ब्रह्मज्येष्ठा संभृता वीर्याणि ब्रह्माग्रे ज्येष्ठं दिवमा ततान । भूतानां ब्रह्मा प्रथमोत जज्ञे तेनार्हति ब्रह्मणा स्पर्धितुं कः
The powers gathered are eldest in Brahman; at first, Brahman stretched out the highest heaven. Among beings, Brahman was born first; who, then, is worthy to rival Brahman?
येन देवं सवितारं परि देवा अधारयन् । तेनेमं ब्रह्मणस्पते परि राष्ट्राय धत्तन
With that by which the gods upheld Savitar the god, with that, O Brahmaṇaspati, encompass this one for sovereignty.
परीममिन्द्रमायुषे महे क्षत्राय धत्तन । यथैनं जरसे नयाज्ज्योक्क्षत्रेऽधि जागरत्
Encompass this Indra for long life, for great dominion, so that old age may not bring him down, but that he may remain ever awake in his sovereignty.
परीममिन्द्रमायुषे महे श्रोत्राय धत्तन । यथैनं जरसे नयाज्ज्योक्श्रोत्रेऽधि जागरत्
Encompass this Indra for long life, for great hearing, so that old age may not bring him down, but that he may remain ever awake in his hearing.
परि धत्त धत्त नो वर्चसेमं जरामृत्युं कृणुत दीर्घमायुः । बृहस्पतिः प्रायच्छद्वास एतत्सोमाय राज्ञे परिधातवा उ
Encompass, encompass us with brilliance; drive away old age and death, grant long life. Bṛhaspati has bestowed this garment; Soma the king is to be encompassed with it.
जरां सु गच्छ परि धत्स्व वासो भवा गृष्टीनामभिशस्तिपा उ । शतं च जीव शरदः पुरूची रायश्च पोषमुपसंव्ययस्व
Go away, old age, put on this garment; be the protector of dwellings against curses. Live a hundred autumns, widely renowned, and wrap yourself in abundant wealth.
परीदं वासो अधिथाः स्वस्तयेऽभूर्वापीनामभिशस्तिपा उ । शतं च जीव शरदः पुरूचीर्वसूनि चारुर्वि भजासि जीवन्
You have put on this garment for well-being, you have become the protector of waters against curses. Live a hundred autumns, widely renowned, and, living, divide lovely riches.
योगेयोगे तवस्तरं वाजेवाजे हवामहे । सखाय इन्द्रमूतये
In every union, in every contest for strength, in every contest for prize, we call Indra as a friend for help.
हिरण्यवर्णो अजरः सुवीरो जरामृत्युः प्रजया सं विशस्व । तदग्निराह तदु सोम आह बृहस्पतिः सविता तदिन्द्रः
Golden-hued, undecaying, of good sons, conquer old age and death with progeny. Thus says Agni, thus says Soma, Bṛhaspati, Savitar, and Indra.
अश्रान्तस्य त्वा मनसा युनज्मि प्रथमस्य च । उत्कूलमुद्वहो भवोदुह्य प्रति धावतात्
With tireless mind I yoke you, the foremost; be the one who carries upward to the shore, let the milker run forth.
अग्नेः प्रजातं परि यद्धिरण्यममृतं दध्रे अधि मर्त्येषु । य एनद्वेद स इदेनमर्हति जरामृत्युर्भवति यो बिभर्ति
When the gold born from Agni is placed among mortals as immortal, whoever knows this is worthy of it; he who bears it becomes free from old age and death.
यद्धिरण्यं सूर्येण सुवर्णं प्रजावन्तो मनवः पूर्व ईषिरे । तत्त्वा चन्द्रं वर्चसा सं सृजत्यायुष्मान् भवति यो बिभर्ति
That gold, shining like the sun, which the ancient Manu with offspring sought— that, O you, the moon sends forth with brilliance; he who bears it becomes long-lived.
आयुषे त्वा वर्चसे त्वौजसे च बलाय च । यथा हिरण्यतेजसा विभासासि जनामनु
For long life, for brilliance, for vigor, and for strength— as you shine among people with golden splendor.
यद्वेद राजा वरुणो वेद देवो बृहस्पतिः । इन्द्रो यद्वृत्रहा वेद तत्त आयुष्यं भुवत्तत्ते वर्चस्यं भुवत्
That which King Varuṇa knows, that which the god Bṛhaspati knows, that which Indra, the slayer of Vṛtra, knows—may that become your long life, may that become your radiance.
गोभिष्ट्वा पात्वृषभो वृषा त्वा पातु वाजिभिः । वायुष्ट्वा ब्रह्मणा पात्विन्द्रस्त्वा पात्विन्द्रियैः
May the bull protect you with cows; may the mighty one guard you with steeds; may Vāyu shield you with the sacred utterance; may Indra protect you with his powers.
सोमस्त्वा पात्वोषधीभिर्नक्षत्रैः पातु सूर्यः । माद्भ्यस्त्वा चन्द्रो वृत्रहा वातः प्राणेन रक्षतु
May Soma protect you with herbs; may the Sun guard you with the stars; may the Moon, the slayer of Vṛtra, shield you from waters; may the Wind protect you with breath.
तिस्रो दिवस्तिस्रः पृथिवीस्त्रीण्यन्तरिक्षाणि चतुरः समुद्रान् । त्रिवृतं स्तोमं त्रिवृत आप आहुस्तास्त्वा रक्षन्तु त्रिवृता त्रिवृद्भिः
Three are the heavens, three the earths, three the atmospheres, four the oceans; the triple hymn, the triple waters they declare—may these protect you, triply, with triple forces.
त्रीन् नाकांस्त्रीन् समुद्रांस्त्रीन् ब्रध्नांस्त्रीन् वैष्टपान् । त्रीन् मातरिश्वनस्त्रीन्त्सूर्यान् गोप्तॄन् कल्पयामि ते
Three are the heavens, three the oceans, three the shining ones, three the realms of bliss; three of Mātariśvan, three of the Suns—I appoint these as your guardians.
घृतेन त्वा समुक्षाम्यग्ने आज्येन वर्धयन् । अग्नेश्चन्द्रस्य सूर्यस्य मा प्राणं मायिनो दभन्
With ghee I anoint you, Agni, increasing you with clarified butter; may neither Agni, nor the Moon, nor the Sun, nor the breath be harmed by the deceivers.
मा वः प्राणं मा वोऽपानं मा हरो मायिनो दभन् । भ्राजन्तो विश्ववेदसो देवा दैव्येन धावत
May your breath, your downward breath, your vital force not be harmed by the deceivers; shining, all-knowing gods, run with divine speed.
प्राणेनाग्निं सं सृजति वातः प्राणेन संहितः । प्राणेन विश्वतोमुखं सूर्यं देवा अजनयन्
With breath, Agni is joined; the Wind is united with breath; with breath, the gods created the Sun, who faces all directions.
