सीसे मलं सादयित्वा शीर्षक्तिमुपबर्हणे । अव्यामसिक्न्यां मृष्ट्वा शुद्धा भवत यज्ञियाः
Having removed the impurity from the head, strengthening the crown, having cleansed with the unmeasured river, you become pure, fit for the sacrifice.
{८} परं मृत्यो अनु परेहि पन्थां यस्त एष इतरो देवयानात्। चक्षुष्मते शृण्वते ते ब्रवीमीहेमे वीरा बहवो भवन्तु
Go beyond, O Death, follow the path that is other than the one leading to the gods; I speak to you who have sight and hearing—may many heroes be with you.
इमे जीवा वि मृतैराववृत्रन्न् अभूद्भद्रा देवहूतिर्नो अद्य । प्राञ्चो अगाम नृतये हसाय सुवीरासो विदथमा वदेम
These living ones have turned away from the dead; today, the invocation of the gods has become auspicious for us. We have come forward for dance and laughter; being strong, may we speak in the assembly.
इमं जीवेभ्यः परिधिं दधामि मैषां नु गादपरो अर्थमेतम् । शतं जीवन्तः शरदः पुरूचीस्तिरो मृत्युं दधतां पर्वतेन
I set this boundary for the living; let not the other cross over to this purpose. May they live a hundred autumns, many in number, placing a mountain between themselves and death.
आ रोहतायुर्जरसं वृणाना अनुपूर्वं यतमाना यति स्थ । तान् वस्त्वष्टा सुजनिमा सजोषाः सर्वमायुर्नयतु जीवनाय
Rise up, choosing old age as your portion; striving in order, you stand firm. May the builder, with good offspring and in harmony, lead all your life to long living.
यथाहान्यनुपूर्वं भवन्ति यथ र्तव ऋतुभिर्यन्ति साकम् । यथा न पूर्वमपरो जहात्येवा धातरायूंषि कल्पयैषाम्
As the days proceed in order, as the seasons move together with their times, so let not the latter abandon the former; thus, O Creator, arrange their lifespans.
अश्मन्वती रीयते सं रभध्वं वीरयध्वं प्र तरता सखायः । अत्रा जहीत ये असन् दुरेवा अनमीवान् उत्तरेमाभि वाजान्
The stony river is to be crossed—take hold together, be strong, cross over, O friends. Here, abandon those who are evil; without sickness, let us cross over to the further shore with our prizes.
उत्तिष्ठता प्र तरता सखायोऽश्मन्वती नदी स्यन्दत इयम् । अत्रा जहीत ये असन्न् अशिवाः शिवान्त्स्योनान् उत्तरेमाभि वाजान्
Rise up, cross over, O friends; this stony river is flowing. Here, abandon those who are inauspicious; with auspicious ones, let us cross over to the further shore with our prizes.
वैश्वदेवीं वर्चसा आ रभध्वं शुद्धा भवन्तः शुचयः पावकाः । अतिक्रामन्तो दुरिता पदानि शतं हिमाः सर्ववीरा मदेम
Embrace the radiance of the universal gods, being pure, shining, and bright. Passing over the footprints of evil, may we, all victorious, rejoice for a hundred winters.
उदीचीनैः पथिभिर्वायुमद्भिरतिक्रामन्तोऽवरान् परेभिः । त्रिः सप्त कृत्व ऋषयः परेता मृत्युं प्रत्यौहन् पदयोपनेन
Crossing over by the northern paths, filled with air, and leaving behind the lower by the others—thrice seven times the sages, having departed, repelled death by stepping over with their feet.
मृत्योः पदं योपयन्त एत द्राघीय आयुः प्रतरं दधानाः । आसीना मृत्युं नुदता सधस्थेऽथ जीवासो विदथमा वदेम
Those who step over the place of death, establishing a longer life—sitting together, drive away death from the assembly; then, being alive, may we speak in the gathering.
{९} इमा नारीरविधवाः सुपत्नीराञ्जनेन सर्पिषा सं स्पृशन्ताम् । अनश्रवो अनमीवाः सुरत्ना आ रोहन्तु जनयो योनिमग्रे
Let these women, not widowed, good wives, touch themselves with ointment and clarified butter; without tears, without sickness, rich in treasures, let them ascend first to the womb of birth.
व्याकरोमि हविषाहमेतौ तौ ब्रह्मणा व्यहं कल्पयामि । स्वधां पितृभ्यो अजरां कृणोमि दीर्घेणायुषा समिमान्त्सृजामि
With offering I set these two apart; with sacred utterance I arrange them. I make the ancestral portion undiminished for the fathers; with long life I release these together.
यो नो अग्निः पितरो हृत्स्वन्तराविवेशामृतो मर्त्येषु । मय्यहं तं परि गृह्णामि देवं मा सो अस्मान् द्विक्षत मा वयं तम्
The fire that our fathers have placed within their hearts, immortal among mortals—may I receive that god within myself; may he not harm us, nor we him.
