19.2 शं त आपो हैमवतीः शमु ते सन्तूत्स्याः । शं ते सनिष्यदा आपः शमु ते सन्तु वर्ष्याः
May the waters from the Himalayas bring you well-being, may those from the lakes bring you well-being. May the settling waters bring you well-being, may the rainy waters bring you well-being.
शं त आपो धन्वन्याः शं ते सन्त्वनूप्याः । शं ते खनित्रिमा आपः शं याः कुम्भेभिराभृताः
May the waters from the deserts bring you well-being, may those from the marshes bring you well-being. May the waters drawn by digging bring you well-being, and those carried in jars.
अनभ्रयः खनमाना विप्रा गम्भीरे अपसः । भिषग्भ्यो भिषक्तरा आपो अछा वदामसि
The cloudless, deep waters, being drawn, are profound. Among healers, these waters are the most healing; let us invoke them.
अपामह दिव्यानामपां स्रोतस्यानाम् । अपामह प्रणेजनेऽश्वा भवथ वाजिनः
We have drunk of the celestial waters, of the streams of waters. We have drunk at the gathering; may you become swift horses.
ता अपः शिवा अपोऽयक्ष्मंकरणीरपः । यथैव तृप्यते मयस्तास्त आ दत्त भेषजीः
These waters are auspicious, they are disease-removing waters. As satisfaction comes, so may you grant us healing remedies.
दिवस्पृथिव्याः पर्यन्तरिक्षाद्वनस्पतिभ्यो अध्योषधीभ्यः । यत्रयत्र विभृतो जातवेदास्तत स्तुतो जुषमाणो न एहि
From heaven and earth, from the intermediate space, from the trees and the herbs, wherever the bearer of the sacred fire is distributed, praised, and welcomed, come to us.
यस्ते अप्सु महिमा यो वनेषु य ओषधीषु पशुष्वप्स्वन्तः । अग्ने सर्वास्तन्वः सं रभस्व ताभिर्न एहि द्रविणोदा अजस्रः
Your greatness in the waters, in the forests, in the herbs, in the animals, in the waters within—Agni, gather all those forms together; with them, come to us, O giver of wealth, ever generous.
यस्ते देवेषु महिमा स्वर्गो या ते तनुः पितृष्वाविवेश । पुष्टिर्या ते मनुष्येषु पप्रथेऽग्ने तया रयिमस्मासु धेहि
Your greatness among the gods is heavenly, your form entered among the ancestors. The prosperity you spread among humans, Agni, with that grant us wealth.
श्रुत्कर्णाय कवये वेद्याय वचोभिर्वाकैरुप यामि रातिम् । यतो भयमभयं तन् नो अस्त्वव देवानां यज हेडो अग्ने
To the wise, to the learned, to the one with attentive ears, I approach with words and speech for favor. Where there is fear, let there be safety for us; worship the gods, O Agni, and avert harm.
यामाहुतिं प्रथमामथर्वा या जाता या हव्यमकृणोज्जातवेदाः । तां त एतां प्रथमो जोहवीमि ताभिष्टुप्तो वहतु हव्यमग्निरग्नये स्वाहा
The first offering that Atharvan made, that which was born, that which the bearer of the sacred fire prepared as an offering—this, the first, I invoke; may Agni, urged by these, carry the offering to Agni. Svaha.
आकूतिं देवीं सुभगां पुरो दधे चित्तस्य माता सुहवा नो अस्तु । यामाशामेमि केवली सा मे अस्तु विदेयमेनां मनसि प्रविष्टाम्
I place before me the divine impulse, auspicious and gracious, mother of thought; may she be favorable to us. The impulse I desire, let it be mine; let it enter my mind as I wish.
आकूत्या नो बृहस्पत आकूत्या न उपा गहि । अथो भगस्य नो धेह्यथो नः सुहवो भव
By impulse, O Brihaspati, by impulse, come near to us. And grant us the share of fortune; and be gracious to us.
बृहस्पतिर्म आकूतिमाङ्गिरसः प्रति जानातु वाचमेताम् । यस्य देवा देवताः संबभूवुः स सुप्रणीताः कामो अन्वेत्वस्मान्
May Bṛhaspati, the descendant of Angiras, acknowledge this speech of mine; he whose divinities became the gods—may well-guided desires follow us.
इन्द्रो राजा जगतश्चर्षणीनामधि क्षमि विषुरूपं यदस्ति । ततो ददाति दाशुषे वसूनि चोदद्राध उपस्तुतश्चिदर्वाक्
Indra is king over the moving peoples, over the earth, whatever has manifold forms; from that he gives wealth to the worshipper, and, being praised, he brings it near even from afar.
