येभिर्वात इषितः प्रवाति ये ददन्ते पञ्च दिशः सध्रीचीः । य आहुतिमत्यमन्यन्त देवा अपां नेतारः कतमे त आसन्
By whom the wind is driven to blow, who give the five directions together; who, thinking themselves possessed of offerings, are the gods, leaders of the waters—who were they?
इमामेषां पृथिवीं वस्त एकोऽन्तरिक्षं पर्येको बभूव । दिवमेषां ददते यो विधर्ता विश्वा आशाः प्रति रक्षन्त्येके
Of these, one dwells on the earth, one moves about in the atmosphere; one gives them the sky, who is the arranger; others guard all the regions.
यो विद्यात्सूत्रं विततं यस्मिन्न् ओताः प्रजा इमाः । सूत्रं सूत्रस्य यो विद्याद्स विद्याद्ब्राह्मणं महत्
He who knows the thread stretched out, in which these creatures are woven; he who knows the thread of the thread, he knows the great Brāhmaṇa.
वेदाहं सूत्रं विततं यस्मिन्न् ओताः प्रजा इमाः । सूत्रं सूत्रस्याहं वेदाथो यद्ब्राह्मणं महद्
I know the thread stretched out, in which these creatures are woven; I know the thread of the thread, and thus the great Brāhmaṇa.
यदन्तरा द्यावापृथिवी अग्निरैत्प्रदहन् विश्वदाव्यः । यत्रातिष्ठन्न् एकपत्नीः परस्तात्क्वेवासीन् मातरिश्वा तदानीम्
Between heaven and earth, Agni burns, consuming all that can be burned; where he stood with a single wife, beyond that—where was Mātariśvan then?
अप्स्वासीन् मातरिश्वा प्रविष्टः प्रविष्टा देवाः सलिलान्यासन्॥ बृहन् ह तस्थौ रजसो विमानः पवमानो हरित आ विवेश
Mātariśvan entered into the waters; the gods entered into the waters. The great one stood as the measure of the dust, the purifier entered the green.
उत्तरेणेव गयत्रीममृतेऽधि वि चक्रमे । साम्ना ये साम संविदुरजस्तद्ददृशे क्व
He strode above the immortal Gāyatrī in the north; those who know the Sāman by the Sāman saw that region—where?
निवेशनः संगमनो वसूनां देव इव सविता सत्यधर्मा । इन्द्रो न तस्थौ समरे धनानाम्
The dwelling, the meeting place of treasures, like the god Savitṛ, true in law; Indra did not stand in the contest for riches.
पुण्डरीकं नवद्वारं त्रिभिर्गुणेभिरावृतम् । तस्मिन् यद्यक्षमात्मन्वत्तद्वै ब्रह्मविदो विदुः
The lotus of nine gates, enveloped by the three qualities—within it, if there is a lordly self, that indeed is known by those who know Brahman.
अकामो धीरो अमृतः स्वयंभू रसेन तृप्तो न कुतश्चनोनः । तमेव विद्वान् न बिभाय मृत्योरात्मानं धीरमजरं युवानम्
Desireless, steadfast, immortal, self-born, satisfied with essence, lacking nothing from anywhere—knowing him alone, one does not fear death: the self, firm, ageless, ever young.
अघायतामपि नह्या मुखानि सपत्नेषु वज्रमर्पयैतम् । इन्द्रेण दत्ता प्रथमा शतौदना भ्रातृव्यघ्नी यजमानस्य गातुः
Let our mouths not speak evil; let the thunderbolt be directed at our rivals. The first, hundred-feeding, given by Indra, slayer of enemies, is the path of the sacrificer.
वेदिष्टे चर्म भवतु बर्हिर्लोमानि यानि ते । एषा त्वा रशनाग्रभीद्ग्रावा त्वैषोऽधि नृत्यतु
Let your hide become the altar, your hairs the sacred grass. This binding strap I take for you; let this stone dance upon you.
बालास्ते प्रोक्षणीः सन्तु जिह्वा सं मार्ष्टु अघ्न्ये । शुद्धा त्वं यज्ञिया भूत्वा दिवं प्रेहि शतौदने
Let your young ones be the sprinklers; let the tongue cleanse, O uninjurable one. Being pure and fit for sacrifice, ascend to heaven, O hundred-feeding one.
यः शतौदनां पचति कामप्रेण स कल्पते । प्रीता ह्यस्य ऋत्विजः सर्वे यन्ति यथायथम्
He who cooks the hundred-feeding one with desire is fit; for him, all the priests are pleased and proceed as is proper.
