यज्ञपदीराक्षीरा स्वधाप्राणा महीलुका । वशा पर्जन्यपत्नी देवाँ अप्येति ब्रह्मणा
She is the path of sacrifice, with eyes of milk, with Svadhā as breath, dwelling in greatness; the cow, wife of Parjanya, comes to the gods with Brahman.
अनु त्वाग्निः प्राविशदनु सोमो वशे त्वा । ऊधस्ते भद्रे पर्जन्यो विद्युतस्ते स्तना वशे
Agni has entered you, Soma is within you, O cow; Parjanya has given you a good udder, and lightning is your breast, O cow.
अपस्त्वं धुक्षे प्रथमा उर्वरा अपरा वशे । तृतीयं राष्ट्रं धुक्षेऽन्नं क्षीरं वशे त्वम्
You first milked the waters, then the fertile land, O cow; you milked the third, the people—food and milk are within you.
यदादित्यैर्हूयमानोपातिष्ठ ऋतवरि । इन्द्रः सहस्रं पात्रान्त्सोमं त्वापाययद्वशे
When, invoked by the Ādityas, you stood by the seasons, Indra made you drink a thousand vessels of Soma, O cow.
यदनूचीन्द्रमैरात्त्वा ऋषभोऽह्वयत्। तस्मात्ते वृत्रहा पयः क्षीरं क्रुद्धोऽहरद्वशे
When the bull, called by the Anūci and the Indramā, summoned you, then the slayer of Vṛtra, angered, took your milk, O cow.
{३३} यत्ते क्रुद्धो धनपतिरा क्षीरमहरद्वशे । इदं तदद्य नाकस्त्रिषु पात्रेषु रक्षति
When the lord of wealth, angered, took your milk, O cow, this today is guarded in three vessels in the sky.
त्रिषु पात्रेषु तं सोममा देव्यहरद्वशा । अथर्वा यत्र दीक्षितो बर्हिष्यास्त हिरण्यये
In three vessels the goddess cow took that Soma; where Atharvan, consecrated, sat on the golden grass.
सं हि सोमेनागत समु सर्वेण पद्वता । वशा समुद्रमध्यष्ठद्गन्धर्वैः कलिभिः सह
Indeed, she came together with Soma, with all the paths; the cow stood in the midst of the ocean with the Gandharvas and the Kalis.
सं हि वातेनागत समु सर्वैः पतत्रिभिः । वशा समुद्रे प्रानृत्यदृचः सामानि बिभ्रती
Indeed, she came together with the wind, with all the birds; the cow danced in the ocean, bearing the Ṛc and Sāman hymns.
सं हि सूर्येणागत समु सर्वेण चक्षुषा । वशा समुद्रमत्यख्यद्भद्रा ज्योतींषि बिभ्रती
Indeed, she came together with the sun, with all sight; the cow crossed over the ocean, bearing auspicious lights.
अभीवृता हिरण्येन यदतिष्ठ ऋतावरि । अश्वः समुद्रो भूत्वाध्यस्कन्दद्वशे त्वा
Covered with gold, when she stood by the order, the horse became the ocean and mounted upon you, O cow.
तद्भद्राः समगच्छन्त वशा देष्ट्र्यथो स्वधा । अथर्वा यत्र दीक्षितो बर्हिष्यास्त हिरण्यये
Then the blessed ones came together—the cow, the bestower, and Svadhā; where Atharvan, consecrated, sat on the golden grass.
वशा माता राजन्यस्य वशा माता स्वधे तव । वशाया यज्ञ आयुधं ततश्चित्तमजायत
The cow is the mother of the king, the cow is your mother, O Svadhā; from the cow arose the sacrificial implement, and from that the mind was born.
ऊर्ध्वो बिन्दुरुदचरद्ब्रह्मणः ककुदादधि । ततस्त्वं जज्ञिषे वशे ततो होताजायत
The upward-pointing drop arose, set on the summit of Brahman; from there you were born, O cow, from there the Hotṛ was born.
आस्नस्ते गाथा अभवन्न् उष्णिहाभ्यो बलं वशे । पाजस्याज्जज्ञे यज्ञ स्तनेभ्यो रश्मयस्तव
Songs arose for you, from the Ushnih verses came strength under your control; from the breast of Pajasa was born the sacrifice, and from your breasts, rays.
