उपश्वसे द्रुवये सीदता यूयं वि विच्यध्वं यज्ञियासस्तुषैः । श्रिया समानान् अति सर्वान्त्स्यामाधस्पदं द्विषतस्पादयामि
Sit for the stable, for the firm, you all; separate with worshipful praises. Surpassing all in beauty, may I place the enemy in a lowly position.
परेहि नारि पुनरेहि क्षिप्रमपां त्वा गोष्ठो अध्यरुक्षद्भराय । तासां गृह्णीताद्यतमा यज्ञिया असन् विभाज्य धीरीतरा जहीतात्
Go forth, woman, return again quickly; the cow-pen has been entered for bearing. Let the worshipful ones take those striving; let the wise, the more discerning, leave the divided.
एमा अगुर्योषितः शुम्भमाना उत्तिष्ठ नारि तवसं रभस्व । सुपत्नी पत्या प्रजया प्रजावत्या त्वागन् यज्ञः प्रति कुम्भं गृभाय
These young women, shining, rise up, woman, seize strength. As a good wife, with offspring, with progeny, the sacrifice has led you to the vessel; grasp it.
ऊर्जो भागो निहितो यः पुरा व ऋषिप्रशिष्टाप आ भरैताः । अयं यज्ञो गातुविन् नाथवित्प्रजाविदुग्रः पशुविद्वीरविद्वो अस्तु
The portion of nourishment that was set for you before, by the wise and the seers, bring it. May this sacrifice be a path-finder, a protector, rich in offspring, cattle, and heroes.
अग्ने चरुर्यज्ञियस्त्वाध्यरुक्षच्छुचिस्तपिष्ठस्तपसा तपैनम् । आर्षेया दैवा अभिसंगत्य भागमिमं तपिष्ठा ऋतुभिस्तपन्तु
O Agni, the pleasing, worshipful one, has entered, pure, most heated; let him heat this with his heat. The seers and gods, gathering, let them heat this portion with the seasons.
शुद्धाः पूता योषितो यज्ञिया इमा आपश्चरुमव सर्पन्तु शुभ्राः । अदुः प्रजां बहुलां पशून् नः पक्तौदनस्य सुकृतामेतु लोकम्
Pure, cleansed women, worshipful, let these waters, pure, flow upon the pleasing offering. May abundant offspring and cattle come to us; may the world of the righteous be attained through cooked food.
ब्रह्मणा शुद्धा उत पूता घृतेन सोमस्यांशवस्तण्डुला यज्ञिया इमे । अपः प्र विशत प्रति गृह्णातु वश्चरुरिमं पक्त्वा सुकृतामेत लोकम्
Purified by Brahman, cleansed with ghee, these worshipful grains are portions of Soma. Enter the waters, let the great earth receive the offering; having cooked, may we attain the world of the righteous.
उरुः प्रथस्व महता महिम्ना सहस्रपृष्ठः सुकृतस्य लोके । पितामहाः पितरः प्रजोपजाहं पक्ता पञ्चदशस्ते अस्मि
Spread wide, O vast one, with great greatness, thousand-backed, in the world of the righteous. Grandfathers, fathers, offspring, I have cooked fifteen for you.
सहस्रपृष्ठः शतधारो अक्षितो ब्रह्मौदनो देवयानः स्वर्गः । अमूंस्त आ दधामि प्रजया रेषयैनान् बलिहाराय मृडतान् मह्यमेव
Thousand-backed, hundred-streamed, undiminished, Brahman-cooked, divine, heavenly. I place them there with offspring; let them rejoice for the offering, let them be gracious to me.
{२} उदेहि वेदिं प्रजया वर्धयैनां नुदस्व रक्षः प्रतरं धेह्येनाम् । श्रिया समानान् अति सर्वान्त्स्यामाधस्पदं द्विषतस्पादयामि
Rise, increase the altar with offspring, drive away the demon, set the crossing for it. Surpassing all in beauty, may I place the enemy in a lowly position.
