{१६} देवेभ्यः कमवृणीत मृत्युं प्रजायै किममृतं नावृणीत । बृहस्पतिर्यज्ञमतनुत ऋषिः प्रियां यमस्तन्वमा रिरेच
For the gods he chose death, for offspring why did he not choose immortality? Brihaspati extended the sacrifice, the seer, and Yama released his beloved form.
त्वमग्न ईडितो जातवेदोऽवाड्ढव्यानि सुरभीणि कृत्वा । प्रादाः पितृभ्यः स्वधया ते अक्षन्न् अद्धि त्वं देव प्रयता हवींषि
You, Agni, invoked, knower of all births, have carried the fragrant offerings, giving them to the Fathers with your own power; they have eaten. Do you, O god, consume the prepared oblations.
आसीनासो अरुणीनामुपस्थे रयिं धत्त दाशुषे मर्त्याय । पुत्रेभ्यः पितरस्तस्य वस्वः प्र यच्छत त इहोर्जं दधात
Seated in the lap of the dawns, the mortals have obtained wealth for the worshipper; fathers, give that wealth to his sons, and here bestow strength.
अग्निष्वात्ताः पितर एह गच्छत सदःसदः सदत सुप्रणीतयः । अत्तो हवींषि प्रयतानि बर्हिषि रयिं च नः सर्ववीरं दधात
Fathers who have enjoyed the sacrificial fire, come here, sit in your proper seats, well-guided; eat the prepared oblations on the sacred grass, and grant us wealth with all heroes.
उपहूता नः पितरः सोम्यासो बर्हिष्येषु निधिषु प्रियेषु । त आ गमन्तु त इह श्रुवन्त्वधि ब्रुवन्तु तेऽवन्त्वस्मान्
Our fathers, delightful with Soma, called upon, on the sacred grass, in dear resting places—may they come, may they hear here, may they speak over us, may they protect us.
ये नः पितुः पितरो ये पितामहा अनूजहिरे सोमपीथं वसिष्ठाः । तेभिर्यमः सम्रराणो हवींष्युशन्न् उशद्भिः प्रतिकाममत्तु
Those who are our fathers' fathers, and grandfathers, who have followed, the Soma-drinkers, the most excellent—may Yama, rejoicing with them, eat the oblations, each according to his wish.
ये तातृषुर्देवत्रा जेहमाना होत्राविदः स्तोमतष्टासो अर्कैः । आग्ने याहि सहस्रं देववन्दैः सत्यैः कविभिर्ऋषिभिर्घर्मसद्भिः
Those who were eager among the gods, striving, skilled in the rites, composers of hymns with praises—O Agni, come with a thousand god-honored, true, wise seers, sitting at the hot libation.
ये सत्यासो हविरदो हविष्पा इन्द्रेण देवैः सरथं तुरेण । आग्ने याहि सुविदत्रेभिरर्वाङ्परैः पूर्वैर्ऋषिभिर्घर्मसद्भिः
Those true ones, eaters of the offering, drinkers of the oblation, who with Indra and the gods ride together, O Agni, come with the well-giving, with the later and earlier seers, sitting at the hot libation.
उप सर्प मातरं भूमिमेतामुरुव्यचसं पृथिवीं सुशेवाम् । ऊर्णम्रदाः पृथिवी दक्षिणावत एषा त्वा पातु प्रपथे पुरस्तात्
Draw near to this mother earth, broad, far-stretching, kindly; earth, rich in wool, may the southern part favor you; may she guard you on the path ahead.
उच्छ्वञ्चस्व पृथिवि मा नि बाधथाः सूपायनास्मै भव सूपसर्पणा । माता पुत्रं यथा सिचाभ्येनं भूम ऊर्णुहि
Rise up, O earth, do not press down; be easy to approach, easy to pass over for him; as a mother wraps her child, so cover him, O earth.
{१७} उच्छ्वञ्चमाना पृथिवी सु तिष्ठतु सहस्रं मित उप हि श्रयन्ताम् । ते गृहासो घृतश्चुतः स्योना विश्वाहास्मै शरणाः सन्त्वत्र
Rising, may the earth stand firm, let a thousand measures rest upon her; may your homes, flowing with ghee, be pleasant, may all shelters here be for him.
उत्ते स्तभ्नामि पृथिवीं त्वत्परीमं लोगं निदधन् मो अहं रिषम् । एतां स्थूणां पितरो धारयन्ति ते तत्र यमः सादना ते कृणोतु
I set up this earth for you, I lay down this boundary; let me not harm you. The fathers support this pillar; may Yama make your resting place there.
इममग्ने चमसं मा वि जिह्वरः प्रियो देवानामुत सोम्यानाम् । अयं यश्चमसो देवपानस्तस्मिन् देवा अमृता मादयन्ताम्
O Agni, do not lick up this bowl; it is dear to the gods and to those with Soma. This bowl is for the gods to drink; in it may the immortal gods rejoice.
अथर्वा पूर्णं चमसं यमिन्द्रायाबिभर्वाजिनीवते । तस्मिन् कृणोति सुकृतस्य भक्षं तस्मिन् इन्दुः पवते विश्वदानीम्
Atharvan carried the full bowl for Indra, the victorious; in it he makes the portion for the doer of good, in it the Soma flows, all-giving.
