[२] ततश्चैनमन्याभ्यामक्षीभ्यां प्राशीर्याभ्यां चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन् । अन्धो भविष्यसीत्येनमाह । तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम् । सूर्याचन्द्रमसाभ्यामक्षीभ्याम् । ताभ्यामेनं प्राशिषं ताभ्यामेनमजीगमम् । एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः । सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद
Then, with two other eyes, they made him eat; with those, the ancient seers ate him. 'You will become blind,' thus he said to him. 'I am not the one facing downward, nor outward, nor inward, but with the eyes of the Sun and Moon. With those I made him eat, with those I attained him. This rice is indeed whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies. He indeed becomes whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies, who knows thus.'
[३] ततश्चैनमन्येन मुखेन प्राशीर्येन चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन् । मुखतस्ते प्रजा मरिष्यतीत्येनमाह । तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम् । ब्रह्मणा मुखेन । तेनैनं प्राशिषं तेनैनमजीगमम् । एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः । सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद
Then, with another mouth, they made him eat; with that, the ancient seers ate him. 'Your offspring will die from the mouth,' thus he said to him. 'I am not the one facing downward, nor outward, nor inward, but with the mouth of Brahman. With that I made him eat, with that I attained him. This rice is indeed whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies. He indeed becomes whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies, who knows thus.'
[४] ततश्चैनमन्यया जिह्वया प्राशीर्यया चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन् । जिह्वा ते मरिष्यतीत्येनमाह । तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम् । अग्नेर्जिह्वया । तयैनं प्राशिषं तयैनमजीगमम् । एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः । सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद
Then, with another tongue, they made him eat; with that, the ancient seers ate him. 'Your tongue will die,' thus he said to him. 'I am not the one facing downward, nor outward, nor inward, but with the tongue of Agni. With that I made him eat, with that I attained him. This rice is indeed whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies. He indeed becomes whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies, who knows thus.'
[५] ततश्चैनमन्यैर्दन्तैः प्राशीर्यैश्चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन् । दन्तास्ते शत्स्यन्तीत्येनमाह । तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम् । ऋतुभिर्दन्तैः । तैरेनं प्राशिषं तैरेनमजीगमम् । एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः । सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद
Then, with other teeth, they made him eat; with those, the ancient seers ate him. 'Your teeth will fall out,' thus he said to him. 'I am not the one facing downward, nor outward, nor inward, but with the teeth of the seasons. With those I made him eat, with those I attained him. This rice is indeed whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies. He indeed becomes whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies, who knows thus.'
[६] ततश्चैनमन्यैः प्राणापानैः प्राशीर्यैश्चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन् । प्राणापानास्त्वा हास्यन्तीत्येनमाह । तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम् । सप्तऋषिभिः प्राणापानैः । तैरेनं प्राशिषं तैरेनमजीगमम् । एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः । सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद
Then, with other breaths, they made him eat; with those, the ancient seers ate him. 'Your breaths will leave you,' thus he said to him. 'I am not the one facing downward, nor outward, nor inward, but with the breaths of the seven seers. With those I made him eat, with those I attained him. This rice is indeed whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies. He indeed becomes whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies, who knows thus.'
[७] ततश्चैनमन्येन व्यचसा प्राशीर्येन चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन् । राजयक्ष्मस्त्वा हनिष्यतीत्येनमाह । तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम् । अन्तरिक्षेण व्यचसा । तेनैनं प्राशिषं तेनैनमजीगमम् । एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः । सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद
Then, with another palate, they made him eat; with that, the ancient seers ate him. 'Kingly consumption will strike you,' thus he said to him. 'I am not the one facing downward, nor outward, nor inward, but with the palate of the midspace. With that I made him eat, with that I attained him. This rice is indeed whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies. He indeed becomes whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies, who knows thus.'
[८] ततश्चैनमन्येन पृष्ठेन प्राशीर्येन चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन् । विद्युत्त्वा हनिष्यतीत्येनमाह । तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम् । दिवा पृष्ठेन । तेनैनं प्राशिषं तेनैनमजीगमम् । एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः । सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद
Then, with another back, they made him eat; with that, the ancient seers ate him. 'Lightning will strike you,' thus he said to him. 'I am not the one facing downward, nor outward, nor inward, but with the back of the day. With that I made him eat, with that I attained him. This rice is indeed whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies. He indeed becomes whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies, who knows thus.'
