भगो मा भगेनावतु प्राणायापानायायुषे वर्चस ओजसे । तेजसे स्वस्तये सुभूतये स्वाहा
May Bhaga protect me with his favor—for breath, for inspiration and expiration, for life, for brilliance, for vigor, for energy, for well-being, for prosperity—svāhā.
मरुतो मा गणैरवन्तु प्राणायापानायुषे वर्चस ओजसे तेजसे । स्वस्तये सुभूतये स्वाहा
May the Maruts protect me with their hosts—for breath, for inspiration and expiration, for life, for brilliance, for vigor, for energy, for well-being, for prosperity—svāhā.
19.46 प्रजापतिष्ट्वा बध्नात्प्रथममस्तृतं वीर्याय कम् । तत्ते बध्नाम्यायुषे वर्चस ओजसे च बलाय चास्तृतस्त्वाभि रक्षतु
Prajāpati binds you first, the untied one, for strength; I bind you for life, for brilliance, for vigor, and for power; may the untied one protect you.
ऊर्ध्वस्तिष्ठतु रक्षन्न् अप्रमादमस्तृतेमं मा त्वा दभन् पणयो यातुधानाः । इन्द्र इव दस्यून् अव धूनुष्व पृतन्यतः सर्वां छत्रून् वि षहस्वास्तृतस्त्वाभि रक्षतु
May the untied one stand upright, protecting without fail; let neither traders nor sorcerers harm you; as Indra shakes off enemies, drive away all adversaries; may the untied one protect you.
शतं च न प्रहरन्तो निघ्नन्तो न तस्तिरे । तस्मिन्न् इन्द्रः पर्यदत्त चक्षुः प्राणमथो बलमस्तृतस्त्वाभि रक्षतु
A hundred striking and slaying have not overcome us; in that, Indra has placed sight, breath, and also strength; may the untied one protect you.
इन्द्रस्य त्वा वर्मणा परि धापयामो यो देवानामधिराजो बभूव । पुनस्त्वा देवाः प्र णयन्तु सर्वेऽस्तृतस्त्वाभि रक्षतु
We clothe you with Indra's armor, who became the overlord of the gods; may all the gods lead you again; may the untied one protect you.
अस्मिन् मणावेकशतं वीर्याणि सहस्रं प्राणा अस्मिन्न् अस्तृते । व्याघ्रः शत्रून् अभि तिष्ठ सर्वान् यस्त्वा पृतन्यादधरः सो अस्त्वस्तृतस्त्वाभि रक्षतु
In this amulet are a hundred powers, a thousand breaths are contained within it; like a tiger, stand firm against all enemies—may the one who would strike you down be struck down himself, may the amulet protect you.
घृतादुल्लुप्तो मधुमान् पयस्वान्त्सहस्रप्राणः शतयोनिर्वयोधाः । शम्भूश्च मयोभूश्चोर्जस्वांश्च पयस्वांश्चास्तृतस्त्वाभि रक्षतु
Anointed with ghee, sweet with honey, rich with milk, endowed with a thousand breaths, of a hundred origins, a giver of vigor—may the auspicious, the joyful, the strong, the milk-rich amulet protect you.
यथा त्वमुत्तरोऽसो असपत्नः सपत्नहा । सजातानामसद्वशी तथा त्वा सविता करदस्तृतस्त्वाभि रक्षतु
Just as you are superior, without rival, destroyer of rivals, ruler over your kind—so may Savitar make you thus; may the amulet protect you.
आ रात्रि पार्थिवं रजः पितुरप्रायि धामभिः । दिवः सदांसि बृहती वि तिष्ठस आ त्वेषं वर्तते तमः
Night, you extend across the earthly realm, you have approached with your lights; you stand in the great abodes of heaven—your darkness now spreads forth.
न यस्याः पारं ददृशे न योयुवद्विश्वमस्यां नि विशते यदेजति । अरिष्टासस्त उर्वि तमस्वति रात्रि पारमशीमहि भद्रे पारमशीमहि
No one has seen your far shore, nor your youthful form; all enters into you when you move; may we reach your farthest limit unharmed, O night, may we reach your blessed farthest limit.
ये ते रात्रि नृचक्षसो द्रष्टारो नवतिर्नव । अशीतिः सन्त्यष्टा उतो ते सप्त सप्ततिः
Those seers of yours, O night, who are men with vision—ninety and nine are they; eighty and eight, and also seven sevens.
षष्टिश्च षट्च रेवति पञ्चाशत्पञ्च सुम्नयि । चत्वारश्चत्वारिंशच्च त्रयस्त्रिंशच्च वाजिनि
Sixty and six, O radiant one, fifty and five, O gracious one, forty and four, O victorious one, and thirty and three.
द्वौ च ते विंशतिश्च ते रात्र्येकादशावमाः । तेभिर्नो अद्य पायुभिर्नु पाहि दुहितर्दिवः
Two and twenty are yours, O night, and eleven are the last; with these guardians protect us today, O daughter of heaven, protect us now.