यत्ते कृष्णः शकुन आतुतोद पिपीलः सर्प उत वा श्वापदः । अग्निष्टद्विश्वादगदं कृणोतु सोमश्च यो ब्राह्मणामाविवेश
Whatever black bird, ant, serpent, or beast has touched you, may Agni make all that harmless, and Soma too, which has entered the Brahman's food.
पयस्वतीरोषधयः पयस्वन् मामकं पयः । अपां पयसो यत्पयस्तेन मा सह शुम्भतु
Let the plants rich in milk, the milk-rich, my milk, and the milk of the waters—may that milk cleanse me together.
इमा नारीरविधवाः सुपत्नीराञ्जनेन सर्पिषा सं स्पृशन्ताम् । अनश्रवो अनमीवाः सुरत्ना आ रोहन्तु जनयो योनिमग्रे
Let these women, not widowed, good wives, touch with ointment and clarified butter; free from tears, free from sickness, rich in treasures, let them ascend to the gathering at the forefront of birth.
सं गच्छस्व पितृभिः सं यमेनेष्टापूर्तेन परमे व्योमन् । हित्वावद्यं पुनरस्तमेहि सं गच्छतां तन्वा सुवर्चाः
Go forth together with the Fathers, together with Yama, with your offerings and good deeds, to the highest heaven; leaving behind all blame, return again to the setting, let those of bright form go together with your body.
ये नः पितुः पितरो ये पितामहा य आविविशुरुर्वन्तरिक्षम् । तेभ्यः स्वरादसुनीतिर्नो अद्य वथावशं तन्वः कल्पयाति
Those who are the Fathers of our father, those grandfathers who have entered the wide midspace—may their righteous guidance today shape our bodies according to their will.
शं ते नीहारो भवतु शं ते प्रुष्वाव शीयताम् । शीतिके शीतिकावति ह्लादिके ह्लादिकावति । मण्डूक्यप्सु शं भुव इमं स्वग्निं शमय
May the mist be auspicious for you, may the dew fall gently upon you; in the cold, in the coolness, in the refreshing, in the delight; in the water of the frog, may there be well-being for you—appease this fire for him.
{१८} विवस्वान् नो अभयं कृणोतु यः सुत्रामा जीरदानुः सुदानुः । इहेमे वीरा बहवो भवन्तु गोमदश्ववन् मय्यस्तु पुष्टम्
May Vivasvat, the well-knowing, the generous, the long-lived, the bountiful, grant us safety; here may many heroes be present, rich in cattle and horses, may prosperity be with me.
विवस्वान् नो अमृतत्वे दधातु परैतु मृत्युरमृतं न ऐतु । इमान् रक्षतु पुरुषान् आ जरिम्णो मो स्वेषामसवो यमं गुः
May Vivasvat establish us in immortality; let death depart, let the immortal not depart; may he protect these men from old age—let not their vital breaths go to Yama.
यो दध्रे अन्तरिक्षे न मह्ना पितॄणां कविः प्रमतिर्मतीनाम् । तमर्चत विश्वमित्रा हविर्भिः स नो यमः प्रतरं जीवसे धात्
He who upholds the midspace by his greatness, the sage, the wise one among the Fathers—honor him, O descendants of Viśvāmitra, with offerings; may that Yama grant us a safe crossing for life.
आ रोहत दिवमुत्तमामृषयो मा बिभीतन । सोमपाः सोमपायिन इदं वः क्रियते हविरगन्म ज्योतिरुत्तमम्
Ascend to the highest heaven, O seers, do not be afraid; drinkers of Soma, for you this offering is made—we have reached the highest light.
प्र केतुना बृहता भात्यग्निरा रोदसी वृषभो रोरवीति । दिवश्चिदन्तादुपमामुदानडपामुपस्थे महिषो ववर्ध
With great radiance Agni shines forth as a signal, the bull roars between heaven and earth; even at the ends of the sky he rises up, the great buffalo has grown in the lap of the waters.
नाके सुपर्णमुप यत्पतन्तं ह्र्दा वेनन्तो अभ्यचक्षत त्वा । हिरण्यपक्षं वरुणस्य दूतं यमस्य योनौ शकुनं भुरन्युम्
In the sky, when the beautiful-winged one flies, those searching with the heart have seen you; the golden-winged messenger of Varuṇa, the bird, the swift one, in Yama's abode.
इन्द्र क्रतुं न आ भर पिता पुत्रेभ्यो यथा । शिक्षा णो अस्मिन् पुरुहूत यामनि जीवा ज्योतिरशीमहि
Indra, bring us strength as a father to his sons; teach us, much-invoked one, on this path, that we may attain living light.
अपूपापिहितान् कुम्भान् यांस्ते देवा अधारयन् । ते ते सन्तु स्वधावन्तो मधुमन्तो घृतश्चुतः
The jars covered with cakes, which the gods placed for you—may they be full of offering, sweet, and overflowing with ghee.
यास्ते धाना अनुकिरामि तिलमिश्रा स्वधावतीः । तास्ते सन्तु विभ्वीः प्रभ्वीस्तास्ते यमो राजानु मन्यताम्
The grains I scatter for you, mixed with sesame, full of offering—may they be abundant and powerful; may King Yama accept them.
पुनर्देहि वनस्पते य एष निहितस्त्वयि । यथा यमस्य सादन आसातौ विदथा वदन्
Give back again, O tree, what is placed within you; as at the seat of Yama, let him sit, speaking at the assembly.