अपावृत्य गार्हपत्यात्क्रव्यादा प्रेत दक्षिणा । प्रियं पितृभ्य आत्मने ब्रह्मभ्यः कृणुता प्रियम्
Having removed the flesh-eaters from the household fire, O departed ones, to the right side—make what is dear to the fathers, to the self, and to the priests, dear.
द्विभागधनमादाय प्र क्षिणात्यवर्त्या । अग्निः पुत्रस्य ज्येष्ठस्य यः क्रव्यादनिराहितः
Taking the twofold share of wealth, he consumes what is left; the fire of the eldest son, if not removed from flesh-eating.
यत्कृषते यद्वनुते यच्च वस्नेन विन्दते । सर्वं मर्त्यस्य तन् नास्ति क्रव्याच्चेदनिराहितः
Whatever he ploughs, whatever he wins, whatever he gains with wealth—all of that does not belong to the mortal, if the flesh-eater is not removed.
अयज्ञियो हतवर्चा भवति नैनेन हविरत्तवे । छिनत्ति कृष्या गोर्धनाद्यं क्रव्यादनुवर्तते
He becomes unfit for sacrifice, his splendor is destroyed, he cannot partake of the offering; he cuts off the produce of the field, the milk of the cow, who follows the flesh-eater.
मुहुर्गृध्यैः प्र वदत्यार्तिं मर्त्यो नीत्य । क्रव्याद्यान् अग्निरन्तिकादनुविद्वान् वितावति
Again and again, with greedy desires, the mortal speaks of distress; the wise one, knowing the flesh-eaters, keeps them away from the fire.
ग्राह्या गृहाः सं सृज्यन्ते स्त्रिया यन् म्रियते पतिः । ब्रह्मैव विद्वान् एष्यो यः क्रव्यादं निरादधत्
Houses are to be seized and rebuilt when a woman's husband dies; the knower of the sacred word should approach, who removes the flesh-eater.
यद्रिप्रं शमलं चकृम यच्च दुष्कृतम् । आपो मा तस्माच्छुम्भन्त्वग्नेः संकसुकाच्च यत्
Whatever impurity or evil deed we have committed, may the waters cleanse us from that, and from what is close to the fire.
{१०} ता अधरादुदीचीराववृत्रन् प्रजानैतीः पथिभिर्देवयानैः । पर्वतस्य वृषभस्याधि पृष्ठे नवाश्चरन्ति सरितः पुराणीः
Those waters, rising from below, have flowed northward, carrying forth creatures by divine paths; on the back of the bull-like mountain, the ancient rivers move anew.
अग्ने अक्रव्यान् निः क्रव्यादं नुदा देवयजनं वह
O Agni, drive away the flesh-eater, the devourer of flesh; bring the offering to the gods.
इमं क्रव्यादा विवेशायं क्रव्यादमन्वगात्। व्याघ्रौ कृत्वा नानानं तं हरामि शिवापरम्
This flesh-eater has entered in, this flesh-eater has followed; having made them two tigers, I remove that one, leaving the auspicious one.
अन्तर्धिर्देवानां परिधिर्मनुष्याणामग्निर्गार्हपत्य उभयान् अन्तरा श्रितः
The enclosure of the gods is within, the boundary of men is outside; Agni, the householder's fire, stands between both.
जीवानामायुः प्र तिर त्वमग्ने पितॄणां लोकमपि गच्छन्तु ये मृताः । सुगार्हपत्यो वितपन्न् अरातिमुषामुषां श्रेयसीं धेह्यस्मै
O Agni, carry away the life of the living, let the dead go to the world of the ancestors; O well-established householder's fire, having driven away the enemy, grant him the better path.
सर्वान् अग्ने सहमानः सपत्नान् ऐषामूर्जं रयिमस्मासु धेहि
O Agni, enduring all rivals, place their strength and wealth among us.
इममिन्द्रं वह्निं पप्रिमन्वारभध्वं स वो निर्वक्षद्दुरितादवद्यात्। तेनाप हत शरुमापतन्तं तेन रुद्रस्य परि पातास्ताम्
Take hold of this Indra-fire, let it carry you away from harm and blame; with it, strike down the arrow that falls, with it, may Rudra's protection guard us.
अनड्वाहं प्लवमन्वारभध्वं स वो निर्वक्षद्दुरितादवद्यात्। आ रोहत सवितुर्नावमेतां षड्भिरुर्वीभिरमतिं तरेम
Take hold of this bull, this raft; let it carry you away from harm and blame; ascend this boat of Savitar—by six broad paths may we cross over safely.
अहोरात्रे अन्वेषि बिभ्रत्क्षेम्यस्तिष्ठन् प्रतरणः सुवीरः । अनातुरान्त्सुमनसस्तल्प बिभ्रज्ज्योगेव नः पुरुषगन्धिरेधि
He seeks day and night, bearing the home, standing firm as a bridge, heroic; bearing the healthy, cheerful bed, may you become fragrant for us like a yoke.
