prosperity and wealth to the worshipper.
त्वं काम सहसासि प्रतिष्ठितो विभुर्विभावा सख आ सखीयते । त्वमुग्रः पृतनासु ससहिः सह ओजो यजमानाय धेहि
You, Desire, are established with force, all-pervading, manifesting in many forms, a friend to friends; you are mighty in battles, grant strength to the worshipper.
दूराच्चकमानाय प्रतिपाणायाक्षये । आस्मा अशृण्वन्न् आशाः कामेनाजनयन्त्स्वः
For the one longing from afar, for the one seeking, for the undiminishing, hopes have listened; with Desire, they have generated their own light.
कामेन मा काम आगन् हृदयाद्धृदयं परि । यदमीषामदो मनस्तदैतूप मामिह
Let Desire come to me from heart to heart; whatever exhilaration or thought is among these people, let that come to me here.
यत्काम कामयमाना इदं कृण्मसि ते हविः । तन् नः सर्वं समृध्यतामथैतस्य हविषो वीहि स्वाहा
Whatever act we perform here, desiring Desire, this is your offering; may all of it prosper for us, and may you accept this offering—svaha.
कालो अश्वो वहति सप्तरश्मिः सहस्राक्षो अजरो भूरिरेताः । तमा रोहन्ति कवयो विपश्चितस्तस्य चक्रा भुवनानि विश्वा
Time, the horse with seven rays, carries all; with a thousand eyes, ageless, mighty, he bears these beings. Upon him ascend the wise and discerning; his wheels are all the worlds.
सप्त चक्रान् वहति काल एष सप्तास्य नाभीरमृतं न्वक्षः । स इमा विश्वा भुवनान्यञ्जत्कालः स ईयते प्रथमो नु देवः
This Time carries seven wheels, has seven mouths, his navel is immortal, his axis is eternal; he moves all these worlds, Time, the first god, indeed advances.
पूर्णः कुम्भोऽधि काल आहितस्तं वै पश्यामो बहुधा नु सन्तम् । स इमा विश्वा भुवनानि प्रत्यङ्कालं तमाहुः परमे व्योमन्
A full jar is placed upon Time; we see him existing in many forms. He moves all these worlds; they call that Time the highest heaven.
स एव सं भुवनान्याभरत्स एव सं भुवनानि पर्यैत्। पिता सन्न् अभवत्पुत्र एषां तस्माद्वै नान्यत्परमस्ति तेजः
He alone has taken up all the worlds; he alone has gone around all the worlds. He became the father and the son of these; therefore, there is no greater brilliance than he.
कालोऽमूं दिवमजनयत्काल इमाः पृथिवीरुत । काले ह भूतं भव्यं चेषितं ह वि तिष्ठते
Time generated this heaven; Time, indeed, this earth. In Time, the past and future and all actions stand firm.
कालो भूतिमसृजत काले तपति सूर्यः । काले ह विश्वा भूतानि काले चक्षुर्वि पश्यति
Time created beings; in Time the sun burns. In Time, all beings exist; in Time the eye sees.
काले मनः काले प्राणः काले नाम समाहितम् । कालेन सर्वा नन्दन्त्यागतेन प्रजा इमाः
In Time is mind, in Time is breath, in Time is the gathered name. By Time, all these creatures rejoice when he arrives.
काले तपः काले ज्येष्ठं काले ब्रह्म समाहितम् । कालो ह सर्वस्येश्वरो यः पितासीत्प्रजापतेः
In Time is austerity, in Time is supremacy, in Time is the gathered Brahman. Time is the lord of all, who became the father of Prajapati.
तेनेषितं तेन जातं तदु तस्मिन् प्रतिष्ठितम् । कालो ह ब्रह्म भूत्वा बिभर्ति परमेष्ठिनम्
By him is everything impelled, by him is everything born, in him is everything established. Time, having become Brahman, upholds the supreme lord.
कालः प्रजा असृजत कालो अग्रे प्रजापतिम् । स्वयंभूः कश्यपः कालात्तपः कालादजायत
Time created the creatures; in the beginning, Time created Prajapati. The self-born Kashyapa arose from Time, and austerity from Time.
कालादापः समभवन् कालाद्ब्रह्म तपो दिशः । कालेनोदेति सूर्यः काले नि विशते पुनः
From Time arose the waters, from Time Brahman, austerity, and the directions. By Time the sun rises, and in Time he sets again.
कालेन वातः पवते कालेन पृथिवी मही । द्यौर्मही काल आहिता
By Time the wind blows, by Time the great earth stands firm. The great sky is established in Time.
