कृत्रिमः कण्टकः शतदन् य एषः । अपास्याः केश्यं मलमप शीर्षण्यं लिखात्
This artificial thorn with a hundred points—cast it away, remove the impurity from the hair, remove the defilement from the head.
अङ्गादङ्गाद्वयमस्या अप यक्ष्मं नि दध्मसि । तन् मा प्रापत्पृथिवीं मोत देवान् दिवं मा प्रापदुर्वन्तरिक्षम् । अपो मा प्रापन् मलमेतदग्ने यमं मा प्रापत्पितॄंश्च सर्वान्
From each limb of hers, we drive away disease; may it not reach the earth, nor the gods, nor the sky, nor the midspace; may it not reach the waters, nor this impurity, O Agni; may it not reach Yama nor all the ancestors.
सं त्वा नह्यामि पयसा पृथिव्याः सं त्वा नह्यामि पयसौषधीनाम् । सं त्वा नह्यामि प्रजया धनेन सा संनद्धा सनुहि वाजमेमम्
I bind you together with the essence of the earth, I bind you together with the essence of the plants, I bind you together with offspring and wealth; thus joined, be steadfast in this strength.
{१३} अमोऽहमस्मि सा त्वं सामाहमस्म्यृक्त्वं द्यौरहं पृथिवी त्वम् । ताविह सं भवाव प्रजामा जनयावहै
I am the chant, you are the song; I am the Sāman, you are the Ṛc; I am the sky, you are the earth; thus, let us unite here and generate offspring.
जनियन्ति नावग्रवः पुत्रियन्ति सुदानवः । अरिष्टासू सचेवहि बृहते वाजसातये
Let the boats bear offspring, let the generous ones beget sons; live together without harm for the gaining of great strength.
ये पितरो वधूदर्शा इमं वहतुमागमन् । ते अस्यै वध्वै संपत्न्यै प्रजावच्छर्म यच्छन्तु
The ancestors who saw the bride have come to carry her; may they grant this bride, the wife, a protective shelter full of offspring.
येदं पूर्वागन् रशनायमाना प्रजामस्यै द्रविणं चेह दत्त्वा । तां वहन्त्वगतस्यानु पन्थां विराडियं सुप्रजा अत्यजैषीत्
Those who came before, girded with the belt, having given offspring and wealth to her here—may they carry her along the path of those who have gone, may she, radiant and of good offspring, surpass them.
प्र बुध्यस्व सुबुधा बुध्यमाना दीर्घायुत्वाय शतशारदाय । गृहान् गच्छ गृहपत्नी यथासो दीर्घं त आयुः सविता कृणोतु
Awaken, awaken well, being awakened for a long life of a hundred autumns; go to the house as the mistress of the house; may Savitṛ grant you long life.
व्रात्य आसीदीयमान एव स प्रजापतिं समैरयत्
There was a Vrātya, just being born; he approached Prajāpati.
स प्रजापतिः सुवर्णमात्मन्न् अपश्यत्तत्प्राजनयत्
Prajāpati saw gold in himself; he generated that.
तदेकमभवत्तल्ललाममभवत्तन् महदभवत्तज्ज्येष्ठमभवत्तद्ब्रह्माभवत्तत्तपोऽभवत्तत्सत्यमभवत्तेन प्राजायत
That became one; that became a mark; that became great; that became the eldest; that became Brahman; that became austerity; that became truth; by that he was born.
सोऽवर्धत स महान् अभवत्स महादेवोऽभवत्
He grew; he became great; he became the great god.
स देवानामीशां पर्यैत्स ईशानोऽभवत्
He went around as the lord of the gods; he became the ruler.
स एकव्रात्योऽभवत्स धनुरादत्त तदेवेन्द्रधनुः
He became the only Vrātya; he took up a bow; that is Indra's bow.
नीलमस्योदरं लोहितं पृष्ठम्
His belly is dark, his back is red.
नीलेनैवाप्रियं भ्रातृव्यं प्रोर्णोति लोहितेन द्विषन्तं विध्यतीति ब्रह्मवादिनो वदन्ति
With the dark he covers what is unpleasant, the rival; with the red he strikes the enemy—so say the knowers of Brahman.