[९] ततश्चैनमन्येनोरसा प्राशीर्येन चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन् । कृष्या न रात्स्यसीत्येनमाह । तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम् । पृथिव्योरसा । तेनैनं प्राशिषं तेनैनमजीगमम् । एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः । सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद
Then, with another marrow, they made him eat; with that, the ancient seers ate him. 'You will not eat from the field,' thus he said to him. 'I am not the one facing downward, nor outward, nor inward, but with the marrow of the earths. With that I made him eat, with that I attained him. This rice is indeed whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies. He indeed becomes whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies, who knows thus.'
[१०] ततश्चैनमन्येनोदरेण प्राशीर्येन चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन् । उदरदारस्त्वा हनिष्यतीत्येनमाह । तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम् । सत्येनोदरेण । तेनैनं प्राशिषं तेनैनमजीगमम् । एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः । सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद
Then, with another belly, they made him eat; with that, the ancient seers ate him. 'A belly disease will strike you,' thus he said to him. 'I am not the one facing downward, nor outward, nor inward, but with the belly of truth. With that I made him eat, with that I attained him. This rice is indeed whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies. He indeed becomes whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies, who knows thus.'
[११] ततश्चैनमन्येन वस्तिना प्राशीर्येन चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन् । अप्सु मरिष्यसीत्येनमाह । तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम् । समुद्रेण वस्तिना । तेनैनं प्राशिषं तेनैनमजीगमम् । एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः । सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद
Then, with another bladder, they made him eat; with that, the ancient seers ate him. 'You will die in the waters,' thus he said to him. 'I am not the one facing downward, nor outward, nor inward, but with the bladder of the ocean. With that I made him eat, with that I attained him. This rice is indeed whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies. He indeed becomes whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies, who knows thus.'
[१२] ततश्चैनमन्याभ्यामूरुभ्यां प्राशीर्याभ्यां चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन् । ऊरू ते मरिष्यत इत्येनमाह । तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम् । मित्रावरुणयोरूरुभ्याम् । ताभ्यामेनं प्राशिषं ताभ्यामेनमजीगमम् । एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः । सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद
Then, with the two thighs, with the two strong thighs, the ancient seers fed him. 'Your thighs will perish,' they said to him. But I did not feed him with thighs turned inward, nor outward, nor backward—rather, with the thighs of Mitra and Varuṇa. With those I fed him, with those I attained him. This offering is indeed whole-limbed, of all joints, of all body. Whoever knows thus becomes whole-limbed, of all joints, of all body.
[१३] ततश्चैनमन्याभ्यामष्ठीवद्भ्यां प्राशीर्याभ्यां चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन् । स्रामो भविष्यसीत्येनमाह । तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम् । त्वष्टुरष्ठीवद्भ्याम् । ताभ्यामेनं प्राशिषं ताभ्यामेनमजीगमम् । एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः । सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद
Then, with the two shanks, with the two strong shanks, the ancient seers fed him. 'You will become weary,' they said to him. But I did not feed him with shanks turned inward, nor outward, nor backward—rather, with the shanks of Tvaṣṭṛ. With those I fed him, with those I attained him. This offering is indeed whole-limbed, of all joints, of all body. Whoever knows thus becomes whole-limbed, of all joints, of all body.
[१४] ततश्चैनमन्याभ्यां पादाभ्यां प्राशीर्याभ्यां चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन् । बहुचारी भविष्यसीत्येनमाह । तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम् । अश्विनोः पादाभ्याम् । ताभ्यामेनं प्राशिषं ताभ्यामेनमजीगमम् । एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः । सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद
Then, with the two feet, with the two strong feet, the ancient seers fed him. 'You will wander much,' they said to him. But I did not feed him with feet turned inward, nor outward, nor backward—rather, with the feet of the Aśvins. With those I fed him, with those I attained him. This offering is indeed whole-limbed, of all joints, of all body. Whoever knows thus becomes whole-limbed, of all joints, of all body.
[१५] ततश्चैनमन्याभ्यां प्रपदाभ्यां प्राशीर्याभ्यां चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन् । सर्पस्त्वा हनिष्यतीत्येनमाह । तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम् । सवितुः प्रपदाभ्याम् । ताभ्यामेनं प्राशिषं ताभ्यामेनमजीगमम् । एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः । सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद
Then, with the two forefeet, with the two strong forefeet, the ancient seers fed him. 'A serpent will slay you,' they said to him. But I did not feed him with forefeet turned inward, nor outward, nor backward—rather, with the forefeet of Savitṛ. With those I fed him, with those I attained him. This offering is indeed whole-limbed, of all joints, of all body. Whoever knows thus becomes whole-limbed, of all joints, of all body.
