देवाः पितरो मनुष्या गन्धर्वाप्सरसश्च ये । उच्छिष्टाज्जज्ञिरे सर्वे दिवि देवा दिविश्रितः
The gods, ancestors, humans, Gandharvas, and Apsarases; all were born from the remnant, the gods in heaven, those abiding in heaven.
11.8(११.१०) यन् मन्युर्जायामावहत्संकल्पस्य गृहादधि । क आसं जन्याः के वराः क उ ज्येष्ठवरोऽभवत्
When wrath brought forth the wife, from the house of intention; who were the offspring, who were the best, who became the eldest and the best?
तपश्चैवास्तां कर्म चान्तर्महत्यर्णवे । त आसं जन्यास्ते वरा ब्रह्म ज्येष्ठवरोऽभवत्
Austerity and action were there within the great ocean; those were the offspring, those were the best, Brahma became the eldest and the best.
दश साकमजायन्त देवा देवेभ्यः पुरा । यो वै तान् विद्यात्प्रत्यक्षं स वा अद्य महद्वदेत्
Ten together were born, the gods, formerly from the gods; whoever knows them directly, he today may declare the great.
प्राणापानौ चक्षुः श्रोत्रमक्षितिश्च क्षितिश्च या । व्यानोदानौ वाङ्मनस्ते वा आकूतिमावहन्
Breath and exhalation, sight, hearing, what is imperishable and what is perishable; expansion and upward breath, speech and mind, they brought forth intention.
अजाता आसन्न् ऋतवोऽथो धाता बृहस्पतिः । इन्द्राग्नी अश्विना तर्हि कं ते ज्येष्ठमुपासत
The seasons were unborn, then the creator, Brihaspati, Indra and Agni, the Ashvins; whom did they worship as the eldest?
तपश्चैवास्तां कर्म चान्तर्महत्यर्णवे । तपो ह जज्ञे कर्मणस्तत्ते ज्येष्ठमुपासत
Austerity and action were there within the great ocean; austerity was indeed born from action, that they worshipped as the eldest.
येत आसीद्भूमिः पूर्वा यामद्धातय इद्विदुः । यो वै तां विद्यान् नामथा स मन्येत पुराणवित्
That which was the former earth, which the creators know; whoever knows it by name, let him consider himself a knower of ancient things.
कुत इन्द्रः कुतः सोमः कुतो अग्निरजायत । कुतस्त्वष्टा समभवत्कुतो धाताजायत
From where did Indra arise, from where Soma, from where was Agni born? From where did Tvaṣṭṛ come forth, from where was Dhātṛ born?
इन्द्रादिन्द्रः सोमात्सोमो अग्नेरग्निरजायत । त्वष्टा ह जज्ञे त्वष्टुर्धातुर्धाताजायत
From Indra came Indra, from Soma came Soma, from Agni came Agni; Tvaṣṭṛ was indeed born from Tvaṣṭṛ, Dhātṛ was born from Dhātṛ.
ये त आसन् दश जाता देवा देवेभ्यः पुरा । पुत्रेभ्यो लोकं दत्त्वा कस्मिंस्ते लोक आसते
Those ten gods who were born before the other gods—having given the world to their sons, in which world do they now dwell?
{२२} यदा केशान् अस्थि स्नाव मांसं मज्जानमाभरत्। शरीरं कृत्वा पादवत्कं लोकमनु प्राविशत्
When he gathered hair, bone, sinew, flesh, and marrow, making a body with feet, into which world did he then enter?
कुतः केशान् कुतः स्नाव कुतो अस्थीन्याभरत्। अङ्गा पर्वाणि मज्जानं को मांसं कुत आभरत्
From where did he gather hair, from where sinew, from where bones? Who brought the limbs, joints, marrow, and from where did he bring flesh?
संसिचो नाम ते देवा ये संभारान्त्समभरन् । सर्वं संसिच्य मर्त्यं देवाः पुरुषमाविशन्
Those gods called the Samcicas, who gathered the materials together—having assembled everything, the gods entered the mortal man.
ऊरू पादावष्ठीवन्तौ शिरो हस्तावथो मुखम् । पृष्टीर्बर्जह्ये पार्श्वे कस्तत्समदधादृषिः
Thighs and feet with bones, head, hands, and also mouth, back, ribs, sides—who arranged all these together, O seer?