अभ्यावर्तस्व पशुभिः सहैनां प्रत्यङ्ङेनां देवताभिः सहैधि । मा त्वा प्रापच्छपथो माभिचारः स्वे क्षेत्रे अनमीवा वि राज
Return together with the cattle, and bring her back with the deities; come back with her, accompanied by the gods. Let no hostile path or sorcery reach you; reign, free from sickness, in your own field.
ऋतेन तष्टा मनसा हितैषा ब्रह्मौदनस्य विहिता वेदिरग्रे । अंसद्रीं शुद्धामुप धेहि नारि तत्रौदनं सादय दैवानाम्
With truth the carpenter, with mind the well-wisher, established the altar of the sacrificial porridge at the forefront. Place the pure, sacred shoulder-piece, O woman, and there prepare the porridge for the gods.
अदितेर्हस्तां स्रुचमेतां द्वितीयां सप्तऋषयो भूतकृतो यामकृण्वन् । सा गात्राणि विदुष्योदनस्य दर्विर्वेद्यामध्येनं चिनोतु
This ladle, the second hand of Aditi, was fashioned by the Seven Sages, creators of beings. Let it know the limbs of the porridge; let the spoon arrange it in the middle of the altar.
शृतं त्वा हव्यमुप सीदन्तु दैवा निःसृप्याग्नेः पुनरेनान् प्र सीद । सोमेन पूतो जठरे सीद ब्रह्मणामार्षेयास्ते मा रिषन् प्राशितारः
Let the gods approach you, the cooked oblation; having poured out from Agni, sit here again. Purified by Soma, settle in the stomachs of the Brahmans; may the descendants of the seers, the eaters, not come to harm.
सोम राजन्त्संज्ञानमा वपैभ्यः सुब्राह्मणा यतमे त्वोपसीदान् । ऋषीन् आर्षेयांस्तपसोऽधि जातान् ब्रह्मौदने सुहवा जोहवीमि
King Soma, bestow understanding upon these, O well-spoken one, come near with your favor. I invoke the seers, descendants of seers, born of austerity, to the sacrificial porridge, as gracious guests.
शुद्धाः पूता योषितो यज्ञिया इमा ब्रह्मणां हस्तेषु प्रपृथक्सादयामि । यत्काम इदमभिषिञ्चामि वोऽहमिन्द्रो मरुत्वान्त्स ददादिदं मे
Pure, purified, worthy women are these, whom I set apart in the hands of the Brahmans. For whatever desire I anoint you with this, may Indra, accompanied by the Maruts, grant this to me.
इदं मे ज्योतिरमृतं हिरण्यं पक्वं क्षेत्रात्कामदुघा म एषा । इदं धनं नि दधे ब्राह्मणेषु कृण्वे पन्थां पितृषु यः स्वर्गः
This is my light, immortality, gold, the cooked food, the wish-yielding cow from the field. This wealth I place among the Brahmans; I make the path to the ancestors, which is heavenly.
अग्नौ तुषान् आ वप जातवेदसि परः कम्बूकामप मृड्ढि दूरम् । एतं शुश्रुम गृहराजस्य भागमथो विद्म निर्ऋतेर्भागधेयम्
Cast the husks into Agni, Jātavedas; remove the outer chaff far away. Thus we have heard the share of the house-lord; now we know the portion assigned to Nirṛti.
श्राम्यतः पचतो विद्धि सुन्वतः पन्थां स्वर्गमधि रोहयैनम् । येन रोहात्परमापद्य यद्वय उत्तमं नाकं परमं व्योम
Know the path to heaven for the weary, the cook, and the offerer; raise him up to the heavenly way. By which ascent one goes to the highest, to the supreme heaven, the highest firmament.