स उदतिष्ठत्स प्राचीं दिशमनु व्यचलत्। [१] तं बृहच्च रथन्तरं चादित्याश्च विश्वे च देवा अनुव्यचलन् । [२] बृहते च वै स रथन्तराय चादित्येभ्यश्च विश्वेभ्यश्च देवेभ्य आ वृश्चते य एवं विद्वांसं व्रात्यमुपवदति । [३] बृहतश्च वै स रथन्तरस्य चादित्यानां च विश्वेषां च देवानां प्रियं धाम भवति य एवं वेद । [४] तस्य प्राच्यां दिशि श्रद्धा पुंश्चली मित्रो मागधो विज्ञानं वासोऽहरुष्णीषं रात्री केशा हरितौ प्रवर्तौ कल्मलिर्मणिः । [५] भूतं च भविष्यच्च परिष्कन्दौ मनो विपथं।।६।। मातरिश्वा च पवमानश्च विपथवाहौ वातः सारथी रेष्मा प्रतोदः।।७।। कीर्तिश्च यशश्च पुरःसरौ ऐनं कीर्तिर्गच्छत्या यशो गच्छति य एवं वेद
He rose up, he moved toward the eastern direction; Bṛhat and Rathantara, the Ādityas, and all the gods followed him. To Bṛhat, to Rathantara, to the Ādityas, and to all the gods, he is given who thus declares the Vrātya with knowledge. He attains the dear abode of Bṛhat, of Rathantara, of the Ādityas, and of all the gods, who knows thus. In his eastern direction are Faith, the courtesan, Mitra, the bard, Knowledge, the garment, Day, the turban, Night, the hair, the two green ones, the two wheels, the impurity, the jewel; the past and the future are the two runners, Mind is the path; Mātariśvan and Pavamāna are the two path-finders, Wind is the charioteer, the reins are the goad; Fame and Glory are the forerunners—Fame goes with him, Glory goes with him, who knows thus.
[८] स उदतिष्ठत्स दक्षिणां दिशमनु व्यचलत्। [९] तं यज्ञायज्ञियं च वामदेव्यं च यज्ञश्च यजमानश्च पशवश्चानुव्यचलन् । [१०] यज्ञायज्ञियाय च वै स वामदेव्याय च यज्ञाय च यजमानाय च पशुभ्यश्चा वृश्चते य एवं विद्वांसं व्रात्यमुपवदति । [११] यज्ञायज्ञियस्य च वै स वामदेव्यस्य च यज्ञस्य च यजमानस्य च पशूनां च प्रियं धाम भवति य एवं वेद । [१२] तस्य दक्षिणायां दिश्युषाः पुंश्चली मन्त्रो मागधो विज्ञानं वासोऽहरुष्णीषं रात्री केशा हरितौ प्रवर्तौ कल्मलिर्मणिः । [१३] अमावास्या च पौर्णमासी च परिष्कन्दौ मनो विपथं मातरिश्वा च पवमानश्च विपथवाहौ वातः सारथी रेष्मा प्रतोदः कीर्तिश्च यशश्च पुरःसरौ । ऐनं कीर्तिर्गच्छत्या यशो गच्छति य एवं वेद
He rose up, he moved toward the southern direction; Sacrifice and Sacrificer, Vāmadeva, the sacrificial rite, the sacrificer, and the cattle followed him. To Sacrifice, to Vāmadeva, to the sacrificial rite, to the sacrificer, and to the cattle, he is given who thus declares the Vrātya with knowledge. He attains the dear abode of Sacrifice, of Vāmadeva, of the sacrificial rite, of the sacrificer, and of the cattle, who knows thus. In his southern direction are Dawn, the courtesan, the Mantra, the bard, Knowledge, the garment, Day, the turban, Night, the hair, the two green ones, the two wheels, the impurity, the jewel; New Moon and Full Moon are the two runners, Mind is the path; Mātariśvan and Pavamāna are the two path-finders, Wind is the charioteer, the reins are the goad; Fame and Glory are the forerunners—Fame goes with him, Glory goes with him, who knows thus.
