ये देवानामृत्विजो यज्ञियासो मनोर्यजत्रा अमृता ऋतज्ञाः । ते नो रासन्तामुरुगायमद्य यूयं पात स्वस्तिभिः सदा नः
May those who are priests of the gods, worthy of sacrifice, the immortal knowers of truth, the worshipful ones of Manu, grant us wide-ranging glory today. May you always protect us with blessings.
तदस्तु मित्रावरुणा तदग्ने शं योरस्मभ्यमिदमस्तु शस्तम् । अशीमहि गाधमुत प्रतिष्ठां नमो दिवे बृहते सादनाय
Let it be so, O Mitra and Varuna, let it be so, O Agni; may this blessing be ours. May we attain depth and firm foundation; homage to the great heaven, the seat of dwelling.
उषा अप स्वसुस्तमः सं वर्तयति वर्तनिं सुजातता । अया वाजं देवहितं सनेम मदेम शतहिमाः सुवीराः
Dawn, the best of sisters, turns the path toward brightness, well-born. By her may we obtain wealth bestowed by the gods, may we rejoice, strong with a hundred powers and good sons.
इन्द्रस्य बाहू स्थविरौ वृषाणौ चित्रा इमा वृषभौ पारयिष्णू । तौ योक्षे प्रथमो योग आगते याभ्यां जितमसुराणां स्वर्यत्
Indra’s arms, strong and mighty, these splendid, powerful bulls, are able to carry us across. Harness them at the first call to action, by which the enemies were conquered and the heavenly world attained.
आशुः शिशानो वृषभो न भीमो घनाघनः क्षोभणश्चर्षणीनाम् । संक्रन्दनोऽनिमिष एकवीरः शतं सेना अजयत्साकमिन्द्रः
Swift, fierce as a bull, terrifying, thundering, shaking the peoples, tumultuous, unblinking, a solitary hero—Indra, together with a hundred armies, conquered.
संक्रन्दनेनानिमिषेण जिष्णुनायोध्येन दुश्च्यवनेन धृष्णुना । तदिन्द्रेण जयत तत्सहध्वं युधो नर इषुहस्तेन वृष्णा
With tumult, with unblinking might, with victorious, unyielding, and bold force—by that Indra, conquer, stand together in battle, O men, with the mighty one who holds the arrow in his hand.
स इषुहस्तैः स निषङ्गिभिर्वशी संस्रष्टा स युध इन्द्रो गणेन । संसृष्टजित्सोमपा बाहुशर्ध्युग्रधन्वा प्रतिहिताभिरस्ता
With those who hold arrows, with those who bear quivers, with the obedient, Indra leads the host in battle. The winner of assembled contests, drinker of Soma, strong-armed, with fierce bow, he stands with those who resist.
बलविज्ञायः स्थविरः प्रवीरः सहस्वान् वाजी सहमान उग्रः । अभिवीरो अभिषत्वा सहोजिज्जैत्रमिन्द्र रथमा तिष्ठ गोविदम्
Wise in strength, steadfast, supremely heroic, powerful, victorious, enduring, fierce—O Indra, stand on our chariot, rich in cattle, as the victorious one, the subduer of enemies.
इमं वीरमनु हर्षध्वमुग्रमिन्द्रं सखायो अनु सं रभध्वम् । ग्रामजितं गोजितं वज्रबाहुं जयन्तमज्म प्रमृणन्तमोजसा
Rejoice together in this hero, this fierce Indra, O friends; join together with him. Victor in the village, victor in cattle, with arms like thunderbolts, triumphant in the race, crushing with his might.
अभि गोत्राणि सहसा गाहमानोऽदाय उग्रः शतमन्युरिन्द्रः । दुश्च्यवनः पृतनाषाडयोध्योऽस्माकं सेना अवतु प्र युत्सु
Assaulting the enclosures with force, taking them, fierce Indra, the hundred-wrathful, advances. The unyielding, destroyer of hosts, unconquered in battle—may our army be protected by him in the fight.
