अमासि मात्रां स्वरगामायुष्मान् भूयासम् । यथापरं न मासातै शते शरत्सु नो पुरा
May I not be separated from my mother, may I attain the realm of heaven, may I be endowed with long life. May I not depart before my allotted time, nor be struck down among the hundred arrows, nor before my time.
प्राणो अपानो व्यान आयुश्चक्षुर्दृशये सूर्याय । अपरिपरेण पथा यमराज्ञः पितॄन् गच्छ
Breath, outgoing breath, diffused breath, life, and sight for seeing the sun—by the unerring path, go to the ancestors under the rule of Yama.
ये अग्रवः शशमानाः परेयुर्हित्वा द्वेषांस्यनपत्यवन्तः । ते द्यामुदित्याविदन्त लोकं नाकस्य पृष्ठे अधि दीध्यानाः
Those who were foremost, who rejoiced, who passed beyond, having abandoned hatred and childlessness—they discovered the world of heaven, shining on the summit of the sky.
उदन्वती द्यौरवमा पीलुमतीति मध्यमा । तृतीया ह प्रद्यौरिति यस्यां पितर आसते
The sky is full of water, the middle region is abundant, the third is called the highest heaven, where the ancestors dwell.
ये न पितुः पितरो ये पितामहा य आविविशुरुर्वन्तरिक्षम् । य आक्षियन्ति पृथिवीमुत द्यां तेभ्यः पितृभ्यो नमसा विधेम
Those who are the fathers of our father, those who are grandfathers, who entered the vast midspace, who oversee the earth and the sky—to those ancestors we offer reverent homage.
इदमिद्वा उ नापरं दिवि पश्यसि सूर्यम् । माता पुत्रं यथा सिचाभ्येनं भूम ऊर्णुहि
Now you will not see the sun in the sky again. As a mother wraps her child, so may the earth enfold you.
{११} इदमिद्वा उ नापरं जरस्यन्यदितोऽपरम् । जाया पतिमिव वाससाभ्येनं भूम ऊर्णुहि
Now you will not see old age or anything else hereafter. As a wife wraps her husband with a garment, so may the earth enfold you.
अभि त्वोर्णोमि पृथिव्या मातुर्वस्त्रेण भद्रया । जीवेषु भद्रं तन् मयि स्वधा पितृषु सा त्वयि
I wrap you with the auspicious garment of Mother Earth. May good fortune be among the living, may sustenance be with the ancestors, and may it be with you.
अग्नीषोमा पथिकृता स्योनं देवेभ्यो रत्नं दधथुर्वि लोकम् । उप प्रेष्यन्तं पूषणं यो वहात्यञ्जोयानैः पथिभिस्तत्र गच्छतम्
Agni and Soma, makers of the path, have placed the precious abode among the gods. Send forth Pūṣan, who carries the departed with swift chariots along the paths; let them go there.
पूषा त्वेतश्च्यावयतु प्र विद्वान् अनष्टपशुर्भुवनस्य गोपाः । स त्वैतेभ्यः परि ददत्पितृभ्योऽग्निर्देवेभ्यः सुविदत्रियेभ्यः
Let Pūṣan, wise and protector of beings, drive you forth, he who loses no cattle. He gives to these ancestors, and Agni gives to the gods who grant good gifts.
आयुर्विश्वायुः परि पातु त्वा पूषा त्वा पातु प्रपथे पुरस्तात्। यत्रासते सुकृतो यत्र त ईयुस्तत्र त्वा देवः सविता दधातु
May the life-force, universal life, protect you all around. May Pūṣan guard you on the forward path. Where the righteous dwell, where they have gone, there may the god Savitṛ place you.
इमौ युनज्मि ते वह्नी असुनीताय वोढवे । ताभ्यां यमस्य सादनं समितिश्चाव गच्छतात्
I yoke these two fires for you, for leading forth the breath. With them, may you reach the seat of Yama and the assembly.
एतत्त्वा वासः प्रथमं न्वागन्न् अपैतदूह यदिहाबिभः पुरा । इष्टापूर्तमनुसंक्राम विद्वान् यत्र ते दत्तं बहुधा विबन्धुषु
This is your first garment, indeed it has come. Let it depart, which you wore here before. Pass on, wise one, to the reward of offerings and good deeds, where your gifts are distributed among many relatives.