[१६] ततश्चैनमन्याभ्यां हस्ताभ्यां प्राशीर्याभ्यां चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन् । ब्राह्मणं हनिष्यसीत्येनमाह । तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम् । ऋतस्य हस्ताभ्याम् । ताभ्यामेनं प्राशिषं ताभ्यामेनमजीगमम् । एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः । सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद
Then, with the two hands, with the two strong hands, the ancient seers fed him. 'You will slay a Brāhmaṇa,' they said to him. But I did not feed him with hands turned inward, nor outward, nor backward—rather, with the hands of Ṛta. With those I fed him, with those I attained him. This offering is indeed whole-limbed, of all joints, of all body. Whoever knows thus becomes whole-limbed, of all joints, of all body.
[१७] ततश्चैनमन्यया प्रतिष्ठया प्राशीर्यया चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन् । अप्रतिष्ठानोऽनायतनो मरिष्यसीत्येनमाह । तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम् । सत्ये प्रतिष्ठाय । तयैनं प्राशिषं तयैनमजीगमम् । एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः । सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद
Then, with another support, with a strong support, the ancient seers fed him. 'You will be without support, without foundation, you will perish,' they said to him. But I did not feed him with support turned inward, nor outward, nor backward—rather, with the support of Truth. With that I fed him, with that I attained him. This offering is indeed whole-limbed, of all joints, of all body. Whoever knows thus becomes whole-limbed, of all joints, of all body.
एतद्वै ब्रध्नस्य विष्टपं यदोदनः
This indeed is the domain of Bradhna, namely the offering.
[१] ब्रध्नलोको भवति ब्रध्नस्य विष्टपि श्रयते य एवं वेद
He attains the world of Bradhna, he rests in the domain of Bradhna, whoever knows thus.
[२] एतस्माद्वा ओदनात्त्रयस्त्रिंशतं लोकान् निरमिमीत प्रजापतिः
From this very offering, Prajāpati created thirty-three worlds.
[३] तेषां प्रज्ञानाय यज्ञमसृजत
For their understanding, he fashioned the sacrifice.
[४] स य एवं विदुष उपद्रष्टा भवति प्राणं रुणद्धि
He who knows thus becomes the overseer among those who know; he restrains the breath.
[५] न च प्राणं रुणद्धि सर्वज्यानिं जीयते
But he does not restrain the breath; he outlives all creatures.
[६] न च सर्वज्यानिं जीयते पुरैनं जरसः प्राणो जहाति
But he does not outlive all creatures; before that, breath abandons him to old age.
11.4(११.६) प्राणाय नमो यस्य सर्वमिदं वशे । यो भूतः सर्वस्येश्वरो यस्मिन्त्सर्वं प्रतिष्ठितम्
Homage to Breath, by whom all this is controlled, who is the lord of all beings, in whom all is established.
नमस्ते प्राण क्रन्दाय नमस्ते स्तनयित्नवे । नमस्ते प्राण विद्युते नमस्ते प्राण वर्षते
Homage to you, Breath, as thunderer; homage to you as the one who roars; homage to you, Breath, as lightning; homage to you, Breath, as rain.
यत्प्राण स्तनयित्नुनाभिक्रन्दत्योषधीः । प्र वीयन्ते गर्भान् दधतेऽथो बह्वीर्वि जायन्ते
When Breath, with thunder, makes the plants cry out, they grow forth, they bear offspring, and many are indeed born.
यत्प्राण ऋतावागतेऽभिक्रन्दत्योषधीः । सर्वं तदा प्र मोदते यत्किं च भूम्यामधि
When Breath, at the coming of the season, makes the plants cry out, then all delights; whatever is upon the earth rejoices.
यदा प्राणो अभ्यवर्षीद्वर्षेण पृथिवीं महीम् । पशवस्तत्प्र मोदन्ते महो वै नो भविष्यति
When Breath has rained upon the broad earth with rain, then the cattle rejoice; truly, greatness will be ours.
अभिवृष्टा ओषधयः प्राणेन समवादिरन् । आयुर्वै नः प्रातीतरः सर्वा नः सुरभीरकः
The herbs, abundantly watered, have arisen together with breath; truly, life is our most dear companion—may all be fragrant for us.
नमस्ते अस्त्वायते नमो अस्तु परायते । नमस्ते प्राण तिष्ठत आसीनायोत ते नमः
Homage to you as you approach, homage as you depart; homage to you, O breath, as you stand and as you sit—homage also to you.