{३} बभ्रेरध्वर्यो मुखमेतद्वि मृड्ढ्याज्याय लोकं कृणुहि प्रविद्वान् । घृतेन गात्रानु सर्वा वि मृड्ढि कृण्वे पन्थां पितृषु यः स्वर्गः
O Adhvaryu, cleanse the mouth of the ram; make it fit for the ghee, knowing well. With ghee anoint all its limbs; I make the path to the ancestors, which is heavenly.
बभ्रे रक्षः समदमा वपैभ्योऽब्राह्मणा यतमे त्वोपसीदान् । पुरीषिणः प्रथमानाः पुरस्तादार्षेयास्ते मा रिषन् प्राशितारः
O ram, drive away the demon for these; O well-spoken one, come near with your favor. The first, the ancient ones, the ancestors, may the descendants of seers, the eaters, not come to harm.
आर्षेयेषु नि दध ओदन त्वा नानार्षेयाणामप्यस्त्यत्र । अग्निर्मे गोप्ता मरुतश्च सर्वे विश्वे देवा अभि रक्षन्तु पक्वम्
Among the descendants of seers I place you, O porridge; there are also other descendants of seers here. Agni is my protector, and all the Maruts, all the gods, may they guard the cooked food.
यज्ञं दुहानं सदमित्प्रपीनं पुमांसं धेनुं सदनं रयीणाम् । प्रजामृतत्वमुत दीर्घमायू रायश्च पोषैरुप त्वा सदेम
The sacrifice, ever-yielding, ever-fattened, the bull, the cow, the seat of riches. May offspring, immortality, and long life, and wealth with abundance, come to you together.
वृषभोऽसि स्वर्ग ऋषीन् आर्षेयान् गच्छ । सुकृतां लोके सीद तत्र नौ संस्कृतम्
You are the bull, heavenly; go to the seers, descendants of seers. In the world of the righteous, settle there our prepared offering.
समाचिनुष्वानुसंप्रयाह्यग्ने पथः कल्पय देवयानान् । एतैः सुकृतैरनु गच्छेम यज्ञं नाके तिष्ठन्तमधि सप्तरश्मौ
Gather together, proceed in order; O Agni, prepare the path of the gods. With these good deeds may we follow the sacrifice, to the heaven where the seven-rayed one abides.
येन देवा ज्योतिषा द्यामुदायन् ब्रह्मौदनं पक्त्वा सुकृतस्य लोकम् । तेन गेष्म सुकृतस्य लोकं स्वरारोहन्तो अभि नाकमुत्तमम्
By which the gods ascended to heaven with light, having cooked the sacrificial porridge, to the world of the righteous—by that may we ascend to the world of the righteous, reaching the highest heaven.
भवाशर्वौ मृडतं माभि यातं भूतपती पशुपती नमो वाम् । प्रतिहितामायतां मा वि स्राष्टं मा नो हिंसिष्टं द्विपदो मा चतुष्पदः
O Bhava and Sarva, be gracious, do not approach with harm; Lords of beings, Lords of cattle, homage to you. Do not let the missile, once aimed, be released; do not injure us, neither two-footed nor four-footed.
शुने क्रोष्ट्रे मा शरीराणि कर्तमलिक्लवेभ्यो गृध्रेभ्यो ये च कृष्णा अविष्यवः । मक्षिकास्ते पशुपते वयांसि ते विघसे मा विदन्त
Do not harm the bodies of the dog or the jackal, nor those of the outcastes, the vultures, nor the black, flesh-eating birds. O Lord of cattle, the flies are your birds; let the devourers not find us.
क्रन्दाय ते प्राणाय याश्च ते भव रोपयः । नमस्ते रुद्र कृण्मः सहस्राक्षायामर्त्य
To your cry, to your breath, and to your planted roots, we bow. Salutations to you, Rudra, thousand-eyed, immortal.
पुरस्तात्ते नमः कृण्म उत्तरादधरादुत । अभीवर्गाद्दिवस्पर्यन्तरिक्षाय ते नमः
We make our reverence to you in the east, in the north, below, and above; from every direction, to the sky and to the midspace, we bow to you.
