सपत्नक्षयणं दर्भ द्विषतस्तपनं हृदः । मणिं क्षत्रस्य वर्धनं तनूपानं कृणोमि ते
Darbha, you are the destroyer of rivals, the burner of the enemy’s heart, the jewel that increases sovereignty; I make you the drink of the body.
यत्समुद्रो अभ्यक्रन्दत्पर्जन्यो विद्युता सह । ततो हिरण्ययो बिन्दुस्ततो दर्भो अजायत
When the ocean roared together with the storm and lightning, from that arose a golden drop, from that was born the darbha grass.
औदुम्बरेण मणिना पुष्टिकामाय वेधसा । पशूनां सर्वेषां स्फातिं गोष्ठे मे सविता करत्
With the audumbara jewel, for the sake of abundance, may the Creator grant me the increase of all cattle in my cattle-pen.
यो नो अग्निर्गार्हपत्यः पशूनामधिपा असत्। औदुम्बरो वृषा मणिः सं मा सृजतु पुष्ट्या
May the household fire, lord of cattle, be ours; may the audumbara, the bull among jewels, release abundance to us.
करीषिणीं फलवतीं स्वधामिरां च नो गृहे । औदुम्बरस्य तेजसा धाता पुष्टिं दधातु मे
May the one who bears, who is fruitful, who brings nourishment, dwell in my house; by the brilliance of the audumbara, may the Creator grant me abundance.
यद्द्विपाच्च चतुष्पाच्च यान्यन्नानि ये रसाः । गृह्णेऽहं त्वेषां भूमानं बिभ्रदौदुम्बरं मणिम्
Whatever foods and juices there are from two-footed and four-footed beings, I take their fullness, bearing the audumbara jewel.
पुष्टिं पशूनां परि जग्रभाहं चतुष्पदां द्विपदां यच्च धान्यम् । पयः पशूनां रसमोषधीनां बृहस्पतिः सविता मे नि यच्छात्
I have gathered the abundance of cattle, both four-footed and two-footed, and whatever grain there is; may Brihaspati and Savitar grant me the milk of cattle and the essence of plants.
अहं पशूनामधिपा असानि मयि पुष्टं पुष्टपतिर्दधातु । मह्यमौदुम्बरो मणिर्द्रविणानि नि यच्छतु
May I be the lord of cattle; may the lord of abundance establish abundance in me; may the audumbara jewel grant me wealth.
उप मौदुम्बरो मणिः प्रजया च धनेन च । इन्द्रेण जिन्वितो मणिरा मागन्त्सह वर्चसा
May the audumbara jewel come to me with offspring and wealth; may the jewel, inspired by Indra, come to me with strength and splendor.
देवो मणिः सपत्नहा धनसा धनसातये । पशोरन्नस्य भूमानं गवां स्फातिं नि यच्छतु
May the divine jewel, destroyer of rivals, bring us wealth for the gaining of riches; may it grant us the fullness of food and the increase of cows.
यथाग्रे त्वं वनस्पते पुष्ट्या सह जज्ञिषे । एवा धनस्य मे स्फातिमा दधातु सरस्वती
As you, O tree, were born at first together with abundance, so may Sarasvati grant me the increase of wealth.
आ मे धनं सरस्वती पयस्फातिं च धान्यम् । सिनीवाल्युपा वहादयं चौदुम्बरो मणिः
May Sarasvati bring me wealth, abundance of milk, and grain; may Sinivali bring it near, and this audumbara jewel as well.
त्वं मणीणामधिपा वृषासि त्वयि पुष्टं पुष्टपतिर्जजान । त्वयीमे वाजा द्रविणानि सर्वौदुम्बरः स त्वमस्मत्सहस्वारादारादरातिममतिं क्षुधं च
You are the bull among jewels, lord of jewels; in you, the lord of abundance was born; in you are all prizes and riches, O audumbara; so may you conquer for us, drive away misfortune, enmity, and hunger.
ग्रामणीरसि ग्रामणीरुत्थाय अभिषिक्तोऽभि मा सिञ्च वर्चसा । तेजोऽसि तेजो मयि धारयाधि रयिरसि रयिं मे धेहि
You are the leader of the village, rising as chief, anointed—sprinkle me with splendor; you are vigor, may vigor dwell in me; you are wealth, grant me wealth.
पुष्टिरसि पुष्ट्या मा समङ्ग्धि गृहमेधी गृहपतिं मा कृणु । औदुम्बरः स त्वमस्मासु धेहि रयिं च नः सर्ववीरं नि यच्छ रायस्पोषाय प्रति मुञ्चे अहं त्वाम्
You are abundance; may you unite me with abundance; householder, make me the lord of the house; O audumbara, place wealth among us, and grant us all-heroic riches; for the increase of wealth, I release you.
