चन्द्रमा मनसो जातश्चक्षोः सूर्यो अजायत । मुखादिन्द्रश्चाग्निश्च प्राणाद्वायुरजायत
The moon was born from his mind, from his eye the sun was born; from his mouth Indra and Agni, from his breath Vāyu was born.
नाभ्या आसीदन्तरिक्षं शीर्ष्णो द्यौः समवर्तत । पद्भ्यां भूमिर्दिशः श्रोत्रात्तथा लोकामकल्पयन्
From his navel arose the midspace, from his head the sky was fashioned; from his feet the earth, from his ears the directions—they arranged the worlds thus.
विराडग्रे समभवद्विराजो अधि पूरुषः । स जातो अत्यरिच्यत पश्चाद्भूमिमथो पुरः
In the beginning Virāj was born, from Virāj the Person; once born, he spread out beyond the earth, both behind and before.
यत्पुरुषेण हविषा देवा यज्ञमतन्वत । वसन्तो अस्यासीदाज्यं ग्रीष्म इध्मः शरद्धविः
When the gods performed sacrifice with the Person as the offering, spring was its clarified butter, summer the fuel, autumn the oblation.
तं यज्ञं प्रावृषा प्रौक्षन् पुरुषं जातमग्रशः । तेन देवा अयजन्त साध्या वसवश्च ये
They anointed that sacrifice, the first-born Person, with the rains; with it the gods, the Sādhyas, and the Vasus sacrificed.
तस्मादश्वा अजायन्त ये च के चोभयादतः । गावो ह जज्ञिरे तस्मात्तस्माज्जाता अजावयः
From that sacrifice, fully offered, horses were born, and all creatures with two rows of teeth; cows were born from it, and from it goats and sheep were born.
तस्माद्यज्ञात्सर्वहुत ऋचः सामानि जज्ञिरे । छन्दो ह जज्ञिरे तस्माद्यजुस्तस्मादजायत
From that sacrifice, fully offered, the Ṛc and Sāman hymns were born; the meters were born from it, and from it the Yajus was born.
तस्माद्यज्ञात्सर्वहुतः संभृतं पृषदाज्यम् । पशूंस्तांश्चक्रे वायव्यान् आरण्या ग्राम्याश्च ये
From that sacrifice, fully offered, was gathered the mixed butter; he created those animals, those of the air, of the forest, and of the village.
सप्तास्यासन् परिधयस्त्रिः सप्त समिधः कृताः । देवा यद्यज्ञं तन्वाना अबध्नन् पुरुषं पशुम्
Seven were its enclosing logs, three times seven the kindling sticks arranged; when the gods, performing the sacrifice, bound the Person as the sacrificial animal.
मूर्ध्नो देवस्य बृहतो अंशवः सप्त सप्ततीः । राज्ञः सोमस्याजायन्त जातस्य पुरुषादधि
From the head of the great god, the king Soma, seventy-seven portions were born, after the Person was created.
चित्राणि साकं दिवि रोचनानि सरीसृपाणि भुवने जवानि । तुर्मिशं सुमतिमिच्छमानो अहानि गीर्भिः सपर्यामि नाकम्
Together with the shining lights in the sky, with the swift creatures moving upon the earth, desiring excellent understanding, I honor with words the heavenly realm, O Turmisha.
सुहवमग्ने कृत्तिका रोहिणी चास्तु भद्रं मृगशिरः शमार्द्रा । पुनर्वसू सूनृता चारु पुष्यो भानुराश्लेषा अयनं मघा मे
May Agni, easy to invoke, and the Krittikas, Rohini, auspicious Mrigashirsha, and Ardra bring me well-being; may Punarvasu, sweet-spoken, lovely Pushya, radiant Ashlesha, the solstice, and Magha be favorable to me.
पुण्यं पूर्वा फल्गुन्यौ चात्र हस्तश्चित्रा शिवा स्वाति सुखो मे अस्तु । राधे विशाखे सुहवानुराधा ज्येष्ठा सुनक्षत्रमरिष्ट मूलम्
May the auspicious Purva and Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Chitra, auspicious Swati, and comfort be mine; may Radha, Vishakha, the easily-invoked Anuradha, Jyeshtha, the fortunate star, and unfailing Mula be favorable.
अन्नं पूर्वा रासतां मे अषाढा ऊर्जं देव्युत्तरा आ वहन्तु । अभिजिन् मे रासतां पुण्यमेव श्रवणः श्रविष्ठाः कुर्वतां सुपुष्टिम्
May Purva Ashadha grant me food, may the divine Uttara Ashadha bring me strength; may Abhijit grant me merit, and may Shravana and Shravishtha bestow abundant nourishment.
आ मे महच्छतभिषग्वरीय आ मे द्वया प्रोष्ठपदा सुशर्म । आ रेवती चाश्वयुजौ भगं म आ मे रयिं भरण्य आ वहन्तु
May the great and most excellent Shatabhishak come to me, may both Proshthapadas bring me good fortune; may Revati and Ashvayuja bring me prosperity, may Bharani bring me wealth.