रक्षा माकिर्नो अघशंस ईशत मा नो दुःशंस ईशत । मा नो अद्य गवां स्तेनो मावीनां वृक ईशत
Protect us—let not the evil-wisher have power over us, let not the ill-wisher have power over us; let not the thief of cattle, nor the wolf of sheep, have power over us today.
माश्वानां भद्रे तस्करो मा नृणां यातुधान्यः । परमेभिः पथिभि स्तेनो धावतु तस्करः । परेण दत्वती रज्जुः परेणाघायुरर्षतु
Let not the thief of horses, nor the demon among men, have power over us; let the thief run away by distant paths, let the rope given by another bind him, let the evil-doer depart by another way.
अध रात्रि तृष्टधूममशीर्षाणमहिं कृणु । हनू वृकस्य जम्भया स्तेनं द्रुपदे जहि
Now, O night, make the one with three plumes, the headless, powerless; silence the wolf's jaws, strike down the thief in the thicket.
त्वयि रात्रि वसामसि स्वपिष्यामसि जागृहि । गोभ्यो नः शर्म यछाश्वेभ्यः पुरुषेभ्यः
In you, O night, we dwell, in you we shall sleep—be awake; grant us protection for our cattle, for our horses, for our people.
अथो यानि च यस्मा ह यानि चान्तः परीणहि । तानि ते परि दद्मसि
And whatever things are outside, and whatever things are within—encompass them all around; to you we entrust them.
रात्रि मातरुषसे नः परि देहि । उषा नो अह्ने परि ददात्वहस्तुभ्यं विभावरि
Night, mother, surround us for the sake of dawn; may dawn surround us for the sake of day—O radiant one, with your hands.
यत्किं चेदं पतयति यत्किं चेदं सरीसृपम् । यत्किं च पर्वतायासत्वं तस्मात्त्वं रात्रि पाहि नः
Whatever here flies, whatever here creeps, whatever wild thing is in the mountains—from all that, O night, protect us.
सा पश्चात्पाहि सा पुरः सोत्तरादधरादुत । गोपाय नो विभावरि स्तोतारस्त इह स्मसि
Guard us from behind, guard us from before, from the north and from below; protect us, O radiant one, for we are your singers here.
ये रात्रिमनुतिष्ठन्ति ये च भूतेषु जाग्रति । पशून् ये सर्वान् रक्षन्ति ते न आत्मसु जाग्रति ते नः पशुषु जाग्रति
Those who watch through the night, and those who are awake among beings, those who protect all cattle—they are awake over our lives, they are awake over our cattle.
वेद वै रात्रि ते नाम घृताची नाम वा असि । तां त्वां भरद्वाजो वेद सा नो वित्तेऽधि जाग्रति
Truly, O night, your name is known—Ghee-anointed is your name; Bharadvāja knows you—may she, the knower, watch over our wealth.
इषिरा योषा युवतिर्दमूना रात्री देवस्य सवितुर्भगस्य । अश्वक्षभा सुहवा संभृतश्रीरा पप्रौ द्यावापृथिवी महित्वा
The active maiden, the youthful, self-restrained night, belonging to the god Savitar, to Bhaga, with the brightness of a horse, gracious, abounding in splendor, has filled the greatness of heaven and earth.
अति विश्वान्यरुहद्गम्भिरो वर्षिष्ठमरुहन्त श्रविष्ठाः । उशती रात्र्यनु सा भद्राभि तिष्ठते मित्र इव स्वधाभिः
She has surpassed all things, profound, the most lofty, whom the most renowned have not surpassed; the shining night, following her, stands with blessings, like Mitra with his ordinances.
वर्ये वन्दे सुभगे सुजात आजगन् रात्रि सुमना इह स्याम् । अस्मांस्त्रायस्व नर्याणि जाता अथो यानि गव्यानि पुष्ट्या
I praise the excellent, fortunate, well-born night; may I be of good mind here. Protect us from dangers, both those born of men and those arising from cattle and prosperity.
सिंहस्य रात्र्युशती पींषस्य व्याघ्रस्य द्वीपिनो वर्च आ ददे । अश्वस्य ब्रध्नं पुरुषस्य मायुं पुरु रूपाणि कृणुषे विभाती
Night, shining, has taken the strength of the lion, the power of the panther, the brilliance of the tiger and leopard; she has the white of the horse, the vigor of man, and at dawn you create many forms.
शिवां रात्रिमनुसूर्यं च हिमस्य माता सुहवा नो अस्तु । अस्य स्तोमस्य सुभगे नि बोध येन त्वा वन्दे विश्वासु दिक्षु
May the auspicious night, following the sun, mother of the cold, be gracious to us. O fortunate one, be aware of this hymn by which I praise you in all directions.
स्तोमस्य नो विभावरि रात्रि राजेव जोषसे । असाम सर्ववीरा भवाम सर्ववेदसो व्युच्छन्तीरनूषसः
O radiant night, you delight in our hymn as a king does; may we be all-victorious, all-knowing, as you, shining one, pass away at dawn.