सहस्रबाहुः पुरुषः सहस्राक्षः सहस्रपात्। स भूमिं विश्वतो वृत्वात्यतिष्ठद्दशाङ्गुलम्
The Person has a thousand arms, a thousand eyes, a thousand feet; having encompassed the earth on every side, he extended beyond it by ten fingers' breadth.
त्रिभिः पद्भिर्द्यामरोहत्पादस्येहाभवत्पुनः । तथा व्यक्रामद्विष्वङशनानशने अनु
With three steps he ascended to the sky, and with the fourth he remained here again; thus he spread out everywhere, both in what eats and what does not eat.
तावन्तो अस्य महिमानस्ततो ज्यायांश्च पूरुषः । पादोऽस्य विश्वा भूतानि त्रिपादस्यामृतं दिवि
Such are his greatnesses, yet the Person is greater than these; one fourth of him is all beings, three fourths of him are immortal in heaven.
पुरुष एवेदं सर्वं यद्भूतं यच्च भाव्यम् । उतामृतत्वस्येश्वरो यदन्येनाभवत्सह
The Person alone is all this—what has been and what will be; and he is also the lord of immortality, whatever grows together with him.
यत्पुरुषं व्यदधुः कतिधा व्यकल्पयन् । मुखं किमस्य किं बाहू किमूरू पादा उच्यते
When they divided the Person, into how many did they apportion him? What was his mouth, what his arms, what are called his thighs and feet?
ब्राह्मणोऽस्य मुखमासीद्बाहू राजन्योऽभवत्। मध्यं तदस्य यद्वैश्यः पद्भ्यां शूद्रो अजायत
His mouth became the Brāhmaṇa, his arms became the Rājanya; his middle was the Vaiśya, from his feet the Śūdra was born.
चन्द्रमा मनसो जातश्चक्षोः सूर्यो अजायत । मुखादिन्द्रश्चाग्निश्च प्राणाद्वायुरजायत
The moon was born from his mind, from his eye the sun was born; from his mouth Indra and Agni, from his breath Vāyu was born.
नाभ्या आसीदन्तरिक्षं शीर्ष्णो द्यौः समवर्तत । पद्भ्यां भूमिर्दिशः श्रोत्रात्तथा लोकामकल्पयन्
From his navel arose the midspace, from his head the sky was fashioned; from his feet the earth, from his ears the directions—they arranged the worlds thus.
विराडग्रे समभवद्विराजो अधि पूरुषः । स जातो अत्यरिच्यत पश्चाद्भूमिमथो पुरः
In the beginning Virāj was born, from Virāj the Person; once born, he spread out beyond the earth, both behind and before.
यत्पुरुषेण हविषा देवा यज्ञमतन्वत । वसन्तो अस्यासीदाज्यं ग्रीष्म इध्मः शरद्धविः
When the gods performed sacrifice with the Person as the offering, spring was its clarified butter, summer the fuel, autumn the oblation.
तं यज्ञं प्रावृषा प्रौक्षन् पुरुषं जातमग्रशः । तेन देवा अयजन्त साध्या वसवश्च ये
They anointed that sacrifice, the first-born Person, with the rains; with it the gods, the Sādhyas, and the Vasus sacrificed.
तस्मादश्वा अजायन्त ये च के चोभयादतः । गावो ह जज्ञिरे तस्मात्तस्माज्जाता अजावयः
From that sacrifice, fully offered, horses were born, and all creatures with two rows of teeth; cows were born from it, and from it goats and sheep were born.
तस्माद्यज्ञात्सर्वहुत ऋचः सामानि जज्ञिरे । छन्दो ह जज्ञिरे तस्माद्यजुस्तस्मादजायत
From that sacrifice, fully offered, the Ṛc and Sāman hymns were born; the meters were born from it, and from it the Yajus was born.
तस्माद्यज्ञात्सर्वहुतः संभृतं पृषदाज्यम् । पशूंस्तांश्चक्रे वायव्यान् आरण्या ग्राम्याश्च ये
From that sacrifice, fully offered, was gathered the mixed butter; he created those animals, those of the air, of the forest, and of the village.
सप्तास्यासन् परिधयस्त्रिः सप्त समिधः कृताः । देवा यद्यज्ञं तन्वाना अबध्नन् पुरुषं पशुम्
Seven were its enclosing logs, three times seven the kindling sticks arranged; when the gods, performing the sacrifice, bound the Person as the sacrificial animal.
मूर्ध्नो देवस्य बृहतो अंशवः सप्त सप्ततीः । राज्ञः सोमस्याजायन्त जातस्य पुरुषादधि
From the head of the great god, the king Soma, seventy-seven portions were born, after the Person was created.