शिरो हस्तावथो मुखं जिह्वां ग्रीवाश्च कीकसाः । त्वचा प्रावृत्य सर्वं तत्संधा समदधान् मही
Head, hands, also mouth, tongue, neck, and the jaws—having covered all with skin, the earth joined them together.
यत्तच्छरीरमशयत्संधया संहितं महत्। येनेदमद्य रोचते को अस्मिन् वर्णमाभरत्
That body which lay assembled with joints, great in form—by which it now shines, who brought color into it?
सर्वे देवा उपाशिक्षन् तदजानाद्वधूः सती । ईशा वशस्य या जाया सास्मिन् वर्णमाभरत्
All the gods sought after it; the bride, being wise, knew it. She, the wife of the lord of power, brought color into it.
यदा त्वष्टा व्यतृणत्पिता त्वष्टुर्य उत्तरः । गृहं कृत्वा मर्त्यं देवाः पुरुषमाविशन्
When Tvaṣṭṛ divided, the father of Tvaṣṭṛ, and he who was after him—having made a dwelling, the gods entered the mortal man.
स्वप्नो वै तन्द्रीर्निर्ऋतिः पाप्मानो नाम देवताः । जरा खालत्यं पालित्यं शरीरमनु प्राविशन्
Sleep, drowsiness, decay, and evil—these are the names of deities; old age, baldness, and greyness entered the body.
स्तेयं दुष्कृतं वृजिनं सत्यं यज्ञो यशो बृहत्। बलं च क्षत्रमोजश्च शरीरमनु प्राविशन्
Theft, wrongdoing, sin, truth, sacrifice, great glory, strength, sovereignty, and vigor entered the body.
{२३} भूतिश्च वा अभूतिश्च रातयोऽरातयश्च याः । क्षुधश्च सर्वास्तृष्णाश्च शरीरमनु प्राविशन्
Prosperity and adversity, gifts and refusals, all forms of hunger and thirst entered the body.
निन्दाश्च वा अनिन्दाश्च यच्च हन्तेति नेति च । शरीरं श्रद्धा दक्षिणाश्रद्धा चानु प्राविशन्
Blame and blamelessness, and whatever is 'strike' or 'do not strike'—faith, generosity, and lack of faith entered the body.
विद्याश्च वा अविद्याश्च यच्चान्यदुपदेश्यम् । शरीरं ब्रह्म प्राविशदृचः सामाथो यजुः
Knowledge and ignorance, and whatever else is to be taught—the Veda, Ṛc, Sāman, and Yajus entered the body.
आनन्दा मोदाः प्रमुदोऽभीमोदमुदश्च ये । हसो नरिष्टा नृत्तानि शरीरमनु प्राविशन्
Joys, delights, pleasures, supreme joys, and happiness; laughter, harmlessness, and dances entered the body.
आलापाश्च प्रलापाश्चाभीलापलपश्च ये । शरीरं सर्वे प्राविशन्न् आयुजः प्रयुजो युजः
Speech, babbling, desires, and idle talk—all these entered the body, both those joined and those unjoined.
प्राणापानौ चक्षुः श्रोत्रमक्षितिश्च क्षितिश्च या । व्यानोदानौ वाङ्मनः शरीरेण त ईयन्ते
The in-breath and out-breath, sight and hearing, and the two earths—what is firm and what is ground—vital air and upward breath, speech and mind, all these move with the body.
आशिषश्च प्रशिषश्च संशिषो विशिषश्च याः । चित्तानि सर्वे संकल्पाः शरीरमनु प्राविशन्
Blessings and commands, permissions and distinctions—all intentions and all resolves—entered the body.
आस्तेयीश्च वास्तेयीश्च त्वरणाः कृपणाश्च याः । गुह्याः शुक्रा स्थूला अपस्ता बीभत्सावसादयन्
The tendencies to steal and to dwell, haste and misery, what is hidden, what is pure, what is gross, what is rejected, and what is repulsive—all these settled down.
अस्थि कृत्वा समिधं तदष्टापो असादयन् । रेतः कृत्वाज्यं देवाः पुरुषमाविशन्
Having made bone as the fuel-stick, those eight waters settled down; having made semen as the clarified butter, the gods entered the person.