अग्नेर्वर्म परि गोभिर्व्ययस्व सं प्रोर्णुष्व मेदसा पीवसा च । नेत्त्वा धृष्णुर्हरसा जर्हृषाणो दधृग्विधक्षन् परीङ्खयातै
Put on the armor of Agni, surrounded by cows. Cover yourself with fat and marrow. May you, strong and eager, be led forth by force, and may you reach the place without delay.
दण्डं हस्तादाददानो गतासोः सह श्रोत्रेण वर्चसा बलेन । अत्रैव त्वमिह वयं सुवीरा विश्वा मृधो अभिमातीर्जयेम
Taking the staff from the hand, with departed breath, with hearing, brilliance, and strength—here, together, may we, heroic, overcome all hostilities and adversaries.
धनुर्हस्तादाददानो मृतस्य सह क्षत्रेण वर्चसा बलेन । समागृभाय वसु भूरि पुष्टमर्वाङ्त्वमेह्युप जीवलोकम्
Taking the bow from the hand of the deceased, with power, brilliance, and strength—gathering wealth and abundant nourishment, come near, return to the world of the living.
इयं नारी पतिलोकं वृणाना नि पद्यत उप त्वा मर्त्य प्रेतम् । धर्मं पुराणमनुपालयन्ती तस्यै प्रजां द्रविणं चेह धेहि
This woman, choosing the world of her husband, steps forward to you, mortal departed. Following the ancient law, place offspring and wealth here for her.
उदीर्ष्व नार्यभि जीवलोकं गतासुमेतमुप शेष एहि । हस्तग्राभस्य दधिषोस्तवेदं पत्युर्जनित्वमभि सं बभूथ
Arise, woman, go to the world of the living. Come, join this one whose breath has departed. By the grasp of the hand, you have become the mother of your husband; you are united with him.
अपश्यं युवतिं नीयमानां जीवां मृतेभ्यः परिणीयमानाम् । अन्धेन यत्तमसा प्रावृतासीत्प्राक्तो अपाचीमनयं तदेनाम्
I saw a young woman being led away, living, set apart from the dead; she was enveloped in blind darkness, but I brought her back by the former path.
प्रजानत्यघ्न्ये जीवलोकं देवानां पन्थामनुसंचरन्ती । अयं ते गोपतिस्तं जुषस्व स्वर्गं लोकमधि रोहयैनम्
O sinless one, you know the world of the living, following the path of the gods; this is your guardian, accept him, and ascend to the heavenly world with him.
उप द्यामुप वेतसमवत्तरो नदीनाम् । अग्ने पित्तमपामसि
Rise up to the sky, rise to the sacred grass, descend to the rivers; O Agni, we remove the bile from the waters.
यं त्वमग्ने समदहस्तमु निर्वापय पुनः । क्याम्बूरत्र रोहतु शाण्डदूर्वा व्यल्कशा
Whomever you, O Agni, have equally consumed, extinguish him again; let him rise here with water, with the sacred grass, with the spreading shoots.
इदं त एकं पुर ऊ त एकं तृतीयेन ज्योतिषा सं विशस्व । संवेशने तन्वा चारुरेधि प्रियो देवानां परमे सधस्थे
This is your one place before, that is your one place; with the third light, enter together; in the resting place, unite with your body, becoming dear to the gods in the highest abode.
उत्तिष्ठ प्रेहि प्र द्रवौकः कृणुष्व सलिले सधस्थे । तत्र त्वं पितृभिः संविदानः सं सोमेन मदस्व सं स्वधाभिः
Rise, go forth, move to your dwelling in the waters; there, united with the Fathers, rejoice with Soma, rejoice with the offerings.
प्र च्यवस्व तन्वं सं भरस्व मा ते गात्रा वि हायि मो शरीरम् । मनो निविष्टमनुसंविशस्व यत्र भूमेर्जुषसे तत्र गच्छ
Shake off your body, gather yourself together; let not your limbs be scattered, nor your body; enter with your settled mind, go where you are welcomed on earth.
वर्चसा मां पितरः सोम्यासो अञ्जन्तु देवा मधुना घृतेन । चक्षुषे मा प्रतरं तारयन्तो जरसे मा जरदष्टिं वर्धन्तु
May the Fathers who delight in Soma anoint me with radiance, may the gods with honey and ghee; may they lead me across for sight, may they increase old age for me with a toothless mouth.