स स्वर्गमा रोहति यत्रादस्त्रिदिवं दिवः । अपूपनाभिं कृत्वा यो ददाति शतौदनाम्
He ascends to heaven, to the undisturbed world of the gods, who, having made the offering, gives the hundred-feeding one.
स तांल्लोकान्त्समाप्नोति ये दिव्या ये च पार्थिवाः । हिरण्यज्योतिषं कृत्वा यो ददाति शतौदनाम्
He attains all those worlds, both celestial and terrestrial, who, having made the offering with golden light, gives the hundred-feeding one.
ये ते देवि शमितारः पक्तारो ये च ते जनाः । ते त्वा सर्वे गोप्स्यन्ति मैभ्यो भैषीः शतौदने
Those, O goddess, who are your butchers, your cooks, and your people—all of them will protect you; do not fear us, O hundred-feeding one.
वसवस्त्वा दक्षिणत उत्तरान् मरुतस्त्वा । आदित्याः पश्चाद्गोप्स्यन्ति साग्निष्टोममति द्रव
May the Vasus guard you to the south, the Maruts to the north; may the Ādityas guard you from behind. Run forth with the Agniṣṭoma.
देवाः पितरो मनुष्या गन्धर्वाप्सरसश्च ये । ते त्वा सर्वे गोप्स्यन्ति सातिरात्रमति द्रव
The gods, ancestors, humans, Gandharvas, and Apsarases—all of them will protect you. Run forth with the Sātirātra.
अन्तरिक्षं दिवं भूमिमादित्यान् मरुतो दिशः । लोकान्त्स सर्वान् आप्नोति यो ददाति शतौदनाम्
He attains all the worlds—atmosphere, heaven, earth, the Ādityas, the Maruts, the directions—who gives the hundred-feeding one.
{३०} घृतं प्रोक्षन्ती सुभगा देवी देवान् गमिष्यति । पक्तारमघ्न्ये मा हिंसीर्दिवं प्रेहि शतौदने
Sprinkling with ghee, the gracious goddess will go to the gods. O uninjurable one, do not harm the cook; ascend to heaven, O hundred-feeding one.
ये देवा दिविषदो अन्तरिक्षसदश्च ये ये चेमे भूम्यामधि । तेभ्यस्त्वं धुक्ष्व सर्वदा क्षीरं सर्पिरथो मधु
Whatever gods dwell in heaven, in the atmosphere, and here upon earth—to them, you shall yield always milk, clarified butter, and honey.
यत्ते शिरो यत्ते मुखं यौ कर्णौ ये च ते हनू । आमिक्षां दुह्रतां दात्रे क्षीरं सर्पिरथो मधु
Whatever is your head, your mouth, your two ears, and your jaws—may they yield to the recipient milk, clarified butter, and honey.
यौ त ओष्ठौ ये नासिके ये शृङ्गे ये च तेऽक्षिणी । आमिक्षां दुह्रतां दात्रे क्षीरं सर्पिरथो मधु
Your two lips, your nostrils, your horns, and your two eyes—may they yield to the recipient milk, clarified butter, and honey.
यत्ते क्लोमा यद्धृदयं पुरीतत्सहकण्ठिका । आमिक्षां दुह्रतां दात्रे क्षीरं सर्पिरथो मधु
Whatever is your spleen, your heart, your lungs, and your throat—may they yield to the recipient milk, clarified butter, and honey.
नमस्ते जायमानायै जाताया उत ते नमः । बालेभ्यः शफेभ्यो रूपायाघ्न्ये ते नमः
Homage to you, O one being born; homage to you, O one who is born. Homage to your calves, your hooves, and your form, O uninjurable one.
यो विद्यात्सप्त प्रवतः सप्त विद्यात्परावतः । शिरो यज्ञस्य यो विद्यात्स वशां प्रति गृह्णीयात्
Whoever knows the seven inlets, whoever knows the seven outlets, whoever knows the head of the sacrifice—he alone may take hold of the cow.
वेदाहं सप्त प्रवतः सप्त वेद परावतः । शिरो यज्ञस्याहं वेद सोमं चास्यां विचक्षणम्
I know the seven inlets, I know the seven outlets; I know the head of the sacrifice, and I see the Soma placed within her.
यया द्यौर्यया पृथिवी ययापो गुपिता इमाः । वशां सहस्रधारां ब्रह्मणाच्छावदामसि
By whom the heaven, by whom the earth, by whom these waters are protected—by that thousand-streamed cow we invoke the blessing of Brahman.
शतं कंसाः शतं दोग्धारः शतं गोप्तारो अधि पृष्ठे अस्याः । ये देवास्तस्यां प्राणन्ति ते वशां विदुरेकधा
A hundred vessels, a hundred milkers, a hundred guardians are upon her back; the gods who breathe within her know the cow as one.