बृहस्पते परि दीया रथेन रक्षोहामित्रामपबाधमानः । प्रभञ्जंछत्रून् प्रमृणन्न् अमित्रान् अस्माकमेध्यविता तनूनाम्
O Brihaspati, circle around with your chariot, slaying demons and driving away foes. Breaking enemies, crushing adversaries, may you be the purifier of our people.
इन्द्र एषां नेता बृहस्पतिर्दक्षिणा यज्ञः पुर एतु सोमः । देवसेनानामभिभञ्जतीनां जयन्तीनां मरुतो यन्तु मध्ये
Let Indra be their leader, Brihaspati the right hand, sacrifice the front, Soma the advance. Among the divine hosts that break through and conquer, let the Maruts go in the midst.
इन्द्रस्य वृष्णो वरुणस्य राज्ञ आदित्यानां मरुतां शर्ध उग्रम् । महामनसां भुवनच्यवानां घोषो देवानां जयतामुदस्थात्
Let the cry of the gods arise in victory—the mighty Indra, king Varuna, the Adityas, the fierce host of the Maruts, the great-minded, the movers of the worlds.
अस्माकमिन्द्रः समृतेषु ध्वजेष्वस्माकं या इषवस्ता जयन्तु । अस्माकं वीरा उत्तरे भवन्त्वस्मान् देवासोऽवता हवेषु
May Indra be on our banners in battles; may our arrows be victorious. May our heroes be the best; may the gods protect us in our offerings.
इदमुच्छ्रेयोऽवसानमागां शिवे मे द्यावापृथिवी अभूताम् । असपत्नाः प्रदिशो मे भवन्तु न वै त्वा द्विष्मो अभयं नो अस्तु
May this conclusion be auspicious; may Heaven and Earth be gracious to me. May all directions be free from enmity toward me; truly, we do not hate you—may there be safety for us.
यत इन्द्र भयामहे ततो नो अभयं कृधि । मघवंछग्धि तव त्वं न ऊतिभिर्वि द्विषो वि मृधो जहि
O Indra, from whatever we fear, from that make us fearless. O Maghavan, drive away our foes with your aid; scatter the haters, destroy the assailants.
इन्द्रं वयमनूराधं हवामहेऽनु राध्यास्म द्विपदा चतुष्पदा । मा नः सेना अररुषीरुप गुर्विषूचिरिन्द्र द्रुहो वि नाशय
We call upon Indra, the generous, for favor; may we obtain prosperity among bipeds and quadrupeds. May no hostile army overpower us; O Indra, destroy the plots of the malicious, both near and far.
इन्द्रस्त्रातोत वृत्रहा परस्फानो वरेण्यः । स रक्षिता चरमतः स मध्यतः स पश्चात्स पुरस्तान् नो अस्तु
Indra is our protector, the slayer of Vṛtra, mighty and excellent. May he guard us as we move, in our midst, behind us, and before us.
उरुं नो लोकमनु नेषि विद्वान्त्स्वर्यज्ज्योतिरभयं स्वस्ति । उग्रा त इन्द्र स्थविरस्य बाहू उप क्षयेम शरणा बृहन्ता
Lead us, O wise one, to a broad space; grant us the radiant, fearless, and auspicious world. O powerful Indra, may we dwell under the shelter of your mighty, enduring arms.
अभयं नः करत्यन्तरिक्षमभयं द्यावापृथिवी उभे इमे । अभयं पश्चादभयं पुरस्तादुत्तरादधरादभयं नो अस्तु
May the midspace make us fearless, may both Heaven and Earth make us fearless. May there be safety behind, before, above, and below for us.
अभयं मित्रादभयममित्रादभयं ज्ञातादभयं पुरो यः । अभयं नक्तमभयं दिवा नः सर्वा आशा मम मित्रं भवन्तु
May there be safety for us from friend and from foe, from kin and from those ahead. May there be safety for us by night and by day; may all regions become our friends.