यानि नक्षत्राणि दिव्यन्तरिक्षे अप्सु भूमौ यानि नगेषु दिक्षु । प्रकल्पयंश्चन्द्रमा यान्येति सर्वाणि ममैतानि शिवानि सन्तु
Whatever constellations are in the sky, in the midspace, in the waters, on earth, on the mountains, and in the directions—those which the Moon arranges and moves among—may all these be auspicious for me.
अष्टाविंशानि शिवानि शग्मानि सह योगं भजन्तु मे । योगं प्र पद्ये क्षेमं च क्षेमं प्र पद्ये योगं च नमोऽहोरात्राभ्यामस्तु
May the twenty-eight auspicious and beneficent stars unite with me in harmony; I seek union and well-being, I seek well-being and union; homage to day and night.
स्वस्तितं मे सुप्रातः सुसायं सुदिवं सुमृगं सुशकुनं मे अस्तु । सुहवमग्ने स्वस्त्यमर्त्यं गत्वा पुनरायाभिनन्दन्
May I have well-being in the morning, in the evening, throughout the day, with good fortune, with favorable signs and omens; O Agni, easy to invoke, may you bring us well-being, and after going forth, return to us with joy.
अनुहवं परिहवं परिवादं परिक्षवम् । सर्वैर्मे रिक्तकुम्भान् परा तान्त्सवितः सुव
May all ill-will, slander, blame, and censure be driven away; O Savitar, remove from me all empty vessels.
अपपापं परिक्षवं पुण्यं भक्षीमहि क्षवम् । शिवा ते पाप नासिकां पुण्यगश्चाभि मेहताम्
May we consume what is pure and auspicious, free from evil and blame; may your nose, O auspicious one, be free from evil, and may what is virtuous flow toward me.
इमा या ब्रह्मणस्पते विषुचीर्वात ईरते । सध्रीचीरिन्द्र ताः कृत्वा मह्यं शिवतमास्कृधि
O Brahmanaspati, these winds that blow in various directions—O Indra, make them all favorable for me, and grant me the utmost auspiciousness.
स्वस्ति नो अस्त्वभयं नो अस्तु नमोऽहोरत्राभ्यामस्तु
May well-being be ours, may we be free from fear; homage to day and night.
शान्ता द्यौः शान्ता पृथिवी शान्तमिदमुर्वन्तरिक्षम् । शान्ता उदन्वतीरापः शान्ता नः सन्त्वोषधीः
May the sky be peaceful, may the earth be peaceful, may this wide midspace be peaceful; may the flowing waters be peaceful, may the plants be peaceful for us.
शान्तानि पूर्वरूपाणि शान्तं नो अस्तु कृताकृतम् । शान्तं भूतं च भव्यं च सर्वमेव शमस्तु नः
May the forms of the past be peaceful, may our deeds—done and undone—be peaceful; may the past and the future, all things, be peace for us.
इयं या परमेष्ठिनी वाग्देवी ब्रह्मसंशिता । ययैव ससृजे घोरं तयैव शान्तिरस्तु नः
This speech, the goddess of speech, established in Brahman, by which the terrible was created—may that same bring us peace.
इदं यत्परमेष्ठिनं मनो वां ब्रह्मसंशितम् । येनैव ससृजे घोरं तेनैव शान्तिरस्तु नः
This mind of yours, O supreme one, established in Brahman, by which the terrible was created—may that same bring us peace.
इमानि यानि पञ्चेन्द्रियाणि मनःषष्ठानि मे हृदि ब्रह्मणा संशितानि । यैरेव ससृजे घोरं तैरेव शान्तिरस्तु नः
These five senses, with the mind as the sixth, established in my heart by Brahman—by which the terrible was created—may those very ones bring us peace.
शं नो मित्रः शं वरुणः शं विष्णुः शं प्रजापतिः । शं न इन्द्रो बृहस्पतिः शं नो भवत्वर्यमा
May Mitra bring us peace, may Varuna bring us peace, may Vishnu bring us peace, may Prajapati bring us peace; may Indra and Brihaspati bring us peace, may Aryaman bring us peace.
शं नो मित्रः शं वरुणः शं विवस्वां छमन्तकः । उत्पाताः पार्थिवान्तरिक्षाः शं नो दिविचरा ग्रहाः
May Mitra, Varuṇa, Vivasvat, and Amantaka bring us peace; may the portents of earth and sky, and the planets that move in the heavens, bring us peace.
शं नो भूमिर्वेप्यमाना शमुल्का निर्हतं च यत्। शं गावो लोहितक्षीराः शं भूमिरव तीर्यतीः
May the earth, though trembling, bring us peace; may meteors and all that is struck down bring us peace; may the cows with red milk bring us peace; may the earth and all her crossings bring us peace.