अयमौदुम्बरो मणिर्वीरो वीराय बध्यते । स नः सनिं मधुमतीं कृणोतु रयिं च नः सर्ववीरं नि यच्छात्
This audumbara jewel, heroic, is bound for the hero; may it make for us a sweet alliance, and grant us all-heroic wealth.
शतकाण्डो दुश्च्यवनः सहस्रपर्ण उत्तिरः । दर्भो य उग्र ओषधिस्तं ते बध्नाम्यायुषे
The hundred-jointed, difficult-to-move, thousand-leaved, elevated darbha grass, fierce among herbs—I bind this for you for long life.
नास्य केशान् प्र वपन्ति नोरसि ताडमा घ्नते । यस्मा अछिन्नपर्णेन दर्भेन शर्म यच्छति
Its hairs are not cut, nor is it struck upon the breast; for with its unbroken leaves, darbha grants protection.
दिवि ते तूलमोषधे पृथिव्यामसि निष्ठितः । त्वया सहस्रकाण्डेनायुः प्र वर्धयामहे
In heaven is your tuft, O herb, and you are established on earth; with you, thousand-jointed one, we increase life.
तिस्रो दिवो अत्यतृणत्तिस्र इमाः पृथिवीरुत । त्वयाहं दुर्हार्दो जिह्वां नि तृणद्मि वचांसि
Three you have overstepped in heaven, three here on earth; with you, I subdue the tongue of the ill-willed and their words.
त्वमसि सहमानोऽहमस्मि सहस्वान् । उभौ सहस्वन्तौ भूत्वा सपत्नान् सहिषीवहि
You are enduring, and I am powerful; let us both, being strong, overcome our rivals.
सहस्व नो अभिमातिं सहस्व पृतनायतः । सहस्व सर्वान् दुर्हार्दः सुहार्दो मे बहून् कृधि
Endure for us hostility, endure the onslaught of battle; endure all the ill-willed, and make many friendly to me.
दर्भेण देवजातेन दिवि ष्टम्भेन शश्वदित्। तेनाहं शश्वतो जनामसनं सनवानि च
With the darbha born of the gods, the eternal pillar in heaven—with that, may I always gain food and sustenance for people.
प्रियं मा दर्भ कृणु ब्रह्मराजन्याभ्यां शूद्राय चार्याय च । यस्मै च कामयामहे सर्वस्मै च विपश्यते
Make me dear, O darbha, to the Brahmin, the royal, the Shudra, and the Arya; and to whomever we desire, and to all who see.
यो जायमानः पृथिवीमदृंहद्यो अस्तभ्नादन्तरिक्षं दिवं च । यं बिभ्रतं ननु पाप्मा विवेद स नोऽयं दर्भो वरुणो दिवा कः
He who, being born, made firm the earth, who propped up the atmosphere and the sky—whom, when carried, evil did not touch—may this darbha, Varuna, and the shining one protect us.
सपत्नहा शतकाण्डः सहस्वान् ओषधीनां प्रथमः सं बभूव । स नोऽयं दर्भः परि पातु विश्वतस्तेन साक्षीय पृतनाः पृतन्यतः
The rival-slayer, hundred-jointed, powerful, first among herbs—may this darbha protect us on all sides; with it may we conquer battles and combat.
सहस्रार्घः शतकाण्डः पयस्वान् अपामग्निर्वीरुधां राजसूयम् । स नोऽयं दर्भः परि पातु विश्वतो देवो मणिरायुषा सं सृजाति नः
Thousand-valued, hundred-jointed, rich in milk, fire of the waters, king of plants—may this darbha protect us on all sides; the divine jewel joins us with long life.
घृतादुल्लुप्तो मधुमान् पयस्वान् भूमिदृंहोऽच्युतश्च्यावयिष्णुः । नुदन्त्सपत्नान् अधरांश्च कृण्वन् दर्भा रोह महतामिन्द्रियेण
Smeared with ghee, sweet, rich in milk, supporter of the earth, unfailing, not to be shaken—driving away rivals, casting down the lowly—rise up, darbha, with great power.
त्वं भूमिमत्येष्योजसा त्वं वेद्यां सीदसि चारुरध्वरे । त्वां पवित्रमृषयोऽभरन्त त्वं पुनीहि दुरितान्यस्मत्
You enter the earth with strength, you sit beautifully on the altar; the sages bore you as a purifier—purify us from evils.
तीक्ष्णो राजा विषासही रक्षोहा विश्वचर्षणिः । ओजो देवानां बलमुग्रमेतत्तं ते बध्नामि जरसे स्वस्तये
Sharp king, poison-conqueror, slayer of demons, beloved of all people—this fierce strength of the gods I bind for you for old age and well-being.
