ऋचा कुम्भ्यधिहितार्त्विज्येन प्रेषिता
The hymn is placed upon the pot, sent by the officiating priest.
ब्रह्मणा परिगृहीता साम्ना पर्यूढा
Embraced by the sacred word, surrounded by the chant.
बृहदायवनं रथन्तरं दर्विः
The great Ayavana, the Rathantara, the ladle.
ऋतवः पक्तार आर्तवाः समिन्धते
The seasons are the cooks; the seasonal rites kindle the fire.
चरुं पञ्चबिलमुखं घर्मोऽभीन्धे
The sacrificial dish with five openings, the Gharma heats it.
ओदनेन यज्ञवतः सर्वे लोकाः समाप्याः
By the rice, all worlds belonging to the sacrifice are completed.
यस्मिन्त्समुद्रो द्यौर्भूमिस्त्रयोऽवरपरं श्रिताः
In which the ocean, the sky, and the earth, three, are established above and below.
यस्य देवा अकल्पन्तोच्छिष्टे षडशीतयः
For whom the gods prepare eighty-six remnants.
तं त्वौदनस्य पृच्छामि यो अस्य महिमा महान्
I ask you about the rice, whose greatness is vast.
स य ओदनस्य महिमानं विद्यात्
He who knows the greatness of the rice.
नाल्प इति ब्रूयान् नानुपसेचन इति नेदं च किं चेति
Let him not say 'it is small,' nor 'it is not sprinkled,' nor 'what is this?'
यावद्दाताभिमनस्येत तन् नाति वदेत्
As much as the giver desires, let him not speak beyond that.
ब्रह्मवादिनो वदन्ति पराञ्चमोदनं प्राशी३ः प्रत्यञ्चा३ इति
The knowers of Brahman say: 'One eats the rice facing outward, another facing inward.'
त्वमोदनं प्राशी३ त्वामोदना३ इति
'You have eaten the rice; the rice has eaten you,' thus they say.
पराञ्चं चैनं प्राशीः प्राणास्त्वा हास्यन्तीत्येनमाह
If one eats it facing outward, he says to him: 'Your life-breaths will depart.'
प्रत्यञ्चं चैनं प्राशीरपानास्त्वा हास्यन्तीत्येनमाह
If one eats it facing inward, he says to him: 'Your inhalations and exhalations will leave you.'
नैवाहमोदनं न मामोदनः
I am neither the eater of rice, nor is rice the eater of me.
ओदन एवौदनं प्राशीत्
One should eat rice as rice alone.
ततश्चैनमन्येन शीर्ष्णा प्राशीर्येन चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन् । ज्येष्ठतस्ते प्रजा मरिष्यतीत्येनमाह । तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम् । बृहस्पतिना शीर्ष्णा । तेनैनं प्राशिषं तेनैनमजीगमम् । एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः । सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद
Then, with another head, they made him eat; with that, the ancient seers ate him. 'Your offspring will die eldest,' thus he said to him. 'I am not the one facing downward, nor outward, nor inward, but with the head of Brihaspati. With that I made him eat, with that I attained him. This rice is indeed whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies. He indeed becomes whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies, who knows thus.'
[१] ततश्चैनमन्याभ्यां श्रोत्राभ्यां प्राशीर्याभ्यां चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन् । बधिरो भविष्यसीत्येनमाह । तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम् । द्यावापृथिवीभ्यां श्रोत्राभ्याम् । ताभ्यामेनं प्राशिषं ताभ्यामेनमजीगमम् । एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः । सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद
Then, with two other ears, they made him eat; with those, the ancient seers ate him. 'You will become deaf,' thus he said to him. 'I am not the one facing downward, nor outward, nor inward, but with the ears of Heaven and Earth. With those I made him eat, with those I attained him. This rice is indeed whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies. He indeed becomes whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies, who knows thus.'
[२] ततश्चैनमन्याभ्यामक्षीभ्यां प्राशीर्याभ्यां चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन् । अन्धो भविष्यसीत्येनमाह । तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम् । सूर्याचन्द्रमसाभ्यामक्षीभ्याम् । ताभ्यामेनं प्राशिषं ताभ्यामेनमजीगमम् । एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः । सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद
Then, with two other eyes, they made him eat; with those, the ancient seers ate him. 'You will become blind,' thus he said to him. 'I am not the one facing downward, nor outward, nor inward, but with the eyes of the Sun and Moon. With those I made him eat, with those I attained him. This rice is indeed whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies. He indeed becomes whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies, who knows thus.'
[३] ततश्चैनमन्येन मुखेन प्राशीर्येन चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन् । मुखतस्ते प्रजा मरिष्यतीत्येनमाह । तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम् । ब्रह्मणा मुखेन । तेनैनं प्राशिषं तेनैनमजीगमम् । एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः । सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद
Then, with another mouth, they made him eat; with that, the ancient seers ate him. 'Your offspring will die from the mouth,' thus he said to him. 'I am not the one facing downward, nor outward, nor inward, but with the mouth of Brahman. With that I made him eat, with that I attained him. This rice is indeed whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies. He indeed becomes whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies, who knows thus.'