असपत्नं पुरस्तात्पश्चान् नो अभयं कृतम् । सविता मा दक्षिणत उत्तरान् मा शचीपतिः
Make us without rivals in front and grant us safety behind. May Savitar protect us on the right, and the Lord of Power on the left.
दिवो मादित्या रक्षतु भूम्या रक्षन्त्वग्नयः । इन्द्राग्नी रक्षतां मा पुरस्तादश्विनावभितः शर्म यच्छताम् । तिरश्चीन् अघ्न्या रक्षतु जातवेदा भूतकृतो मे सर्वतः सन्तु वर्म
May the Ādityas guard us from the sky, and Agnis protect us from the earth. May Indra and Agni guard us in front, may the Aśvins grant us shelter all around. May Jātavedas, the all-knowing, protect us from across, and may beings form armor for me on every side.
अग्निर्मा पातु वसुभिः पुरस्तात्तस्मिन् क्रमे तस्मिं छ्रये तां पुरं प्रैमि । स मा रक्षतु स मा गोपायतु तस्मा आत्मानं परि ददे स्वाहा
May Agni guard me with the Vasus in front; in him I step, in him I take refuge, into that fortress I enter. May he protect me, may he watch over me; to him I entrust myself—svāhā.
वायुर्मान्तरिक्षेणैतस्या दिशः पातु तस्मिन् क्रमे तस्मिं छ्रये तां पुरं प्रैमि । स मा रक्षतु स मा गोपायतु तस्मा आत्मानं परि ददे स्वाहा
May Vāyu guard me with the midspace in this direction; in him I step, in him I take refuge, into that fortress I enter. May he protect me, may he watch over me; to him I entrust myself—svāhā.
सोमो मा रुद्रैर्दक्षिणाया दिशः पातु तस्मिन् क्रमे तस्मिं छ्रये तां पुरं प्रैमि । स मा रक्षतु स मा गोपायतु तस्मा आत्मानं परि ददे स्वाहा
May Soma guard me with the Rudras on the right; in him I step, in him I take refuge, into that fortress I enter. May he protect me, may he watch over me; to him I entrust myself—svāhā.
वरुणो मादित्यैरेतस्या दिशः पातु तस्मिन् क्रमे तस्मिं छ्रये तां पुरं प्रैमि । स मा रक्षतु स मा गोपायतु तस्मा आत्मानं परि ददे स्वाहा
May Varuṇa guard me with the Ādityas in this direction; in him I step, in him I take refuge, into that fortress I enter. May he protect me, may he watch over me; to him I entrust myself—svāhā.
सूर्यो मा द्यावापृथिवीभ्यां प्रतीच्या दिशः पातु तस्मिन् क्रमे तस्मिं छ्रये तां पुरं प्रैमि । स मा रक्षतु स मा गोपायतु तस्मा आत्मानं परि ददे स्वाहा
May Sūrya guard me with Heaven and Earth from the western direction; in him I step, in him I take refuge, into that fortress I enter. May he protect me, may he watch over me; to him I entrust myself—svāhā.
आपो मौषधीमतीरेतस्या दिशः पान्तु तासु क्रमे तासु श्रये तां पुरं प्रैमि । ता मा रक्षन्तु ता मा गोपायन्तु ताभ्य आत्मानं परि ददे स्वाहा
May the Waters, rich in herbs, guard me in this direction; in them I step, in them I take refuge, into that fortress I enter. May they protect me, may they watch over me; to them I entrust myself—svāhā.
विश्वकर्मा मा सप्तऋषिभिरुदीच्या दिशः पातु तस्मिन् क्रमे तस्मिं छ्रये तां पुरं प्रैमि । स मा रक्षतु स मा गोपायतु तस्मा आत्मानं परि ददे स्वाहा
May Viśvakarman guard me with the Seven Sages from the northern direction; in him I step, in him I take refuge, into that fortress I enter. May he protect me, may he watch over me; to him I entrust myself—svāhā.