[१४] स उदतिष्ठत्स प्रतीचीं दिशमनु व्यचलत्। [१५] तं वैरूपं च वैराजं चापश्च वरुणश्च राजानुव्यचलन् । [१६] वैरूपाय च वै स वैराजाय चाद्भ्यश्च वरुणाय च राज्ञ आ वृश्चते य एवं विद्वांसं व्रात्यमुपवदति । [१७] वैरूपस्य च वै स वैराजस्य चापां च वरुणस्य च राज्ञः प्रियं धाम भवति य एवं वेद । [१८] तस्य प्रतीच्यां दिशीरा पुंश्चली हसो मागधो विज्ञानं वासोऽहरुष्णीषं रात्री केशा हरितौ प्रवर्तौ कल्मलिर्मणिः । [१९] अहश्च रात्री च परिष्कन्दौ मनो विपथं मातरिश्वा च पवमानश्च विपथवाहौ वातः सारथी रेष्मा प्रतोदः कीर्तिश्च यशश्च पुरःसरौ । ऐनं कीर्तिर्गच्छत्या यशो गच्छति य एवं वेद
He rose and moved toward the western direction. Vairūpa, Vairāja, the Waters, and Varuṇa the king followed him. To Vairūpa, to Vairāja, to the Waters, and to Varuṇa the king, he is joined who thus speaks of the learned Vrātya. For Vairūpa, for Vairāja, for the Waters, and for Varuṇa the king, he becomes a beloved abode who knows thus. In the western direction, there are the courtesan, laughter, the Magadhan, knowledge, clothing, the diadem of day, night as hair, the two green ones, movement, stain, and jewel. Day and night are the coursers; mind is the path; Mātariśvan and Pavamāna are the path-goers; wind is the charioteer; reins are the whip; fame and glory are the forerunners. Fame goes to him, glory goes to him, who knows thus.
[२०] स उदतिष्ठत्स उदीचीं दिशमनु व्यचलत्। [२१] तं श्यैतं च नौधसं च सप्तर्षयश्च सोमश्च राजानुव्यचलन् । [२२] श्यैताय च वै स नौधसाय च सप्तर्षिभ्यश्च सोमाय च राज्ञ आ वृश्चते य एवं विद्वांसं व्रात्यमुपवदति । [२३] श्यैतस्य च वै स नौधसस्य च सप्तर्षीणां च सोमस्य च राज्ञः प्रियं धाम भवति य एवं वेद । [२४] तस्योदीच्यां दिशि विद्युत्पुंश्चली स्तनयित्नुर्मागधो विज्ञानं वासोऽहरुष्णीषं रात्री केशा हरितौ प्रवर्तौ कल्मलिर्मणिः । [२५] श्रुतं च विश्रुतं च परिष्कन्दौ मनो विपथं मातरिश्वा च पवमानश्च विपथवाहौ वातः सारथी रेष्मा प्रतोदः [२६] कीर्तिश्च यशश्च पुरःसरौ । [२७] ऐनं कीर्तिर्गच्छत्या यशो गच्छति य एवं वेद
He rose and moved toward the northern direction. Śyaita, Naudhāsa, the Seven Sages, and Soma the king followed him. To Śyaita, to Naudhāsa, to the Seven Sages, and to Soma the king, he is joined who thus speaks of the learned Vrātya. For Śyaita, for Naudhāsa, for the Seven Sages, and for Soma the king, he becomes a beloved abode who knows thus. In the northern direction, there are lightning as courtesan, thunder as Magadhan, knowledge, clothing, the diadem of day, night as hair, the two green ones, movement, stain, and jewel. Heard and renowned are the coursers; mind is the path; Mātariśvan and Pavamāna are the path-goers; wind is the charioteer; reins are the whip; fame and glory are the forerunners. Fame goes to him, glory goes to him, who knows thus.
स संवत्सरमूर्ध्वोऽतिष्ठत्तं देवा अब्रुवन् व्रात्य किं नु तिष्ठसीति
He stood upright for a year; the gods said to him, 'Vrātya, why do you stand?'
सोऽब्रवीदासन्दीं मे सं भरन्त्विति
He replied, 'Let them bring me a seat.'
तस्मै व्रात्यायासन्दीं समभरन्
For the Vrātya, they brought a seat.
तस्या ग्रीष्मश्च वसन्तश्च द्वौ पादावास्तां शरच्च वर्षाश्च द्वौ
Of it, summer and spring were two legs; autumn and rainy season were two.
बृहच्च रथन्तरं चानूच्ये आस्तां यज्ञायज्ञियं च वामदेव्यं च तिरश्च्ये
Bṛhat and Rathantara were placed at the front; Yajñāyajniya and Vāmadeva were placed at the side.
ऋचः प्राञ्चस्तन्तवो यजूंषि तिर्यञ्चः
The Ṛg verses were the forward threads; the Yajus verses were the crosswise ones.
वेद आस्तरणं ब्रह्मोपबर्हणम्
The Veda was the covering; Brahman was the cushion.
सामासाद उद्गीथोऽपश्रयः
The Sāma was the seat; the Udgītha was the support.
तामासन्दीं व्रात्य आरोहत्
The Vrātya ascended that seat.
तस्य देवजनाः परिष्कन्दा आसन्त्संकल्पाः प्रहाय्या विश्वानि भूतान्युपसदः
For him, the divine beings were the coursers; intentions, desires, all creatures were the attendants.