[४] ततश्चैनमन्यया जिह्वया प्राशीर्यया चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन् । जिह्वा ते मरिष्यतीत्येनमाह । तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम् । अग्नेर्जिह्वया । तयैनं प्राशिषं तयैनमजीगमम् । एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः । सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद
Then, with another tongue, they made him eat; with that, the ancient seers ate him. 'Your tongue will die,' thus he said to him. 'I am not the one facing downward, nor outward, nor inward, but with the tongue of Agni. With that I made him eat, with that I attained him. This rice is indeed whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies. He indeed becomes whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies, who knows thus.'
[५] ततश्चैनमन्यैर्दन्तैः प्राशीर्यैश्चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन् । दन्तास्ते शत्स्यन्तीत्येनमाह । तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम् । ऋतुभिर्दन्तैः । तैरेनं प्राशिषं तैरेनमजीगमम् । एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः । सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद
Then, with other teeth, they made him eat; with those, the ancient seers ate him. 'Your teeth will fall out,' thus he said to him. 'I am not the one facing downward, nor outward, nor inward, but with the teeth of the seasons. With those I made him eat, with those I attained him. This rice is indeed whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies. He indeed becomes whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies, who knows thus.'
[६] ततश्चैनमन्यैः प्राणापानैः प्राशीर्यैश्चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन् । प्राणापानास्त्वा हास्यन्तीत्येनमाह । तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम् । सप्तऋषिभिः प्राणापानैः । तैरेनं प्राशिषं तैरेनमजीगमम् । एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः । सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद
Then, with other breaths, they made him eat; with those, the ancient seers ate him. 'Your breaths will leave you,' thus he said to him. 'I am not the one facing downward, nor outward, nor inward, but with the breaths of the seven seers. With those I made him eat, with those I attained him. This rice is indeed whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies. He indeed becomes whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies, who knows thus.'
[७] ततश्चैनमन्येन व्यचसा प्राशीर्येन चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन् । राजयक्ष्मस्त्वा हनिष्यतीत्येनमाह । तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम् । अन्तरिक्षेण व्यचसा । तेनैनं प्राशिषं तेनैनमजीगमम् । एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः । सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद
Then, with another palate, they made him eat; with that, the ancient seers ate him. 'Kingly consumption will strike you,' thus he said to him. 'I am not the one facing downward, nor outward, nor inward, but with the palate of the midspace. With that I made him eat, with that I attained him. This rice is indeed whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies. He indeed becomes whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies, who knows thus.'
[८] ततश्चैनमन्येन पृष्ठेन प्राशीर्येन चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन् । विद्युत्त्वा हनिष्यतीत्येनमाह । तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम् । दिवा पृष्ठेन । तेनैनं प्राशिषं तेनैनमजीगमम् । एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः । सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद
Then, with another back, they made him eat; with that, the ancient seers ate him. 'Lightning will strike you,' thus he said to him. 'I am not the one facing downward, nor outward, nor inward, but with the back of the day. With that I made him eat, with that I attained him. This rice is indeed whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies. He indeed becomes whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies, who knows thus.'
[९] ततश्चैनमन्येनोरसा प्राशीर्येन चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन् । कृष्या न रात्स्यसीत्येनमाह । तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम् । पृथिव्योरसा । तेनैनं प्राशिषं तेनैनमजीगमम् । एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः । सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद
Then, with another marrow, they made him eat; with that, the ancient seers ate him. 'You will not eat from the field,' thus he said to him. 'I am not the one facing downward, nor outward, nor inward, but with the marrow of the earths. With that I made him eat, with that I attained him. This rice is indeed whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies. He indeed becomes whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies, who knows thus.'
[१०] ततश्चैनमन्येनोदरेण प्राशीर्येन चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन् । उदरदारस्त्वा हनिष्यतीत्येनमाह । तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम् । सत्येनोदरेण । तेनैनं प्राशिषं तेनैनमजीगमम् । एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः । सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद
Then, with another belly, they made him eat; with that, the ancient seers ate him. 'A belly disease will strike you,' thus he said to him. 'I am not the one facing downward, nor outward, nor inward, but with the belly of truth. With that I made him eat, with that I attained him. This rice is indeed whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies. He indeed becomes whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies, who knows thus.'
[११] ततश्चैनमन्येन वस्तिना प्राशीर्येन चैतं पूर्व ऋषयः प्राश्नन् । अप्सु मरिष्यसीत्येनमाह । तं वा अहं नार्वाञ्चं न पराञ्चं न प्रत्यञ्चम् । समुद्रेण वस्तिना । तेनैनं प्राशिषं तेनैनमजीगमम् । एष वा ओदनः सर्वाङ्गः सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः । सर्वाङ्ग एव सर्वपरुः सर्वतनूः सं भवति य एवं वेद
Then, with another bladder, they made him eat; with that, the ancient seers ate him. 'You will die in the waters,' thus he said to him. 'I am not the one facing downward, nor outward, nor inward, but with the bladder of the ocean. With that I made him eat, with that I attained him. This rice is indeed whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies. He indeed becomes whole in all limbs, all joints, all bodies, who knows thus.'