{३४} ईर्माभ्यामयनं जातं सक्थिभ्यां च वशे तव । आन्त्रेभ्यो जज्ञिरे अत्रा उदरादधि वीरुधः
From your thighs was born movement, and from your hips, your power; from your entrails arose the atri, and from your belly, the plants.
यदुदरं वरुणस्यानुप्राविशथा वशे । ततस्त्वा ब्रह्मोदह्वयत्स हि नेत्रमवेत्तव
When you entered the belly of Varuna, under your power, then Brahma called to you, for he knew your eye.
सर्वे गर्भादवेपन्त जायमानादसूस्वः । ससूव हि तामाहु वशेति ब्रह्मभिः कॢप्तः स ह्यस्या बन्धुः
All trembled in the womb, from the one being born, from the one giving birth; she gave birth, they called her Vasha, prepared by the Brahmans, for he is her kin.
युध एकः सं सृजति यो अस्या एक इद्वशी । तरांसि यज्ञा अभवन् तरसां चक्षुरभवद्वशा
One alone creates in battle, he alone is master here; the sacrifices became his stars, and the vision of the strong became Vasha.
वशा यज्ञं प्रत्यगृह्णाद्वशा सूर्यमधारयत्। वशायामन्तरविशदोदनो ब्रह्मणा सह
Vasha received the sacrifice, Vasha sustained the sun; within Vasha, the offering was clarified together with Brahman.
वशामेवामृतमाहुर्वशां मृत्युमुपासते । वशेदं सर्वमभवद्देवा मनुष्या असुराः पितर ऋषयः
They call Vasha immortality, they worship Vasha as death; all this became Vasha—gods, humans, asuras, ancestors, and sages.
य एवं विद्यात्स वशां प्रति गृह्णीयात्। तथा हि यज्ञः सर्वपाद्दुहे दात्रेऽनपस्फुरन्
Whoever knows thus should receive Vasha; so indeed the sacrifice yields all its fruits to the giver, unfailing.
तिस्रो जिह्वा वरुणस्यान्तर्दीद्यत्यासनि । तासां या मध्ये राजति सा वशा दुष्प्रतिग्रहा
Three tongues of Varuna shine within, blazing; among them, the one that rules in the middle is Vasha, difficult to receive.
चतुर्धा रेतो अभवद्वशायाः । आपस्तुरीयममृतं तुरीयं यज्ञस्तुरीयं पशवस्तुरीयम्
The seed of Vasha became fourfold: the waters, the fourth is immortality; the fourth is sacrifice; the fourth is cattle.
वशा द्यौर्वशा पृथिवी वशा विष्णुः प्रजापतिः । वशाया दुग्धमपिबन्त्साध्या वसवश्च ये
Vasha is heaven, Vasha is earth, Vasha is Vishnu, Prajapati; the Sadhyas and Vasus drank the milk of Vasha.
वशाया दुग्धं पीत्वा साध्या वसवश्च ये । ते वै ब्रध्नस्य विष्टपि पयो अस्या उपासते
Having drunk the milk of Vasha, the Sadhyas and Vasus worship the milk of Bradhna's dwelling.
सोममेनामेके दुह्रे घृतमेक उपासते । य एवं विदुषे वशां ददुस्ते गतास्त्रिदिवं दिवः
Some milk Soma from her, some worship ghee; those who give Vasha to the knower ascend to the third heaven.
ब्राह्मणेभ्यो वशां दत्त्वा सर्वांल्लोकान्त्समश्नुते । ऋतं ह्यस्यामार्पितमपि ब्रह्माथो तपः
Having given Vasha to the Brahmans, one attains all worlds; for truth is established in her, and also Brahman and austerity.
वशां देवा उप जीवन्ति वशां मनुष्या उत । वशेदं सर्वमभवद्यावत्सूर्यो विपश्यति
The gods live by Vasha, and so do humans; all this became Vasha, as long as the sun perceives.
अग्ने जायस्वादितिर्नाथितेयं ब्रह्मौदनं पचति पुत्रकामा । सप्तऋषयो भूतकृतस्ते त्वा मन्थन्तु प्रजया सहेह
O Agni, be born; Aditi is your protector. She cooks this Brahma-porridge for those desiring children. The seven sages, creators of beings, churn you here together with offspring.
